The mythical association of woman and landscape, which had earlier been of such importance for Leonardo and Giorgione, held considerable interest for Titian. This is especially evident in the works of his old age, of which the Rape of Europa (Boston, Gardner Museum) is one of the supreme examples. The theme of woman and landscape (or the earth) is, of course, a constantly recurring one in mythology, religion and the arts (as well as in modern dream symbolism). It appeared in Renaissance art even earlier than Leonardo and Giorgione, and it has remained a major theme in Western art ever since.
