Station managers and the status of AM broadcasting

A nationwide sample of 300 AM station General Managers found less than universal compliance with NRSC‐1 and NRSC‐2 standards, more AM stereo transmission than previously estimated, continued widespread use of music formats, misleading reports in the trade press, and positive attitudes about the prospects of digital audio broadcasting (DAB).

Accounting methods and managerial discretion: The case of dollar-value LIFO

This paper focuses on inconsistencies in cost-flow behavior associated with the use of dollarvalue LIFO. These inconsistencies can lead to confusing inventory valuations, potentially misleading accounting reports, incorrect purchasing decisions, and unanticipated tax results. Understanding these effects will enhance the use of dollar-value LIFO as a management tool and will improve the interpretation of financial accounting information. With dollar-value LIFO for multiple items, much of the conventional wisdom about LIFO vanishes. The relationships among inventory purchases, inventory liquidations, and gross margin are derived.

Idiopathic Sclerochoroidal Calcification: New Observations

Two cases of idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification are reported with follow-up of two and ten years. In addition we have reviewed 102 cases of choroidal osteoma, including six misleading case reports which actually described idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification and not choroidal osteoma. Clinical manifestation and the angiographic features of idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification are outlined. The differential diagnosis of intraocular deposition of calcium salts is discussed in detail.

The news as myth: fact and context in journalism

In non-technical language, this book argues that the myth of the news is its supposed objectivity and that the very forms which presumably guarantee veracity ultimately lead to consistently incomplete and misleading news reports. This book may be of importance to journalists, sociologists, political scientists and mass communication experts both for its analysis of objectivity and subjectivity as well as for its practical demonstration of the means by which misinformation is introduced into objective reports. The examples of news stories in this book also provides a series of case studies which may be of particular interest to educators teaching journalism or focusing on the relation between reportage and society at large.

The Clinical Features of Atrial Flutter and Their Therapeutic Implications

Analysis of 71 patients with atrial flutter delineated two categories of patients. One group (40 patients) had severe decompensated heart disease. Another group (31 patients) was free of structural heart disease or had disease not severe enough to result in congestive failure. Of the latter group 23 had an acute noncardiac illness. In 14 it was a disease of the bronchopulmonary system. Those patients with severe heart disease seldom reverted without electrical countershock during the first five days after hospital admission. The majority of the latter group reverted within five days without such therapy. Those observations are useful to the clinician who must select therapy for his patient with atrial flutter. Failure to appreciate this variability may lead to conflicting or misleading reports regarding the efficacy of newer forms of therapy. Atrial FlutterCHESTVol. 66Issue 2PreviewThe paper by Lindsay and Hurst on the “Clinical Features of Atrial Flutter” appearing in this issue (see page 114 ) presents a most interesting review of a group of selected patients with this arrhythmia as seen in a Veterans Hospital population. The highly selective nature of this study probably accounts for a difference in our experience as contrasted to the authors’, since in a survey of 200 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease1 our group did not find any instance of atrial flutter. The results of hysterectomy for carcinoma of the cervix have been so unsatisfactory in the experience of most operators that the question naturally arises whether there is any necessity of subjecting the woman so suffering to one operation more serious than another, if the lesser one will do as much to ameliorate her suffering, or give her as long a respite from the ravages of the disease as the more serious one. CERVICAL CANCER TO BE STUDIED ALONE. Hysterectomy for carcinoma of the body of the uterus, when the malignant process has not invaded the peritoneal covering of the organ or the perimetrium, gives results so satisfactory that no one can question its advisability in every case.
