Factors associated with the publication and impact of CUA abstracts over the last decade.

The Canadian Urological Association's (CUA) annual meeting is the largest gathering of Canadian urologists, and many abstracts that are presented go on to be published as peer-reviewed papers. Our objective is to determine the publication rates and impact of these abstracts, and examine predictors associated with their publication. We identified abstracts presented at the 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021 CUA meetings, and determined if there were matching manuscripts based on author and title using a comprehensive Medline search. Standardized data was extracted. Medians and interquartile ranges are presented, and regression models were used to determine factors associated with manuscript publication, journal impact factor, and time to publication. There were 1732 CUA abstracts in our years of interest. The overall publication rate was 45.4%. Median journal impact factor was 2.27 for all published abstracts and time to publication was 13.2 months. Type of presentation was significantly associated with publication rate (p<0.001), with 63.7% of podiums, 46.7% of moderated posters, and 39.5% of unmoderated posters published. The median journal impact factor was 3.45 for published podiums, 2.19 for moderated posters, and 2.10 for unmoderated posters. Approximately 45% of CUA annual meeting abstracts are eventually published. The type of presentation correlates well with both publication and impact factor, suggesting the CUA review process and scientific program committee does a good job of judging abstract quality.

The heart failure specialists of tomorrow: a network for young cardiovascular scientists and clinicians.

The “Heart failure specialists of Tomorrow” (HoT) group gathers young researchers, physicians, basic scientists, nurses and many other professions under the auspices of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology. After its foundation in 2014, it has quickly grown to a large group of currently 925 members. Membership in this growing community offers many advantages during, before, and after the ‘Heart Failure and World Congress on Acute Heart Failure’. These include: eligibility to receive travel grants, participation in moderated poster sessions and young researcher and clinical case sessions, the HoT walk, the career café, access to the networking opportunities, and interaction with a large and cohesive international community that constantly seeks multinational collaborations.

A Review of Clinical Poster Presentations at the Sixth Biennial Pediatric Anesthesia Neurodevelopment Assessment (PANDA) Symposium.

Clinical researchers studying the long-term neurocognitive effects of anesthetic and sedative agents on children continue to struggle with identifying a phenotype for anesthetic neurotoxicity, the window of vulnerability, and the toxicity threshold in terms of concentration and duration. The Sixth Biennial Pediatric Anesthesia Neurodevelopment Assessment (PANDA) symposium at Columbia University included a moderated poster presentation session where 4 investigators presented their latest contributions to the landscape of clinical anesthetic neurotoxicity research. A lack of standardization in the design of clinical studies in terms of age at exposure, duration and type of exposure, and outcome measures assessed were highlighted by all the investigators. Suggestions for the future direction of clinical trials included the implementation of more consistent study parameters and the employment of standardized neurocognitive testing and imaging before and after exposure to general anesthesia. Presentations covered a broad range of topics including the valid translation of preclinical studies to human subjects, the quantification of real-world exposures to anesthetic and sedative medications, and possible alternatives to these exposures.

P144: Assessment of the quality of evidence presented at the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians annual meeting over a five-year period (2013-2017)

Introduction: The CAEP annual meeting presents the latest evidence for clinical practice, but there has not yet been an appraisal of the abstracts presented at this conference. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the level of evidence of research presented at the annual meeting, and assess for trends over a five-year period (2013-2017). Methods: We conducted a scoping review that included all CAEP abstracts from 2013-2017, obtained through the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine. Two reviewers assessed eligibility and extracted data from abstracts individually, with conflicts resolved by a third reviewer. Qualitative research was excluded. Extracted data included type of presentation (ex. oral, poster), sample size, study design and type of study (therapeutic, prognostic, diagnostic, education, quality improvement, or systems-wide/economic analyses research). A level of evidence (LOE) was assigned using the 2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine criteria. Results: Abstracts from 2014-2017 have been analyzed thus far, 1090 of which were eligible and 990 included. Inter-rater agreement for screening and data extraction was high ( value 0.87 and 0.84 respectively). Systems-wide/economic analyses research was the predominant type of study (28.6%, 283/990), followed by therapeutic (19.9%, 197/990) and education (19.9%, 195/990). The mean LOE was 2.81 (95% CI 2.77,2.85). The highest proportion of studies were of level III evidence (77.7%, 769/990), followed by level II (9.6%, 95/990) and level I evidence (7.8%, 77/990). 72.1% (124/172) of all level I and II abstracts were presented in 2016 and 2017. A significant change in LOE between years was evident (p&lt;0.0001, chi-squared). The greatest proportion of level I and II abstracts were lightning oral (41.9%, 72/172), followed by posters (36.0%, 62/172). The best average LOE was observed for lightning oral (2.64, 95% CI 2.56, 2.72), with the poorest average LOE witnessed for moderated posters (2.90, 95% CI 2.83, 2.97). A significant difference was present in mean LOE between types of presentations (p&lt;0.0001, one-sided ANOVA). Conclusion: The majority of abstracts were level III evidence. The lightning oral sessions had the greatest proportion of level I and II evidence presented. Recent years of the conference have also seen the presentation of a greater number of level I and II evidence, which may suggest a shift towards generating and disseminating higher level evidence in emergency medicine.

Accuracy in precordial ECG lead placement: Improving performance through a peer-led educational intervention

Background and objectivesInaccurate electrocardiography (ECG) lead placement may lead to erroneous diagnoses, such as poor R wave progression. We sought to assess the accuracy of precordial ECG lead placement amongst hospital staff members, and to re-evaluate performance after an educational intervention. Methods and results100 randomly selected eligible staff members placed sticker dots on a mannequin, their positions were recorded on a radar plot and compared to the correct precordial lead positions. The commonest errors were placing V1 and V2 leads too superiorly, and V5 and V6 leads too medially.Following an educational intervention with the aid of moderated poster presentations and volunteer patients, the study was repeated six months later. 60 subjects correctly placed all leads, compared to 10 in the pre-intervention cohort (P<0.0001) with the proportion achieving correct placement of any lead rising from 0.34 to 0.83, (p<0.0001 for all leads). ConclusionIncorrect ECG lead placement is common. This may be addressed through regular training incorporated into annual induction processes for relevant health care professionals.

The American Urological Association (AUA) stands at the forefront of technology development and urological education for urologists and urological healthcare professionals worldwide. The 112th annual meeting brought together a wide range of researchers in the field of urology to access knowledge, up-to-date clinical guidelines and advances in research. The meeting consisted of plenary and moderated poster, podium and video sessions highlighting the latest research and advances in urological medicine. This report highlights some of the presentations on therapeutic developments for a range of urological conditions.

A report from the American Association of Urology Annual Meeting 2015 (May 15-19 - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA).

Sharing knowledge and setting standards were the main goals of the American Urological Association annual meeting 2015 held in the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. A short walk away from the famous French Quarter, and a walk that a very high number of attendees took daily for the duration of the conference to attend plenary, podium and moderated poster sessions wherein the latest research and advances in urologic medicine were being presented. Many novel scientific issues were discussed, notably in the setting of biomarkers cancer diagnosis, treatment and monitoring, but the conference included a vast array of topics covering all diseases affecting the urinary tract.
