A computer-based evaluation system: Its design, implementation and results obtained on a general chemistry course

Using multiple evaluation methods and systems give a comprehensive assessment. A computer-based multiple-choice assessment system was designed, implemented, posted online, and used to assess students as part of their final evaluation marks for a discipline. The online system of evaluation was intended to be used multiple times for evaluating the assimilation degree of a specific course at the end of the course. The data recorded for the period 2017–2023 with about 1400 distinct users were used to analyze the performance of the evaluation system. The system worked fine and a slight modification of it served well on remote evaluation during COVID-19 period. However, the upturn of mobile phone applications requires the creation of a system adapted to the new virtual reality.

The Leaky Home: Conceptualizing the Remote Control of Smart Technologies in the Domestic Sphere

Today many homes are accessible from afar, with mobile phones functioning as remote controls for technologies within the home. In this article we propose the ‘leaky home’ as a conceptual figure to understand how automated homes that leak through connected devices and sensors that collect, transmit, receive and share data are experienced and sensed by bodies within these distributed spaces. The leak brings together postmodern metaphors of fluidity and the 21st century discourse of information leaks, while maintaining infrastructural connotations of substances that shift domain in very tangible ways. By looking at a series of examples from media accounts and research conducted in Denmark, the UK, the USA and Australia, ranging from everyday family practices to digital coercive control, we explore how the care-control complex of the home is impacted by its leaky nature.

Minimum quantity lubrication grinding process for high aluminum-silicon glass mobile phone cover plates

Purpose The impact on both the environment and operator health is significant. As high-alumina silica glass finds applications in smart devices such as curved mobile phone screens, the grinding of complex curved surfaces necessitates cleaner and more efficient cooling and lubrication methods to enhance processing quality and improve grinding yield rates. This study aims to focus on grinding high-alumina silica glass using micro-lubrication technology and compares its performance with traditional cutting fluid cooling methods. Design/methodology/approach In the fabrication of mobile phone cover plates composed of high-alumina silicon glass, the incorporation of micro-lubrication grinding technology was undertaken, with the conventional cutting fluid cooling approach serving as the benchmark control group for comparative analysis. Findings The results indicate that increasing the spray pressure of micro-lubrication within a specific range contributes to reducing grinding surface roughness. At a grinding speed ranging from 25 to 35 m/s, using micro-lubrication can effectively replace the traditional cutting fluid cooling method, resulting in glass surfaces with roughness levels between 0.22 and 0.26. However, at grinding speeds exceeding 35 m/s, the insufficient pressure of the micro-lubricant mist hinders most of the oil mist from entering the grinding zone, leading to inferior cooling performance compared to cutting fluid cooling. Notably, at a grinding speed of 35 m/s, micro-lubrication demonstrates better effectiveness in suppressing chipping during glass grinding compared to traditional cutting fluid cooling methods. Originality/value Through the application of micro-lubrication grinding technology, a marked improvement in the grinding quality of high-alumina silicon mobile phone cover plate glass can be achieved, leading to a reduction in surface roughness, a decrease in processing defects and ultimately satisfying the demands for high-precision and high-quality fabrication of such cover plates. HIV retesting among people living with HIV in Lesotho in 2022.

Despite widespread HIV testing in sub-Saharan Africa, regular testing among at-risk populations is crucial for effective prevention. However, reports increasingly indicate retesting among people living with HIV (PLHIV), a group that would not require additional testing since they would already have received a confirmed diagnosis. We describe the demographic characteristics of PLHIV retesters in Lesotho, report the average number of HIV tests post-diagnosis among PLHIV, and share motivations for retesting. In August 2022, a nationally representative cohort in Lesotho participated in a cell phone survey about their HIV status and testing history. Study participants were recruited from a face-to-face survey conducted in 2020, Lesotho Population Based HIV Impact Assessment survey. Of the 1523 participants called, 1111 participants responded (72.9%) and 266 reported living with HIV. We found 18.8% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) reported retesting at least once for HIV, and 58% of PLHIV who reported retesting were likely or very likely to retest for HIV in the coming year. The main reason PLHIV reported retesting was because a health care worker offered the test (61.7%) followed by self-initiated testing to confirm their status (29.1%). Among male PLHIV who had a history of retesting, 92.0% were very likely or likely to retest, compared to only 30.6% of female PLHIV. We found almost a fifth of PLHIV in Lesotho reported a history of retesting for HIV, and 58% of PLHIV were likely or very likely to retest for HIV in the coming year. Educating providers and men living with HIV could reduce retesting among PLHIV.

I-vector and variability compensation techniques for mobile phone recognition

Mobile phone recognition consists of trying to identify the mobile phone brand or model, which is very important in forensic analysis. In this paper, we exploit the audio recordings to realize this task. Audio data conveys many information, one of them is related to the source of records, i.e., is a specific audio was captured by a given mobile phone. In order to separate between this particular information and the rest of audio content, we introduce the I-vector technique. Additionally, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Within-Class Covariance Normalization (WCCN) methods were used in different ways to compensate the speaker and channel variability. We evaluate the performance of our proposed system by correct rate recognition based on Gaussian Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (GPLDA) and Cosine Similarity Score (CSS) methods. To train the mobile phone models and do tests, two datasets were prepared: the public MOBIPHONE database and a novel local database. Experiments done with different configurations demonstrate the effectiveness of I-vectors models with the combination of LDA – WCCN compensation techniques and CSS as a similarity measurement method. A correct recognition rates of 97.23 %, 98.91 %, and 99.45 % were obtained for MOBIPHONE, the local Same Environment (SE) and Different Environment (DE) databases, respectively.

IMPROVING WATER QUALITY MONITORING AND PARTICIPATORY MONITORING OF THE AQUA PROJECT APPLICATION

Introduction Water quality monitoring plays a key role in promoting environmental sustainability. Water is a vital resource for life and its availability and quality are intrinsically linked to human well-being and health. Through constant monitoring, it is possible to identify and mitigate pollutants, the Aqua project proposes to present a solution for evaluating and monitoring water quality, using a cell phone application and a very low-cost kit, integrating everything into an online platform. line with the aim of establishing a participatory monitoring network for rivers and water bodies. Results and Discussion The initial version of the Aqua1,2 project application, which is capable of determining: nitrite, organic matter, ortho-phosphate, ammonia and iron, all contaminants of water bodies3, stored the information only on the cell phone itself, and the georeferencing was done in a manual, where the operator himself had to manually record where the sample was taken. Furthermore, it was not available on Google Play, which made it difficult for less skilled people to install it. The application was rewritten, and is no longer local, running exclusively on the cell phone and was migrated to the cloud, now the data is also stored in a public database, where other researchers, or interested entities can have access, the account is no longer be local and is now stored on the internet, georeferencing is also now more accurate, as the application reads the location through the phone's own GPS system, and installation can be done via Google Play, removing one of the difficulties for use of the application. Conclusions With these modifications, the objective of participatory monitoring has now become easier to achieve, as the data of all users can be accessed via the internet, they have become more secure as they are no longer on the device, and the location of the sample location has become much easier. more accurate, in addition to allowing data integration.

Low power RTL implementation of Tiny-YOLO-v2 DCNN hardware accelerator on Virtex-7 FPGA

Deep Convolution Neural Networks (DCNNs) are widely used in real-time applications, including image classification, speech recognition, and object detection. However, there are challenges for real-time applications on portable devices like mobile phones or embedded systems. Most object detection models are optimized for desktop configurations, requiring fast GPUs. Shallower networks with fewer computational complexities have been proposed for real-time detection, but ultimately compromise detection accuracy. Performance and complexity trade-offs are significant for computationally complex deep networks. This work aims to implement the CNN-based object detection model Tiny-Yolo-v2 on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using Register Transfer Logic (RTL) as a native language. Hardware implementation is synthesized on The AMD Virtex 7 FPGA VC709 Connectivity Kit using VHDL code on Vivado 2020.1. This is the first, up to the authors' knowledge, RTL implementation of the Tiny-Yolo-v2 object identification algorithm on FPGA. The power consumed by the CNN layers equals 7.09W at a frequency of 100MHz.

Mobile Application Development for Prepaid Water Meter Based on LC Sensor

This study presents a novel low-cost and low-power prepaid water meter system that combines tokenization and LC sensors to monitor water consumption accurately with mobile application via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity compared to conventional meters. Water meters play a vital role in monitoring water usage in Indonesia. Postpaid billing methods that rely on manual data recording are a source of concern due to potential inaccuracies caused by human error. This study presents the development of a prepaid water meter system that integrates LC sensors, BLE connectivity, a tokenization mechanism, and a mobile application to address this issue. The system offers a cost-effective solution by utilizing BLE + Global System for Mobile (GSM) from the user’s mobile phone. Using the design thinking methodology, the mobile application for the prepaid water meter achieved a usability testing score of 80. The load testing results for the back-end server, conducted with a sample size of 515 users, revealed a back-end latency of 1.973 milliseconds and an error rate of 8.74%. Furthermore, the LC sensors integrated into the PWM device showed an average error rate of 1.33%. The power consumption during each work cycle was measured at 129 mA and each battery is expected to last six years. Overall, with simple LC sensors, this system can precisely measure water usage.

Observational Study on Passenger Behavior in the Beijing Subway

To understand the primary behaviors of contemporary passengers during subway travel, a traditional observational research method was employed to observe and record the behaviors of individuals in the last car of Beijing Subway Line 5. The observed behaviors were then analyzed and explained using relevant theories. The results indicated that: a. The main behaviors of subway passengers included activities such as using mobile phones, sleeping, daydreaming, reading, and interacting with others. b. The predominant use of mobile phones was closely related to the development of the internet era and the widespread adoption of smartphones. c. The limited communication and interaction among subway passengers were linked to the phenomenon of interpersonal apathy prevalent in modern society.

A Lightweight Blind Obstacle Detection Network for Mobile Side

Abstract. China has the longest and widest distribution of blind corridors in the world, but in many cities they are virtually non-existent, with all kinds of obstacles affecting the movement of the blind. Thus, guaranteeing safe traveling for the blind has become an increasingly important topic. Some existing assistive traveling devices for the blind have problems such as poor portability and low-cost performance. With the rise of the mobility era and the rapid development of deep learning technology, the target detection of blind obstacles on cell phones has become feasible. In this paper, we take the target detection model YOLOv8n as the base network, redesign the neck of the network, use GS convolution as the basis, adopt one-time aggregation and cross-channel branching to build a lightweight module, and use the CARAFE operator as the up-sampling method, and stack the lightweight module with CARAFE operator to build a new feature fusion layer, forming a lightweight feature-aware enhanced target detection network. The results show that the accuracy still reaches 99.5% of the original network under the premise that the model size is reduced by 1.2%, and the improved network achieves a balance between accuracy and lightweight.

12-year-old students of Spain and their digital ecosystem: the cyberculture of the Frontier Collective

In the context of primary education, students aged 11–12 years old begin to integrate digital devices and online behaviours that are more common and widespread at the secondary level. The objective of this study is to understand the factors that determine the initial digital ecosystem of students, and to evaluate the risks that these students face at a certain threshold age. The 356 participants in the sample completed a questionnaire designed ad hoc based on the findings of other studies with the same aim. The identified correlations and the regression equations obtained indicate, fundamentally, that two out of every three students who own a smartphone use it to communicate with family and friends. Furthermore, the use of mobile phones encourages young people to join and participate in social networks at an early age. The study also reveals that at this age, students use social networks mainly for the consumption of audiovisual content and not so much to share personal information of a critical nature. Finally, students in this particular age group are considered at a threshold age because they begin using smartphones regularly, making autonomous decisions without sufficient supervision regarding digital risks, thus becoming part of the Frontier Collective.

Smart Phone Application Reminder for Patients with Fixed Orthodontic Appliance to Improve Oral Hygiene

INTRODUCTION: In light of the extensive use of mobile phones and their associated software applications (Apps), as well as the undisputed role of reminders and Apps in behavioral interventions, the goal of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of an application for smartphones (Brush DJ) to enhance oral hygiene compliance in individuals with fixed orthodontic therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 82 patients between the ages of 18 and 22 were divided into four groups, two of which (the experimental group and the control group) had just begun fixed orthodontic treatment (called New) and the other two (the experimental group and the control group) were have passed fifth months from the beginning of the treatment (called Old). Patients in the intervention group were asked to use the Brush DJ smartphone App after getting traditional oral hygiene training, compared to patients in the control group who got conventional oral hygiene instruction. At baseline (T0), 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks following the start of the study, the plaque index (PI) and marginal bleeding index (MBI) were measured. Only patients with the software completed a questionnaire to determine how frequently and how long they brushed their teeth each day. RESULTS: Both New and Old orthodontic cases in the intervention groups showed improvements in PI, whereas the parameter of bleeding showed no significant differences. During the follow-up period, application usage was associated with a higher brushing frequency and duration. CONCLUSION: Apps might significantly improve the oral hygiene compliance of orthodontic patients by acting as reminders and motivators.

“Phones off while school's on”: Evaluating problematic phone use and the social, wellbeing, and academic effects of banning phones in schools

AbstractBackground and aimsMobile phone bans in secondary schools are claimed to reduce student distraction and promote learning and face-to-face socializing. Currently, the evidence on phone bans is limited. The aim of this preregistered study was to evaluate the South Australian mobile phone ban's effects on students' problematic phone use, academic engagement, school belonging, and bullying. The study also sought to identify student variables that predict phone ban compliance.MethodsAs the ban was phased in over 2023, a 2 (phone ban: yes/no) × 2 (time: baseline, 1-month follow-up) repeated-measures design was employed. Students (n = 1,282 at baseline; n = 1,256 at follow-up) in Grades 7 to 12 were recruited from five public secondary schools. Surveys included measures drawn from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).ResultsProblematic phone use was reported by 2.6% of the sample. Being older and a more frequent user of social media predicted lower phone ban compliance. Linear mixed models indicated that ban and no ban school groups did not differ significantly in terms of problematic phone use, academic engagement, and school belonging. There was slightly higher bullying in the ban group but bullying decreased significantly in both groups.DiscussionImposing access restrictions may not affect the underlying psychological mechanisms that drive problematic phone use. Although these results indicate limited to no short-term benefits of the ban, further evaluation with more sensitive methodologies is recommended.ConclusionsStudent-technology interactions in learning institutions should be continually monitored to determine the optimal balance to support student etiquette, learning, and wellbeing.

In order to validate the prototype and guarantee its effectiveness, scientific research is carried out into the use of solar energy and its effects in Brazil, which model of board to use and the ideal electrical circuit to meet the proposal and requirements of the project. The tests are carried out on simulators, test boards and indicators. The prototype is tested and assembled semi-professionally on a phenolite board, together with a box phenolite board, together with a box designed by his own hand printed on a 3D printer.

Robust and accurate visual geo-localization using prior map constructed by handheld LiDAR SLAM with camera image and terrestrial LiDAR point cloud

ABSTRACT Visual geo-localization using prior map of known environments has extensive applications in the fields such as self-driving, augmented reality and navigation. Currently, such prior maps are usually constructed by visual SLAM or SFM. However, the recent advances in LiDAR SLAM technology with RGB camera demonstrate great potential in efficient and accurate prior map construction and visual geo-localization. In this research, we developed a novel prior map construction approach which seamlessly integrates a handheld LiDAR SLAM system, a global LiDAR localization algorithm and a sparse set of terrestrial LiDAR scans as accurate control within a factor graph optimization framework. The developed LiDAR SLAM system augmented by terrestrial LiDAR scans achieves an improved mapping accuracy of 8 cm under GNSS-denied conditions in the areas over 50,000 m2 while the state-of-art FAST-LIO2 alone fails and produces a mapping error over 30 m. The results show that a competitive accuracy of visual geo-localization on a mobile phone using the constructed prior map is achieved (i.e. 60 and 76 cm in two tests respectively). Finally, this work also demonstrates a novel LiDAR point cloud fusion method that produces optimized and consistent coarse-to-fine 3D reconstruction in large and complex scenes.

Perceived stress and life satisfaction: the mediating roles of sport commitment and mobile phone addiction

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction under the influence of mobile phone addiction and sport commitment. Participants were recruited from eight universities located in six Chinese cities, naming Chongqing, Maoming, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shijiazhuang, and Zhengzhou. The sample consisted of 575 participants enrolled in Chinese universities, with 309 (53.7%) being female students. The mediation model was tested under the structural equation modeling framework using Mplus. Results showed that (1) perceived stress had a direct and negative impact on life satisfaction, and it also had indirect effects through the two mediators; (2) perceived stress positively predicted mobile phone addiction, which, in turn, negatively impacted life satisfaction; (3) perceived stress negatively predicted sport commitment, which, in turn, positively impacted life satisfaction. By emphasizing the mediating roles of mobile phone addiction and sport commitment, our findings highlight the importance of addressing these factors in interventions aimed at encouraging college students’ well-being. Implications for intervention design to promoter health among university students should take into account the mediating roles of mobile phone addiction and sport commitment.

Depression, anxiety, and stress in the Chilean Educational System: children and adolescents post-pandemic prevalence and variables

The mental health of children and adolescents in the Chilean Educational System (ChES) has become a severe post-pandemic public health problem. This cross-sectional study, which included 1,174 children and adolescents from five Chilean regions, used the DASS-21 scale, focusing on determining the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as identifying associated risk factors. The results exposed a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress (60.2%, 63.6%, and 50.2%, respectively). Risk factors for depression involve being female, having separated parents, being in high school, having a cell phone, difficulty sleeping, ruminative thoughts, and low self-esteem. For anxiety, factors included being female, being 12 years old, owning a cell phone, having sleep problems, having ruminations, having low self-esteem, and being an atheist. For stress, factors were identified as being female, owning a cell phone, sleep problems, ruminations, low self-esteem, being atheist, as well as extensive use of social networks. The research underscores the urgent need for intervention by educational authorities, given the marked deterioration in the mental health of children and adolescent students in the ChES, to prevent long-term consequences.

The Accuracy of RTK enabled Mobile Phones in RTK denied Areas

Abstract. Surveyors often encounter challenges when tasked with measuring points in regions where buildings disrupt satellite visibility. The precise surveying of points in these areas typically relies on employing total stations. This method effectively extends high precision from unaffected zones (where satellite visibility is assured) to those areas where disruption occurs due to buildings. Total stations achieve this by executing distance and angle measurements from a reference point coordinate to the location where satellite visibility is compromised. The process is notably time-consuming, thereby incurring significant costs. Moreover, the intricate nature of this surveying process necessitates specialized skills and expertise, contributing further to the overall expense. In this study, we investigate an approach based on RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) enabled mobile phones and photogrammetry to achieve the same. In principle, this approach has a similar philosophy. However, instead of working with a few points with good satellite visibility that are obtained by a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) rover, the procedure works with hundreds of observations with varying accuracy. Those accuracies depend on the satellite visibility. Each observation captures an image from the mobile phone together with the GNSS signal and its accuracy. Angle and distance measurements that traditionally are observed by a total station are retrieved by photogrammetry on the total image collection.

The Relationship Between the Burpee Movement Program and Strength and Endurance Performance Measures in Active Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

This paper aimed to assess the motor performance in the Burpee Movement Program through the acceleration recorded by the Phyphox mobile app and define its relationship to strength and endurance parameters. Altogether, 15 students in physical education teaching completed the 3 × 3 min Burpee Movement Program, consisting of the repeated execution of a single burpee with maximum effort at regular intervals triggered by a sound signal. During the load phase, the intensity of the burpee and the fatigue index expressed in percentages were evaluated by means of the acceleration recorded through a mobile phone. In the second part of testing, we evaluated the performance parameters during a bench press and squat where the intensity was measured using a linear displacement transducer (Tendo Power Analyzer) and aerobic endurance was assessed with a 20 m shuttle run test (20 mSR). The average intensity of the burpee ranged from 3.12 to 11.12 ms-2. The fatigue index ranged from -21.95% (which represented an increase in performance) to 33.63% (which represented a decrease in performance). The performances in the bench presses ranged from 58 to 480 W and from 175 to 696 W during the squats. The distance in the 20 m shuttle run test (20 mSR) ranged from 540 to 2000 m. The intensity of the burpee showed a significant correlation to the performances achieved in the bench presses and squats r = 0.82 and 0.79. The fatigue index showed a significant correlation to the 20 m shuttle run test (20 mSR) r = -0.67. These findings indicate that in, our case, the results from the Burpee Movement Program are significantly associated with the participants' strength and endurance abilities. We recommend using BMP for the development of strength-endurance abilities, but further exploration is needed regarding the potential use of BMP as a diagnostic test.

Demonstrating Brownian motion and estimating Avogadro’s number using simple tools: a practical guide for students

Abstract Brownian motion provides crucial observational evidence for the kinetic molecular theory by demonstrating the random perpetual movement of small particles. This phenomenon underscores the existence and behaviour of atoms and molecules, fundamentally supporting our current understanding of molecular kinetic theory. Remarkably, in 1905 Albert Einstein was able to predict this motion exactly purely from a theoretical point of view and in 1908 Jean Perrin provided experimental proof. This provided experimental proof of the existence of atoms and molecules. This paper outlines a method to demonstrate and record Brownian motion using a drop of homogenised low fat milk, a microscope and a mobile phone. The captured video files can be analysed with Physics Tracker software, allowing for the estimation of Avogadro’s number.
