The MOisture PreSeparators (MOPS) and the Special CRossUnder Pipe Separators (SCRUPS) are components of the ABB fourth generation Moisture Separator Reheaters (MSR). They are easily retrofitable components suitable for installation in existing nuclear power plants. Since MOPS and SCRUPS are installed directly at the HP turbine exhaust, the majority of the moisture can be removed there and with this in the following crossunder piping and on carbon steel MSR components the erosion corrosion wear can be stopped or at least reduced to a great extent with subsequent reduction in maintenance work. Further this will reduce loading on the condensate polishing systems and contamination in BWR units. In addition the overall moisture separator efficiency will be improved and the pressure drop between the HP and LP turbines reduced thus contributing to an improvement in the cycle efficiency. With the improved separation and lower moisture content the life of the MSR bundles and of the separator elements will also be extended, thus contributing to the plant availability. This paper gives a short overview of the function of the MOPS and SCRUPS type separators and reports on the experience gained with retrofitted separators. Finally the influence of the separators on plant availability, cycle efficiency and maintenance will be evaluated.
