Densitometric Determination of Papaverine in Opium, Poppy Capsules and Certain Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms

Abstract A rapid TLC-scanning method is described for the qualitative and quantitative determination of papaverine either as raw material, in certain dosage forms; poppy capsules and opium. Papaverine is separated from other constituents on precoated silica gel G plates using toluene - ethyl acetate - methanol (70:20:10). The spots were measured in situ using spectrodensitometer at 238 nm. The results obtained were precise and reproducible and the mean recovery of determination was 99.2 + 1.09. The proposed method is more convenient, rapid and is accepted in modern analytical laboratory.

Role of Modern Analytical Chemistry in Material Analyses for Trace Metals

AbstractThe trend in the modern analytical laboratory is toward lower and lower analytical concentration measurements. The analyst has a variety of analytical instruments and techniques in which to meet the ever growing need for lower concentration measurements with improved precision and accuracy. Techniques available to the analyst include flame and electrothermal atomization‐atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry, laser enhanced ionization spectrometry, neutron activation analysis, spectrophotometry, isotope dilution mass spectrometry, X‐ray fluorescence spectometry, electroanalytical, and chromatography. However, there is no analytical technique that is a panacea for all analytes in the modern analytical laboratory. Steps the analyst must consider to obtain the highest degree of precision and accuracy include the obtaining of a representative sample, the selection of the “best” analytical method, the preparation of the sample, the calibration of the instrumentation, the deciding on the level of effort for the chemical measurement and the evaluation of the data are discussed.

In most modern analytical laboratories, the number of samples being examined by physical methods has increased several hundred per cent in the last few years. This increase has frequently been disproportionate to both the number of instruments and the available operating personnel. Because of its wide usefulness, the infrared technique, in particular, has had difficulty in keeping up with the ever-increasing sample load. In fact, some groups have become more or less selective in accepting samples. This is true in our laboratory and has forced us to consider ways of minimizing both spectrophotometer time per sample and the amount of operator attention required to run the spectrophotometer. The latter saving would permit the operator to give more time to calculations, preparation of next sample, etc.
