The Ontology Based Model of Distance Education Ecosystem

The problems of too much emphasis on technology lack of people-centered educational philosophy, and the construction of the distance education system lack of system concept and the overall view. In this paper, the modern distance education ecosystem models based on ontology in developed. This paper analyses the learner model specification established by the Committee of Chinese education information technology standards, the ontology-based distance education ecological subject is constructed. After analyzing cognitive psychologists Anderson's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, ecological environment ontology is promoted. On this basis, the modern distance education ecosystem model is designed. We focus on the use of distance education ecological ontology in modern distance education ecosystem. This paper provides theoretical support for the building of modern distance education ecosystem, and the technical guidance for the design of distance education ecosystem.

Construction and Implementation of the Graduation Thesis Teaching System for Modern Distance Education

The graduation thesis teaching of modern distance education is an indispensable and comprehensive practice teaching link for realizing the applied talents’ training target, and the graduation thesis teaching quality directly reflects the whole teaching quality and the talents’ training level of modern distance education. It is a system engineering to guarantee the teaching quality of the graduation thesis for modern distance education, so it is necessary to construct a reasonable and feasible graduation thesis teaching system. Based on the training objective and the characteristics of modern distance education, combining with the students’ foundation and demands, the graduation thesis teaching system of modern distance education is constructed, and it is implemented by modern distance education of Dalian university of technology and gains preferable effect, which shows that this graduation thesis teaching system is reasonable and feasible.

Studies on the Course System Characteristics of British Open Universities and Inspiration to Chinese Open University Education

British open universities are generally people-oriented in the organization of professional curriculum, and achieve flexible and efficient professional setting, curriculum development, curriculum system development, etc.. British open universities’ professional curriculum setting and management model are the core elements of guarantee for their high quality teaching. Chinese open universities need to use the British open universities for reference and learn from their successful experience in professional curriculum organization, and establish a people-oriented, open education philosophy. At the same time, Chinese universities should constantly improve the professional curriculum development, focusing on using the modern educational technology, and monitor the teaching quality, and really achieve the sustainable development of modern distance education. Reform and Development of Distance Network Education Platform in P.E. Teaching

Researches aiming at distance network education platform for P.E. teaching are of great significance in promoting the gradual deepening of researches on physical education, intensifying the reformation of physical education and teaching, facilitating the revolution of physical education modes and methods, as well as boosting the revolution of physical education ideologies and theories. In accordance with practical issues faced by present development mode of web-based P.E. courses, this research is designed to analyze and set forth the plan and framework for realizing distance network education in physical education. Especially, the paper also discussed procedures and difficulties in the development of distance network education platform for physical education, and conducted a series of tentative researches over physical education and modern distance education, in aspects of interactive combination, implementation strategy, etc.

The Application Research of Web3D-Based Virtual Reality Technology in Modern Distance Education

Web3D technology is an implementation of virtual reality technology in the form. This paper researches the theory and mainstream technology of the virtual reality based on Web3D technology, and explores the application of virtual reality technology in distance education, thus to further promote the development of online teaching.

Research on English Language Teaching Practice in Open Distance Learning

A new stage of development for modern distance education has been entered in China. The main signs are: One of the main tasks is a Plan of Action for the revitalization on modern distance education project as the 21st century education; the project of open educational pilot has been implemented by all Radio & TV University systems. Under such an educational situation, modern distance education pilot project developed in the English undergraduate students, in March 2000 in Changji. With the guidance of CCTV and Changji People's Government, 42 of undergraduate English students were recruited at the same year in August, the school began in September. Under the modern distance educational conditions, Teachers of TVU how to teach? Students how to learn? A variety of media technology how to combine the application? Distance learning how to improve the system of support services? And so on, new problems need to be recognized and explored by the TVU educators of the long-distance educational practice for decades. Practice is needed for theoretical guidance, theory is also needed to enrich in the practice of refining. According to the combination of experimental work, Xinjiang Changji TVU is led by the Ministry of Education in Xinjiang Institute of Research Group, research and experiment of English teaching mode is being carried out.

The Forecast of the Requirement of Distance Education Resources Based on Neural Network

To enable the distance education resources reflect the actual needs of the uers, overcome the subjectivity,blindness, repeatability and other shortcomings in the resources development process.The article proposed BP(Error Back ropagation)neural network used in the forecast of requirements for modern distance education resources. On the base of the analysis of the advantage of BP network, constructed the network topology with one hidden layer, analysed the algorithm by discussing the relationship between nerwork layers ,gave the algorithm steps in detail. Experiments showed that: through training, adjusting the weights between neurons in the network, the network can forecast the requirements for education resources intelligent. Compared with traditional methods, this method has strong robustness and fault tolerance,so can apply more.

Thirty years of distance education: Personal reflections

This paper reflects on the evolving experience of modern distance education (DE) as a field of practice for professionals and as a medium for student access to education and training. The writer’s 30 years in the field, as both teacher and student, has coincided with the five-stage evolution of DE delivery defined by Taylor (1995-2010). The author considers the perceived identity crisis and diverse theoretical frameworks of the field since the 1980s as well as the need for new levels of change management that will enable the tools, technologies, and emerging systems of DE to create the flexibility, responsiveness, and networking that the students require and that the teachers need to learn.

Is there space in cyberspace for distance learners with special needs in Asia? A review of the level of Web accessibility of institutional and library homepages of AAOU members

The Website is the trademark of the modern distance education (DE) system as DE is vastly dependent on the World Wide Web in delivering academic programs and student support services. DE authorities and administrators should make every effort to ensure that their Web interfaces are intuitive and easy to use for supplying “any time, any place” service. Unfortunately, we distance educators in Asia are far behind our Western counterparts in this aspect. This article explores the level of accessibility of Websites of members of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) in order to provide the results to the Asian DE authorities. The author's primary objectives in writing this article are to highlight the importance of Web accessibility for distance education institutions and their libraries in catering to a wide range of user groups and to point out how easily barrier-free Websites can be created if the basic rules of Web accessibility are followed.

Research on the cost calculation of distance education based on activity-based costing

The analysis on the cost and efficiency of distance education has important meanings in both theory and practice. This paper tries to analyze the status of the school-running cost and efficiency of the pilot universities for modern distance education at present in China. On the basis of analyzing the major defects of current analysis on the cost and efficiency of distance education, activity-based costing has been used for the cost calculation and analysis of one case college. Research indicates that average school-running cost per student of the case college at three academic degrees in 2005 differs from one another, where the school-running cost per student of the undergraduate education starting from senior high school is 325.85 Yuan, of junior college education starting from senior high school, 312.96 Yuan, of undergraduate education upgrading from junior college, 308.00 Yuan. What is more, the research has established the cost function of the case college applying to the future coast budget and calculation, offering the decision-making support to the colleges in practice. The research has proved that the activity-based costing is favorable for survey of the cost information influenced by multiple factors, and can help the colleges adjust the school-running structure according to different cost efficiency and offer guidance and reference for making matching tuition price. The development of the Distance Education College of East China Normal University: a case study

PurposeThis paper aims to present a picture of the past and the present status of the Distance Education College (DEC) of East China Normal University (ECNU). It describes what the DEC has achieved in each phase, and probes into some essential problems that the DEC has attempted to solve.Design/methodology/approachThis article provides a comprehensive description of the development of the DEC by following a case study method.FindingsThe DEC goes through three stages. In the first phase, a teacher‐focused policy and disciplined management are formed. In the second phase, a quality‐first policy is emphasized, and two training modes are developed: the human‐centered management mode and the trainee‐oriented training mode. In the third phase, the DEC initiates further innovation and uses a new platform.Practical implicationsECNU has witnessed and participated in the development of modern distance education in China. It remains successful in developing distance education. The effort made by the DEC well showcases the overall development and growth of modern distance education in China.Originality/valueThis article presents the development of the DEC and will help readers understand the developmental process of distance education colleges in China.

Modern distance education project for the rural schools of China: recent development and problems

Abstract The Modern Distance Education Project for the Rural Schools (MDEPRS) of China has a wider scope and serves a larger population than any other informational project in the world. It likely will result in a far‐reaching informational revolution for basic education in China. Here, we introduce three main innovative models of material delivery, the recent developments of MDEPRS, and the problems associated with this project. We then fully discuss strategies for optimizing this project, such as establishing reasonable goals and directions, restructuring its major components, improving the delivery models and digital contents, sustaining its development, conducting better financial audit and project evaluation, and increasing community participation and financial investment.

Origin and Trend of Distance Education in Uganda

Distance education has been in existence in Uganda since the 1960s, and it has grown steadily since that time. It is however a neglected area in terms of data collection and research. The courses that were running between 1960 and 1980s have scanty documentation. What can be traced include the upgrading course for teachers which upgraded 1000 teachers from vernacular teachers to grade 1 and grade II teachers. This was repeated with 789 more teachers. There is hardly any documentation on correspondence courses Ugandans took with the various British based correspondence institutions like Rapid College Correspondence School. In the following section this study takes you through the historical development of distance education in Uganda and through the various donor funded programs of which, some have ended already, but which do offer great lessons to learn from. It also takes you through distance education at higher levels of learning, as well as distance education in non-formal education. In conclusion the study discusses some of the challenges Uganda faces in its attempt to offer modern distance education, the rather scanty achievements so far reached in that area, and proposes a way forward in form of some indicative recommendations

A DUTY FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION IN THE 1990'S

The political changes which have occurred in eastern Europe and the shift of the countries concerned from command to free market economies have created a need for new forms of continuing education for retraining in such areas as management, economics, and political science. Given current technical possibilities, such education and retraining could be offered through modern distance education techniques by means of an international aid consortium analogous in some ways to United Nations peace keeping forces, so that one western institution or nation would not predominate. As human resource development is the first step to other kinds of progress, and distance education in other areas of the world has proven its worth in the field, a well planned project for eastern Europe would attract support from western aid donors, particularly international groupings such as the European Communities. Thus would distance education contribute to the creation of the common European home.

Technology and Humanity in Distance Education

The growth of distance education has been th e most significant development in the teaching of adult learners in the last 25 years. The roots of modern distance education go back to the introduction of the penny post in the United Kingdo in the middle of the last century. In the 100–year period from 1860 to 1960 numerous citizens in many countries of the world received a n important part of their education through correspondence courses. However, over that century methods of communication evolved at an increasing pace, so that by 1960 the stage was set for a new phase in the development of distance education.
