Influence of Plasma Treatment Parameters on the Structural-Phase Composition, Hardness, Moisture-Resistance, and Raman-Enhancement Properties of Nitrogen-Containing Titanium Dioxide.

The paper shows, for the first time, the prospects of treatment with a quasi-equilibrium low-temperature nitrogen plasma in an open atmosphere for the formation of super-hard, super-hydrophobic TiN/TiO2 composite coatings with pronounced Raman-enhancement properties. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman spectroscopy, as well as the analysis of hardness and moisture-resistance properties, are used as analytical research methods. During plasma treatment of titanium films on sapphire with a mass average temperature of 4-6 kK, an X-ray amorphous hydrophilic titanium oxide film with a low nitrogen content is formed. The nitrogen content in titanium oxide films increases with increasing treatment temperature up to 6-7 kK. In this case, an X-ray amorphous hydrophobic film is formed. With a further increase in temperature to 7-10 kK, a TiN/TiO2 composite structure based on polycrystalline rutile is formed with increased hydrophobicity and pronounced Raman enhancement properties due to the effective excitation of surface plasmon polaritons. The presence of the crystalline phase increases the dephasing time, which determines the quality of the resonance and the achievable amplification of the electromagnetic field near the TiN inclusions. All treated films on sapphire have a super-hardness above 25 GPa (Vickers hardness test) due to high grain size, the presence of nitrogen-containing inclusions concentrated along grain boundaries, and compressive stresses.

CO2 capture from wet flue gas using transition metal inserted porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks as efficient adsorbents

CO2 capture from large point sources is indispensable for achieving 1.5 degree target as long as fossil fuels are still in use. Selective adsorption of CO2 from flue gas constitutes a promising CO2 capture technology, thanks to the development of numerous fascinating solid adsorbents in the past three decades. However, very few adsorbents can retain their required performance in the presence of moisture which is unfortunately always the case in reality. In this study, we elevated the CO2 adsorption and separation performance of a water-stable aluminum-based porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (Al-PMOF) by inserting transition metals as adsorption sites. Compared with the pristine Al-PMOF and other four transition metals (TMs) incorporated PMOFs (Al-PMOF(M)), the Co-inserted Al-PMOF (Al-PMOF(Co)) exhibited the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (3.32 mmol/g) and highest CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity (87 and 20, respectively) at 273 K and 1.0 bar. After three consecutive cyclic moisture treatments, the CO2 adsorption capacity of Al-PMOF(Co) remained almost unchanged. More importantly, the dynamic binary CO2/N2 breakthrough adsorption of Al-PMOF(Co) exhibited negligible differences in CO2 adsorption capacities between dry and wet flue gas conditions, suggesting that TMs incorporated Al-PMOF possess excellent moisture-resistant properties. Mechanistic studies using the combined in situ synchrotron infrared spectroscopic and powder X-ray diffraction together with density functional theory calculations unambiguously revealed the inserted metals are the dominant CO2 adsorption sites. This study materializes the rational design of efficient adsorbents for CO2 capture and contributes to mitigating climate change.

N-doped carbon dots incorporated chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone based polymer film for advanced packaging applications

We have explored the use of N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) as a strengthening agent for the preparation of advanced packaging materials. The incorporation of NCDs in chitosan-polyvinylpyrrolidone (chitosan-PVP) film was achieved by a simple solution casting method to improve the mechanical properties and biodegradability of the film. Orange peel extract has flavouring and antimicrobial properties, incorporated into the film. The synthesized films showed enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break and moisture resistance properties. Moreover, it showed excellent biodegradation ability and promotes plant growth. Therefore, NCDs incorporated film with orange peel extract can be recommended for food packaging applications.

Novel DABCO based acidic ionic liquid as a green protocol for the synthesis of thiazolidin-4-one derivatives and cytotoxic activity evaluation on human breast cancer cell line

A novel [C4H10-DABCO][ClO4]2 DABCO based protic acid supported ionic liquid has been synthesized, characterized, and evaluated as an efficient, economic, and reusable catalyst for the one pot, three component synthesis of 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one in an aqueous medium with high to excellent yield. This study compares DABCO based ionic liquids [H2-DABCO][HSO4]2, [H2-DABCO][H2PO4]2, [H2-DABCO][ClO4]2, and [C4H10-DABCO][ClO4]2 to highlight the impact of cations and anions on the catalytic applicability and moisture-resistance properties. The DABCO based Bifunctional Acidic Ionic Liquid (DBAIL) catalyst was effectively recycled five times without losing significant catalytic activity. Five of the synthesized derivatives were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against the MCF-7 cell line using MTT assay, and the compounds showed moderate to good activity.

Moisture resistance of stone matrix asphalt at lab simulated high temperature and continuous rainfall condition

ABSTRACT The study of asphalt mixture in unfavourable climate conditions has been receiving an increasing attention in pavement engineering. This study aimed to investigate the moisture resistance property of stone matrix asphalt (SMA) in continuous rainfall and high-temperature conditions. Meanwhile, this study employed five indicators to evaluate the moisture resistance property of SMA and analysed the correlation between them. Specifically, rutting depth, creep slope (CS), slipping number (LCSN), tensile strength ratio (TSR) and adhesion failure were used for quantitative evaluation. Climate data of the most unfavourable condition in Shanghai in the past 20 years were collected and input in an accelerated weathering test device for indoor simulation. Hamburg wheel tracking test, indirect tensile test and water boiling test were employed to characterise the moisture resistance property of SMA. As a result, it revealed that moisture resistance of SMA could drop to a minimum value after being exposed to the environment for more than 5 days, and the moisture resistance of SMA could rebound at around 10 days of treatment. Through correlation analysis, it was found that for SMA, TSR presented a good linear correlation with the reciprocal of CS (1/CS) and LCSN showed a good correlation with 1/CS and rutting depth.

Moisture-resistant, stretchable NOx gas sensors based on laser-induced graphene for environmental monitoring and breath analysis

The accurate, continuous analysis of healthcare-relevant gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a humid environment remains elusive for low-cost, stretchable gas sensing devices. This study presents the design and demonstration of a moisture-resistant, stretchable NOx gas sensor based on laser-induced graphene (LIG). Sandwiched between a soft elastomeric substrate and a moisture-resistant semipermeable encapsulant, the LIG sensing and electrode layer is first optimized by tuning laser processing parameters such as power, image density, and defocus distance. The gas sensor, using a needlelike LIG prepared with optimal laser processing parameters, exhibits a large response of 4.18‰ ppm−1 to NO and 6.66‰ ppm−1 to NO2, an ultralow detection limit of 8.3 ppb to NO and 4.0 ppb to NO2, fast response/recovery, and excellent selectivity. The design of a stretchable serpentine structure in the LIG electrode and strain isolation from the stiff island allows the gas sensor to be stretched by 30%. Combined with a moisture-resistant property against a relative humidity of 90%, the reported gas sensor has further been demonstrated to monitor the personal local environment during different times of the day and analyze human breath samples to classify patients with respiratory diseases from healthy volunteers. Moisture-resistant, stretchable NOx gas sensors can expand the capability of wearable devices to detect biomarkers from humans and exposed environments for early disease diagnostics.

Inkjet Printing of Quasi‐2D Perovskite Layers with Optimized Drying Protocol for Efficient Solar Cells

AbstractMetal halide perovskites of reduced dimensionality constitute an interesting subcategory of the perovskite semiconductor family, which attract a lot of attention, primarily due to their excellent moisture resistance and peculiar optoelectronic properties. Specifically, quasi‐2D materials of the Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) type, are intensely investigated as photoactive layers in perovskite solar cells. Here, a scalable deposition of quasi‐2D perovskite thin films, with a nominal composition of 4F‐PEA2MA4Pb5I16 (4‐FPEA+‐4‐fluoro‐phenethylammonium, applied as a spacer cation), using an inkjet printing technique, is developed. An optimized precursor formulation, and appropriate post‐printing treatment, which enable good control over nucleation and crystal growth steps, result in highly crystalline and uniform perovskite layers. Particularly, vacuum with nitrogen flushing provides an optimal drying treatment, which produces a more uniform distribution of low dimensional phases, and a high level of vertical (out‐of‐plane) alignment, which is beneficial for charge carrier transport. Solar cells reaching 13% of power conversion efficiency for the rigid, and 10.6% for the flexible, large area (1 cm2) devices are presented.

Investigation on the properties of epoxy asphalt mixture containing crumb rubber for bridge expansion joint

The purpose of this research is to propose epoxy asphalt materials for bridge expansion joints. Epoxy asphalt was modified by adding 0%, 20%, 30% and, 40% crumb rubber (CR). The viscosity, tensile properties, adhesion, high-temperature stability, moisture resistance, low-temperature, and stress relaxation properties of rubber-modified epoxy asphalt (REA) were investigated comparing with the commercial BJ200-red. Thermal stress of epoxy asphalt expansion joint was also simulated by the finite element analysis platform. The results indicated that with the increase of CR content, the viscosity and deformation of REA binder increase, while operation time, the tensile strength, and adhesive decreases. CR has a slight negative effect on the high-temperature performance of epoxy asphalt mixture, and has a positive effect on low temperature deformation. When the rubber powder content is 30%, epoxy asphalt mixture has excellent mechanical properties and its high-temperature stability is higher than BJ200 mixture, but the low-temperature performance of the two is equivalent. Thermal stress analysis shows that epoxy asphalt containing 30% CR cannot fracture above −15 ℃, so it can be recommended for bridge expansion joints.

Assessments of moisture damage resistance of asphalt concrete mixtures and asphalt mastic with various mineral fillers

Resistance to moisture damage is crucial for asphalt concrete. Fine-particle mineral fillers have been used to leverage such resistance. This study examines the effects of different types of mineral fillers on the rheology and resistance to moisture damage of asphalt binders and asphalt concrete mixtures. These mineral fillers, namely baghouse dust, lime kiln dust, and hydrated lime, were targeted in this study. These fillers were added to two types of asphalt binders during the initial stage to examine their effects on the rheology of the binders with dynamic shear modulus tests. The effects of the fillers on affinity were evaluated through rolling bottle tests. It was found that mineral fillers can stiffen asphalt binder/mastic, thus providing a higher dynamic shear modulus and better affinity and moisture resistance in terms of a higher percentage of asphalt binder coverage. The properties of asphalt materials were influenced more by filler type than binder type. Hydrated lime provided superior results compared to the others. Consequently, the hydrated lime was used to examine the moisture resistance in the mixture scale in the final stage. It was found that the stiffening behavior can be attributed to the moisture resistance properties in the binder/mastic scale.

Influence of Mixing Conditions of Modified Bitumen on Moisture Sensitivity of Asphalt Compounds

Modification of bitumen allows an improving the properties of bitumen, which can be a useful technique to enhance asphalt’s characteristics. Therefore, this research intended to study the effect of mixing time of different percentages of epoxy resin, between 0 to 8%, doped into bitumens on the moisture sensitivity of asphalt compounds containing two types of aggregates, i.e. limestone and siliceous. For this aim, the Sessile Drop Method (SDM) was employed, and moisture resistant parameters associated to surface free energy concept such as surface free energy components, work of cohesion, work of adhesion, work of debonding, adhesion bitumen to aggregate, and wetting bitumen around aggregate surface were assessed. The results revealed that the effect of the mixing time of bitumen and epoxy resin on moisture resistance properties of asphalt compounds significantly depends on the percentage of epoxy resin used in bitumen mixture. For bitumens with 4 and 6% epoxy resin, adhesion and wetting parameters had a similar performance for both mixing times of 10 and 60 minutes. However, asphalt compounds containing 2 and 8% epoxy resin modified bitumens prepared for 10 min mixing time had a better adhesion and wetting performance than those prepared for the longer mixing time, 60 minutes. The effect of mixing time of bitumen modified with epoxy resin on the bitumen and asphalt compound’ performance depend on the percent of additive in the bitumen.

Preparation of tuna skin collagen-chitosan composite film improved by sweep frequency pulsed ultrasound technology

To produce a natural food packaging film from tuna skin collagen (TSC) and chitosan (CTS) and improve its mechanical and physicochemical properties, the sweep frequency pulsed ultrasound (SFPU) was introduced as a new technology and compared with the conventional method. The optimum preparation conditions of the SFPU-TSC-CTS film were sweep frequency of 28 ± 0.5 kHz, power density of 100 W/L, sweep frequency cycle of 100 ms, pulse duty ratio of 77%, and ultrasonic time of 10 min. Significant increases in the tensile strength (27.14%) and elongation at break (16.54%) and a significant decrease in the water vapor permeability (12.15%) were observed by sonication. Thus, a moderate SFPU treatment can significantly improve the moisture resistance and mechanical properties of the film. These enhancements were achieved by a more ordered and compact structure, a good crystallinity and a higher thermostability of SFPU-TSC-CTS film, which were verified by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), circular dichroism (CD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal stability indexes. Moreover, SFPU-TSC-CTS film also presented good antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Therefore, SFPU was an effective auxiliary technology for improving the quality of food packaging film and can be deeply explored.

Water Absorption Properties in Transverse Direction of Heat-Treated Chinese Fir Wood Determined Using TD-NMR

Heat treatment is an environmentally friendly method that improves the moisture-resistant properties and increases the service life of timber. In this work, Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata [Lamb.] Hook.) wood was heat-treated in a chamber with steam at temperatures of 160, 180, 200 and 220 °C for 2 h, and the absorption of water was studied by gravimetric analysis and time domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR). The results show that both the amount of bound water and free water decreased with the increasing treatment temperature. The water absorption of wood in the radial direction was faster than that in the tangential direction due to the existence of rays, and this difference remained after the heat treatment. The heat treatment at 220 °C had a significant effect on water absorption in the tangential direction of wood, and the moisture content (MC) was approximately 20% lower than that of samples absorbing water in the radial direction. T2 (spin–spin relaxation time) distributions showed two main components which were associated with bound water and free water, and for samples absorbing water in the radial or tangential direction, there was only a difference in the amount of free water. The amount of free water significantly decreased for the samples that were heat-treated at 220 °C and absorbed water in the tangential direction, indicating that the high-temperature heat-treated samples tended to close the pits in wood cells.

Effect of polyethylene glycol/polyacrylamide graft copolymerizaton phase change materials on the performance of asphalt mixture for road engineering

It is significant to make full use of solar energy to reduce the deterioration of asphalt pavements and the negative impact on the environment due to temperature changes. Using phase change materials (PCMs) in asphalt mixture could increase temperature regulation and reduce thermal degradation due to temperature cycling. In order to study the effect of a new solid–solid PCM called PPGC-PCM on the performance of asphalt mixture, a series of tests were carried out. The control group and six different contents of PPGC-PCM were added into AC-13 asphalt mixtures. The effects of PPGC-PCM on the mechanical, moisture resistance, high-temperature, and low-temperature cracking resistance properties of asphalt mixture was analyzed. The influence of PPGC-PCM on the thermal properties in asphalt mixture was analyzed by thermal conductivity test. Results showed that the addition of PPGC-PCM could improve the moisture resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures, as well as greatly reduce the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture. The optimal application could be achieved by using the PPGC-PCM with 7.5% addition ratio. In addition, the cooling test proved that the addition of PPGC-PCM could significantly improve the heat preservation capacity of the asphalt mixture. The temperature difference between PPGC-PCM and control testing groups was up to 3.8°C, and the mixture was cooled from 21°C to 0°C with a delay of 18–21 min.

Surface‐Modified CaO Catalyst for the Production of Glycerol Carbonate

AbstractFor enhancing the moisture resistance properties of the commercial CaO, the surface of the CaO has been modified using various aliphatic and aromatic groups as modifiers. The binding of the modifiers onto the surface of the CaO is confirmed through the FTIR and XPS techniques. For the first time, these modified CaO catalysts have been employed to carry out the transesterification reaction of glycerol and dimethyl carbonate forming glycerol carbonate. Under the optimized reaction conditions, benzyl modified CaO catalyst showed better catalytic activity yielding 82 % glycerol carbonate with 100 % selectivity. The 0.5‐Ben/CaO catalyst is found to resist the presence of 5 wt% H2O content in the reaction due to the formation of hydrophobic layer by the benzyl functionalization over the CaO surface. The humidity test also reveals that the modified CaO showed better resistance to moisture adsorption than its native counterpart.

Effects of stacking sequence of pineapple leaf-flax reinforced hybrid composite laminates on mechanical characterization and moisture resistant properties

The present study aims to investigate the effects of stacking sequence on physical, mechanical and moisture resistant properties of pineapple leaf fiber (PF) and flax fiber (FF) reinforced composite laminates. The non-hybrid and hybrid composite laminates are fabricated by using vacuum assisted resin infusion molding process (VARIM) with an inter-ply configuration. From the results, the maximum tensile strength (219.3 MPa), flexural strength (132.4 MPa), shear strength (39.1 MPa) and impact energy (50.2 J) have been recorded for FFRP composites while the minimum for PFRP (124.7 MPa, 52.3 MPa, 4.3 MPa, and 23.3 J) respectively. For hybrid composite laminates, the increase in volume fraction of flax fiber, improved the mechanical and moisture resistant properties while an increase in the volume fraction of PALF enhanced the elongation and flexibility of the developed composites. Furthermore, it observed that, stacking sequence configuration of flax fibers as outer layer exhibited better tensile, flexural, impact and moisture properties while flax fibers at inner layer examined maximum shear properties. Therefore, among hybrid composites, H7 recorded maximum tensile strength, flexural strength and impact energy (207.7 MPa, 121.7 MPa and 48.8 J) while H5 recorded maximum shear strength (24.2 MPa). The water absorption and chemical resistant behaviour of fabricated laminates with five different combinations of solution (distilled water, seawater, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and sodium carbonate) are examined and revealed that hybrid composite laminates have better resistance to water and chemical uptake. The morphology and fracture analysis of composite laminates are analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Overall, the developed hybrid composite laminates have lighter weight, economical and better interfacial bonding with improved mechanical and moisture properties for distinct load-bearing applications.

Entropy-driven chemistry reveals highly stable denary MgAl2O4-type catalysts

High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are novel materials with unexpected chemistry. However, HEC-based catalysis or chemistry has rarely been studied before. Herein, porous high-entropy MgAl 2 O 4 (HE-MgAl 2 O 4 ) (up to denary metals: Mg, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) was prepared (S BET = 139 m 2 /g). The synthetic chemistry, the tolerance law of different metals, and the thermodynamic rule for crystallization have been well studied. The comparison of binary-, ternary-, quaternary-, quinary-, and denary-MgAl 2 O 4 highlighted the key role of entropy, which forces cations with intrinsic different radii to occupy similar sites of spinel. Interestingly, high entropy naturally endows the HE-MgAl 2 O 4 catalyst with exceptional stability even when operated at high-temperature moisture (350°C) for 24 h. Then, ab initio molecular dynamics studies proved that the thermal stability of HE-MgAl 2 O 4 originated from the entropy stabilization effect and kinetically stabilized structure. Moreover, CH 4 oxidation with 10 vol % steam in feeding gas was performed, and the pristine activity was preserved by the HE-MgAl 2 O 4 catalyst over continuous operation (600°C, 100 h). • The synthetic chemistry of high-entropy ceramics was studied • The entropy-driven force can incorporate up to ten different elements into MgAl 2 O 4 • Exceptional moisture-resistance of MgAl 2 O 4 was observed • AIMD study of the thermodynamically stability of high-entropy ceramics was performed By exploring synthetic chemistry for high-entropy ceramics via experiments and theory calculations, this work offers a fundamental understanding of the design of porous high-entropy materials. By incorporating ten different transition metals into a MgAl 2 O 4 spinel, we highlight the key role of entropy for lowering Gibbs free energy. Moreover, this study shows the excellent moisture-resistance properties of high-entropy MgAl 2 O 4 spinels during CH 4 oxidation, which reveals that high-entropy ceramics can be a reliable catalyst or support in the real world. In this work, we report the preparation of a porous high-entropy MgAl 2 O 4 -type spinel (up to denary metals: Mg, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) that exhibits brilliant activity and compelling stability for methane oxidation. The relationship between entropy and enthalpy is discussed, and the key role of entropy is highlighted. This work provides fundamental insights into the rational design of advanced high-entropy materials.

Effects of Chitosan and Nano Titanium Dioxide on the Mechanical, Physicochemical and Antibacterial Properties of Corn Starch Films

Biodegradable composite films have been prepared from corn starch (CS) incorporating chitosan (CH) and nanoTiO2 by a solution casting method and the mechanical, physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of the films were determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations demonstrated that the appropriate proportion of components resulted in ideally homogeneous surface of films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed that hydrogen bonds were formed between CH and CS and a covalent interaction existed between the nanoTiO2 and the CS and CH. The addition of proper amounts of CH to a CS matrix produced an enhancement of mechanical and antimicrobial properties accompanied by lower water moisture resistance. Incorporation of nanoTiO2 into the CS/CH film increased the tensile strength, moisture resistance and impermeability to oil and achieved significant antimicrobial properties. The tensile strength of the nanoTiO2/CH/CS composition film was 21.12 ± 0.34 MPa which was 6.27 times that of a plasticized CS film, while the antibacterial activity for Escherichia coli reached 94 ± 2%. The mechanical properties, moisture resistance and antimicrobial properties of the films were deteriorated by the incorporation of excessive nanoTiO2 because of self-aggregation of the nanoparticles.

Tensile Strength and Moisture Resistance Properties of Biocomposite Films Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) with Cellulose as Reinforcement from Durian Peel Fibers

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) based biocomposite film with cellulose was successfully fabricated by the solution casting method. The cellulose fibers were obtained by extraction of durian peel using alkalization and bleaching treatments. These treated cellulose fibers were used for the fabrication of PVA-based biocomposites. The durian peel cellulose fibers were varied by 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% in the PVA matrix. Tensile test and moisture resistance of biocomposites were evaluated. The 6% addition of cellulose fibers in biocomposites increases the tensile strength up to 54% (37 MPa) than pure PVA film (24 MPa). Conversely, it reduces the elongation at break of the biocomposite film. Meanwhile, the moisture resistance properties of the biocomposites increased with the addition of cellulose fibers. The tensile strength and moisture resistance of biocomposites have been increased due to the homogeneous dispersion of the cellulose fibers and PVA matrix. These biocomposites able to reduce the environmental impacts by utilizing residual lignocellulosic biomass.

A novel application of thermoplastic polyurethane/waste rubber powder blend for waterproof seal layer in high-speed railway

The moisture induced damage is considered a serious threat to the durability of the high-speed railway system. In this paper, an innovative application of thermoplastic polyurethane/waste rubber powder blend (TPU/WRP) with higher elastic modulus was introduced to enhance the water resistance of high-speed railway structure as a waterproof seal layer. The thermoplastic polyurethane has been proved to have excellent mechanical and waterproof properties, and waste rubber has the advantages in cost and sustainability. The objective of this study was to design the TPU/WRP material and evaluate its moisture resistance and mechanical properties. The compressive test was used to determine the elastic modulus and the permeability test was conducted to verify waterproof performance. Further, the finite element method (FEM) was applied to analyze its mechanical responses under both dynamic and static conditions. The results indicated that TPU/WRP containing 69.2% PU matrix, 30% WRP, and 0.8% PU defoaming agent had excellent supporting and waterproofing properties. Thus, it is recommended to consider TPU/WRP material as a functional waterproof material for preventing subbase and subgrade layers from moisture damage in heavy load traffic environment such as high-speed railway.

Development of Hybrid Cellulosic-Keratineous Fibers Base Epoxy Composites for Automobile Applications

The development of hybrid cellulosic-keratinous fibers reinforced epoxy composites was investigated in this study. Hybrid composites were fabricated by mixing coir fiber (CF) and chicken feather fiber (CFF) with the epoxy matrix in a randomly dispersed approach. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and hardness properties were determined. Also, wear property, thermal conductivity and moisture absorption potentials of the developed composites were studied while the surface morphology of the composite fracture surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that all the selected properties were improved compared to the unreinforced epoxy matrix. Sample with 1% CF and 2% CFF gave the optimum results and the combination of good mechanical, wear, thermal insulating and moisture resistance properties. It was discovered that higher volume of CFF in synergy with low volume of CF was responsible for performance. The results revealed that the materials can be used in automobile due to the inclusion of light-weight bio-fibers that gave good insulating properties in epoxy composites in conjunction with good mechanical, wear and moisture resistance.
