The dislocation field around a mode-II crack tip

A two dimensional distribution of dislocations compatible with slip line theory is used to simulate the plastic flow near the mode II crack tip. On the basis of this model, the critical shear stress τ c is derived from the variational form of the energy principle. In comparison with the critical tensile stress σ c obtained by Vilmann and Mura, it is found that τ c≈ 0.33σ c .
