Extension of the shell model with configuration interactions to nuclear reactions

An extension of the shell model to nuclear reactions in which composite projectiles are involved is studied within a simple model system which contains an infinitely heavy inert core nucleus. The formal as well as practical difficulties of the continuum shell model for the nucleon-heavy nucleus scattering are removed by the modified basis functions which can readily incorporate strong long-range correlations. The deuteron-nucleus channel and its coupling to the stripping channels are discussed in detail.
