Palatectomía parcial con puntos hemostáticos previos: propuesta quirúrgica para corregir la palatitis equina.

Se realizó un informe sobre una técnica quirúrgica basada en la palatectomía parcial con puntos hemostáticos previos y se propone buscar alternativas de técnicas quirúrgicas que tengan en cuenta aspectos bioéticos de la medicina veterinaria moderna. Se demostró que al suprimir la cauterización de la zona intervenida quirúrgicamente, se disminuye el tiempo de cicatrización, así como el dolor y el estrés posquirúrgico. Con esta propuesta se contribuye con la realización de procedimientos quirúrgicos acordes con el ejercicio de la profesión actual.

Towards an understanding of equine pleuropneumonia: factors relevant for control.

To review relevant literature on factors associated with the development of equine pleuropneumonia. A review of the literature using a range of databases including Current Contents, Medline, ChemAbstracts, Biological Abstracts and CAB and a comprehensive search strategy which involved use of keywords, author and subject category searches. Additional sources included review of articles cited by key accumulated references. Since the early years of this century, many of the "gaps" in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of this disease have been filled. We now know that equine pleuropneumonia results from contamination of the lower respiratory tract with bacteria similar to the normal oropharyngeal microbiota of the horse and that transportation of any mode, especially over long distances (and consequently with no or short rest periods), is the single most important predisposing factor for this disease. This is associated with restraint of horses such that they are unable to lower their heads, which leads to increased opportunity for lower respiratory tract contamination and a reduced opportunity for clearance. Strenuous exercise also results in lower respiratory tract contamination and exercise subsequent to transportation exerts additive detrimental effects on the defenses of the lower respiratory tract. While modern veterinary medicine and surgery have significantly reduced the death rate from pleuropneumonia, horses that develop the disease have a high probability of not returning to their prior use. This underscores the importance of developing the most effective strategies for its prevention.

Beyond the Case Series: Using Regression Analysis in Modern Veterinary Medicine

Ethiopian traditional veterinary practices and their possible contribution to animal production and management.

The wide variety of traditional veterinary practices maintained within different ethnic groups provides an indication of the potential usefulness of this neglected knowledge for the Ethiopian livestock husbandry. In Ethiopia, as in other countries, traditional veterinary medicine involves the work of bone-setters, midwives, religious healers and people who claim the ability to communicate with devils. The knowledge of pastoralists in the areas of tick control, recognition of toxic plants, traditional surgery and traditional vaccination methods is described. Efforts by a Chinese veterinary team to promote traditional Ethiopian veterinary practices have been encouraging. Further evaluation of traditional veterinary practices is recommended as a condition for the integration of these practices with those of modern veterinary medicine. It is also suggested that this evaluation be coordinated and encouraged by the Veterinary Service of the Ministry of Agriculture in Ethiopia.

This book, an amplification of invited lectures given at Carleton College and the University of Minnesota in 1977, is really three-books-in-one (in five chapters). The first section describes the historic and anthropologic character of mankind's (continuing) relationship with symbiotic, and later domesticated, herd-animals; the second part traces “comparative healing” (the technical and religio-philosophical interdependance of animal and human medicine) from pre-dynastic, nilotic Egypt, Mesoptamia, Iran and India through the classic Egyptian period to the Greeks, Arabs, the Salerno School, the Renaissance and the foundation of both modern veterinary and human medicine. The final segment concerns itself with veterinary contributions (often unrecognized or neglected) to human medicine and welfare combined with the author's concept of a synergistic educational blend, a truly “Comparative Medicine,” and how it could be applied to the problem of biomedical research-training.Readers who liked “King Tut” will be enchanted by the treasure-trove of the first and second sections (three chapters), which are based both upon a review and interpretation of published works and in part on the author's travels.
