Potentiometric Studies on Stepwise Mixed Ligand Complex Formation Copper(II)-Iminodiacetic Acid-Hydroxy Acid

Potentiometric studies are described for mixed ligand complex formation of copper(II) with iminodiacetic acid (IMDA) as primary ligand and certain hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid (SA), 5-sulphosalicylic acid (SSA), tiron (3.5-pyrocatechol disulphonic acid PDS) and chromotropic salt (3,6-disulpho-1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene disodium salt CS) as secondary ligands. The pH titrations of the reaction mixtures containing copper nitrate, iminodiacetic acid and one of the secondary ligands in equimolar concentrations indicated the formation of 1:1:1 mixed ligand complex. From the nature of the titration curves it appears that in the lower buffer region 1:1 copper (II) -iminodiacetic acid complex is initially formed and the formation of mixed ligand complex takes place only after the combination with the primary ligand is complete. However, in the case of Cu (II) -IMDA-HQSA system it appears that the mixed ligand complex is not formed stepwise, but the chelation with both the ligands takes place simultaneously. The formation constants (log K) of the mixed ligand chelates of Cu (II) -IMDA-SA. Cu (II)-IMDA-SSA. Cu (II) -IMDA-Tiron and Cu (II) -IMDA-CS system have been calculated. All the titrations were carried out at room temperature (25±1°C) using 5 × 10 3 м concentration of metal and ligand ions (μ= 0.1) with the help of potassium nitrate.

Cobalt(II) and zinc(II) form mixed complexes of the types MAB in solutions containing the following pairs (A and B) of ligands, ethylenediamine and histamine, ethylenediamine and serine anion, and histamine and serine anion. Stability constants of these complexes have been computed from titration data. At higher pH values, small amounts of the mixed complexes MA2B and MAB2 were also present. In all cases, stability constants for mixed ligand complexes were comparable with, or greater than, the mean of constants for the complexes containing only one kind of ligand.

Mixed ligand complex formation by nickel(II) ion

Nickel(II) forms mixed complexes, NiAB, NiA2B, and NiAB2, containing two different types, A and B, of ligand molecule, with each of the three possible pairs of the ligands ethylenediamine, histamine, and serine anion. The stability constants of the mixed complexes have been computed from pH titration data. In all three systems containing equimolar mixtures of nickel(II) and the two ligands, the complex NiAB is a major species, and the other mixed complexes are present in smaller amounts. However, appreciable concentrations of the corresponding 1:1:2 or 1:2:1 complexes are formed if the proportion of either ligand is increased in any mixture.

Copper(II) ion forms mixed complexes, CuAB, containing two different ligand molecules, with each of the six possible pairs of the ligands ethylenediamine, histamine, serine monoanion, and salicylate dianion. A general computer programme has been developed to calculate the stability constants of these mixed complexes from pH titration data on 1 : 1 : 1 mixtures of copper(II) and the two ligands. These constants are of comparable magnitude with the constants for the corresponding bis-complexes CuA2 and CuB2.

Formation of mixed ligand complexes in the MA 3 + MB 3 system the interaction between BiCl 3 and BiI 3 in dioxane

A spectrophemical method was developed to determine the equilibrium constants of the reactions which describe the interaction of complexes of the type MA 3 and MB 3. The essence of the method is that by using one of the components in large excess a system of effectively two components is obtained; as a result the molar extinction coefficients of one of the mixed ligand complexes is determined. The other mixed ligand complex can be treated in a similar manner; and knowing these data, by examining systems of three components the appropriate equilibrium constants are also determined. As a model system the interaction of BiCl 3 and BiI 3 in dioxane solution was studied and the following equilibrium constants were determined: ▪
