Chronic pain can cause physical, mental and social effects. In order to reduce the harm caused by it, pain self-management is playing an increasingly important role at present. The stage of model has been used in the field of chronic pain, and it has excited great interest among clinicians and researchers in recent years. It is a psychological model which describes the process of behavior change. On the basis of this model, patients with chronic pain go through specific of change when attempting to selfmanage pain, and these stages reflect patient motivation for pain self-management. For example, patients in the pre-contemplation stage are not motivated to self-manage pain. In order to make clinical practice more effective,nursing intervention should be targeted at various groups. This article is to review the publications which the stages of model is studied in patients with chronic pain and to renew or improve the current existing nursing model.
