Miskonsepsi Siswa SMP Dalam Memahami Ciri-ciri Bangun Segi Empat

In this study, this qualitative research aimed to describe the misconceptions students of junior high school in understanding characteristics of quadrilateral plane figure. The misconceptions instrument were administered to three students in 8th grade of junior high school. Students understanding were analyzed by misconceptions test with CRI (Certainty of Response Index) method with interviews. The misconceptions in understanding the characteristics of quadrilateral plane figure (trapezoid and parallelogram) were the main result of this study. Students showed the same misconceptions in understanding the characteristics of quadrilateral plane figure. The first, Students assumed the diagonal trapezoid isosceles is the only a pairs of same length segment. The second, students only known the parallelogram and rectangle shape are in the regular quadrilateral shape (if the parallelogram and rectangle has different position or irregular shape then it is no called a quadrilateral). In particular, the results indicated that the students had misconceptions in understanding characteristics of quadrilateral plane figure. The misconception occurs because the ability of student understanding is low or incomplete. So, the teacher should gave more problem and images for understanding the characteristics of plane figure.

Could Physics Teachers Also Have Misconceptions on Basic Kinematics?

The role of a physics teacher in learning is to facilitate student activities to construct correct conceptual understanding as that of a scientist. As the primary source of knowledge for students, a physics teacher is required to have the right concept, but this demand is not necessarily fully fulfilled. This study aims to determine the profile of physics teachers’ understanding of concepts on kinematics material detected by a four-tier misconception test. Participants in this study were 20 high school physics teachers in Surabaya. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that the dominant misconceptions included: (1) Two objects that make the same displacement at the same time interval will have the same velocity, regardless of the type of movement of the two objects (2) Objects that move vertically straight up or down will always have the acceleration of motion equal to the acceleration of gravity which is directed downwards. (3) As long as the object’s position is at positive coordinates, it means the object is moving in the forward direction. (4) The graph of velocity against time, which has a positive gradient, means that the object always moves forward (5) In parabolic motion, the length of time an object is in the air only depends on the length of its path, the longest path will require the longest time. (6) In parabolic motion, the final speed of an object when it lands on the ground depends not only on its initial speed but also on its elevation angle. The findings of several misconceptions above show that even a physics teacher cannot escape misconceptions. Therefore, it is crucial for a teacher to be able to remedy the misconceptions he suffers so that these misconceptions are not transmitted to the students he teaches. This finding is the first step for researchers to detect misconceptions, followed by the application of certain learning methods to remedy misconceptions in future research.

Identification of Students' Misconceptions Using Six Tier Diagnostic Test with CRI (Certainty of Response Index) on Wave

The concept of waves is essential in physics learning. This study aims to obtain a six-level diagnostic test instrument accompanied by a Certainty of Response Index (CRI) and use it to identify students' level of conceptual understanding and misconceptions on wave material. This study used the Research and Development (R&D) method with a sample of 220 students. Misconception data was obtained using a misconception test in the form of multiple-choice questions. There are 32 questions with six stages consisting of multiple choices answer, the level of confidence in choosing answers, the source of answer choices, the choice of reasons in answering questions, the level of confidence in selecting causes, and the source of students' reasons in answering the questions. The results showed that the percentage of students who experienced misconceptions in the whole question was 36%. Students who understood the concept was 30%, and 34% of students did not understand the concept. In addition, 61% of students chose answers and reasons for solutions based on personal opinions. The conclusion is that misconceptions are caused by student errors in applying the concepts received in the given problem, and students tend to choose the correct answers and reasons when the issue presented is equipped with a picture and only requires one step to get the correct answer.

Development of Four-tier Diagnostic Test Instrument to Introduce Misconceptions and Identify Causes of Student Misconceptions in the Sub-topic of Bernoulli's Principle

The objective of this study is to create a misconception test instrument for identifying and understanding misconceptions in students regarding Bernoulli's Principle, particularly during hybrid learning. The validity and reliability of the test instrument are described in order to assess its effectiveness. Descriptive analysis techniques were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the test instrument exhibits high validity (94.16%) and reliability (0.72%). On average, 34.9% of students were found to possess misconceptions regarding the sub-topic of Bernoulli's Principle. Item number 5 was identified as having the highest misconception rate (53%), specifically in relation to determining the speed of airflow above and below an aircraft's wings. These findings indicate that some students lack a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts underlying Bernoulli's Principle, relying solely on its equations. Consequently, this research suggests that teachers can mitigate misconceptions and identify their causes by employing a four-tier diagnostic test, especially in the context of the sub-topic of Bernoulli's Principle

Reduksi Miskonsepsi Siswa pada Mata Pelajaran PAI di SMPN 5 Jombang

This research was conducted to identify the types of misconceptions that commonly occur in students, identify the factors that influence the occurrence of misconceptions, and identify effective teaching strategies for reducing student misconceptions. This research uses mixed methods, which involve both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The research sample consisted of eighth-grade students at SMPN 5 Jombang. Data was collected through a misconception test, which consisted of questions based on the concept of PAI, class observations, and interviews with students and teachers of PAI. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The results showed that there were several types of misconceptions that were common among students, such as misconceptions about worship, aqidah, and religious history. Factors that influence the occurrence of misconceptions include a lack of understanding of basic concepts, the use of less effective learning media, and the influence of the social environment. In addition, this study also identified several effective teaching strategies for reducing students' misconceptions, such as the use of constructivist approaches to learning, interactive learning media, and group discussions. The findings of this study make an important contribution to improving the quality of PAI learning at SMPN 5 Jombang and can also be adopted by other educational institutions. PAI teachers can use the results of this study as a guide in designing effective teaching strategies to reduce students' misconceptions. By reducing misconceptions, it is hoped that students will have a better understanding of PAI subjects, thereby creating a more effective learning environment and supporting the development of students' understanding of religion.

Development of a HOTS-Leveled Two-Tier Multiple Choice (TTMC) Test to Measure Student Misconceptions in Islamic Studies

This study aims to develop a Two-Tier Multiple Choice (TTMC) HOTS-level test to measure student misconceptions in Islamic learning. The research method used is the 4-D method by Thiagarajan with descriptive data analysis. The results of the misconception test using TTMC showed variations in students' answers between those who understood the concept, had a pure misconception, guessed the misconception, and did not understand the concept. The feasibility of the evaluation tool is met, and the identification of misconceptions is divided into four categories. The percentage of students who understand the concept is 49%, pure misconception is 11%, guesses the misconception is 17%, and does not understand the concept is 23%. This study contributes to measuring students' misconceptions in Islamic learning and can be used to improve teaching effectiveness and students' understanding of concepts

The Development of Web Diagnostic Test as a Misconception Tool in Work and Energy

At this time, the assessment and measurement of the concept’s level of understanding are considered less effective. This is due to the use of conventional media. With this in mind, researchers are interested in conducting research on developing assessments and measuring the understanding of concepts using web media. Web of the comprehension level test will be automatically stored in real-time on the system so that educators can process the data on the results of the misconception test and can also be seen by students as the results of the comprehension level test. This study aims to develop a web diagnostic test and identify students’ misconceptions about effort and energy as the subject matter. This study uses the ADDIE development model. The results obtained from this study were that the responses given by users showed good results. This means that the media used to measure student misconceptions is interactive enough to be used as a support in the learning process.

CORRECTING THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF 6th GRADE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT PHOTOSYNTHETIC MATERIALS WITH THE HELP OF ANIMATED VIDEOS


 
 
 
 Abstract: Science subject is one of the subjects that contains abstract concepts. These abstract concepts can cause students to have difficulty building knowledge resulting in misconceptions. This study describes how the use of animated videos can correct the misconceptions of 6th grade elementary school students on photosynthetic materials. The method of data collection is done by means of observation. Data analysis was carried out by comparing the misconceptions test results before and after using the animated video. The data obtained are presented naturally and then analyzed descriptively to get an overview of the facts. The use of photosynthetic animated videos in this study showed significant results in 6th grade students at SDN Tunge 2 Kediri for the 2022/2023 academic year. There was a drastic decrease in the percentage of misconceptions, namely 72%. It means that video animation can be used to increase students' understanding of photosynthesis material.
 
 
 

Correcting Misconceptions and Enhancement of Reasoning Skills: Simulation-Supported Dual Situated Learning Model

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of using the Simulation-Supported Dual Situated Learning Model (Sim-DSLM) to correct students’ misconceptions, retention, and enhancement of reasoning skills. To address this objective, a quantitative, experimental approach with pre- and post-learning tests was employed. The researcher developed two tests: (1) a physics misconceptions test and (2) a reasoning thinking skills test, which were both checked for validity and reliability. The tests were administered twice, before and after lessons were taught, to 57 participants recruited randomly from the seventh grade in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The experimental group (30) was taught using the Sim-DSLM and the control group (27) was taught according to the traditional lecture method. The results from both the physics misconceptions test and the reasoning thinking skills test showed that the experimental group statistically scored higher than the control group in the post-learning test. The effective values of using Sim-DSLM to correct students’ misconceptions, retention, and enhancement of reasoning thinking skills were high. The researcher recommends that teachers should be trained to uncover and remediate the misconceptions that students have using strategies such as the Sim-DSLM. INSTRUMEN TES THREE TIER MULTIPLE CHOICE SEBAGAI DETEKSI MISKONSEPSI PADA MATERI ASAM BASA

Misconception is defined as a result of someone's mistake in understanding a concept. This research was conducted with the aim of proving students' misconceptions on acid-base material using a three-tier multiple choice test instrument, and determine the factors that influence the occurrence of misconceptions in students. The type of research.used is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The research was carried out in high schools in Palembang for the academic year 2021/2022 with 35 people. Data collection used a misconception test instrument, teacher and student interviews. The results showed misconceptions on acid-base material with an overall average of 54.33%. The results expected that the three-level multiple choice test instrument can be used by teachers to identify misconceptions that occur in other students.

Teaching Viscosity to Students with Special Needs in Vocational High Schools from Daily Products: From Literature Review on Concept, Misconception, to Teaching and Learning Process

Students with special needs are students who have barriers in their developmental and academic aspects. They need a learning media that meets their needs. This study aimed to demonstrate the strategies in teaching using the experimental demonstration to students with special needs and to identify misconceptions during the teaching and learning process. To support our teaching strategies, an experimental demonstration (recorded by video as the learning media) was used. This study used an experimental method (single subject research) with A-B (Pre-test and Post-test) research design for students with special needs (i.e., intellectual disabilities and hearing impairment), and the results of teaching students with special needs were compared to that of teaching general vocational high school students. The experimental activity was done to get the viscosity level of eight substances (i.e., syrup, cooking oil, hand soap, liquid detergent, floor cleaner liquid, condensed milk, and mineral water). Condensed milk has the highest viscosity, and mineral water is the lowest. The result of this study showed that a combination of experimental demonstration and video is effective for improving the understanding of students with special needs, confirmed by the increasing pre and post-test results and supported by interviews. In addition, the identification data of the misconception test showed a decrease in misconceptions after carrying out the learning process using video. The use of interesting media with simple explanations made it easier for students with special needs to understand the material being taught.

The Relationship of Critical Thinking Skills and Misconceptions on Science Learning

One of the abilities needed in learning is critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are skills that can analyze and evaluate information. Critical thinking skills can relate to the occurrence of misconceptions. This relationship can be positive or negative for students. The research objective is to analyze the relationship between critical thinking skills and misconceptions using a five-tier instrument. The method used in this research is correlational. The sampling technique used simple random sampling, taking 25% of the population of 80 students. The data collection instrument used a questionnaire on critical thinking skills and a misconception test sheet. The descriptive results of misconceptions are 6.00, meaning that misconceptions are categorized as moderate. The descriptive results of critical thinking skills show that the mean of critical thinking skills is 68.50, meaning that critical thinking skills are considered good. Then from the correlation results, there is a significant relationship between the two variables. It means that there is a relationship between critical thinking skills and misconceptions. When misconceptions are high, students' critical thinking skills will be low. Conversely, if the misconceptions experienced by students are low, the critical thinking skills possessed by students are high.

Strengthening pre-service mathematics teachers’ knowledge of students’ thought processes, students’ misconceptions and text analysis skill

Mathematics teachers may not be able to fix students’ errors and misconceptions unless they are trained on how to identify, recognize, respond and effectively remediate students’ thought processes and students’ misconceptions. This study determines the effects of solve-reflect-pose strategy (SRPS) on prospective mathematics teachers, students thought processes ability, students’ conceptions and misconceptions ability and their text analysis skill level (TASL). The pre- and post-test research model was used. There were two groups, which were named experimental group (consisted of 92 participants taught with the SRPS) and control group (consisted of 90 participants taught using the modified conventional method (MCM). The quantitative data was collected through an instrument subdivided into three, namely: knowledge of students’ thought processes test, knowledge of students’ conceptions and misconceptions test, and TASL test; and interview protocol was used to collect qualitative data. The formulated research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics while independent sample t-test was used to analyze the hypotheses. Results showed that the effects of SRPS instruction were statistically significantly different in the mean post-test achievement scores on knowledge of students’ thought process test, students’ misconceptions test and analysis skill level test.

Determining Turkish high school students’ misconceptions about electric charge imbalance by using a four-tier misconception test

This study aims to determine Turkish high school students’ misconceptions about the electric charge imbalance by using a four-tier misconception test, where the main questions are accompanied by a question about the reason for the answer, as well as student declarations about their degrees of certainty. A four-tier electric charge imbalance misconception test (4-tier ECIMT) was developed by Onder-Celikkanli (2019) in the context of her dissertation. It consists of 24 questions, each consisting of four tiers. It is limited to (a) electric interactions between charged bodies, (b) electric interactions between a charged body and a neutral body, and (c) electric interactions between two neutral bodies. It was administered to 402 tenth-grade Turkish high school students in Turkey. At the end of the study, some new misconceptions were introduced to the literature. One of the most important ones is ‘the magnitude of the electric force between the two objects is independent of the relative permittivity of the medium between them’.

How Critical Thinking Skills Influence Misconception in Electric Field

<p style="text-align:justify">This study aimed to determine the influence of critical thinking skills on misconceptions using a five-tier instrument in mixed-method research. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. The data collection instrument used a critical thinking skills questionnaire, a misconception test of electric field material, and interviews. Data collection begins with quantitative data, providing a misconception test sheet and a critical thinking skills questionnaire. After that, the researcher took qualitative data in the form of interviews to strengthen data that had been obtained previously. Then from the results of the regression coefficients, there is an influence of critical thinking skills on misconceptions. The descriptive results of critical thinking skills data show that the mean of critical thinking skills is 68.50, which means that students' critical thinking skills are in a good category. Then from the results of the regression coefficients, there is an effect of critical thinking skills on a misconception, with the probability number obtained being significant. The limitations of this study are only to identify and see the impact.</p>

Identification of Students' and Teachers' Misconception on Energy in North Central Timor Regency

This study aims to identify the misconception in the students as well as the teachers on the same topic, namely Energy. This study used mixed-method research of sequential exploratory type with the research subjects of the teachers and the students in North Central Timor Regency with a sample size of 163 students and 12 physics teachers. The misconception data was obtained by giving a misconception test in the form of a multiple-choice question. There were 12 questions with 5 answer choices which were equipped with CRI (Certainty of Response Index). The results showed that the percentage of students' misconceptions for the whole question (12 items) was quite large, namely 43.66%, while students who had a good understanding of the concept were 38.80%. Nearly 18% of students did not understand the concept while 4.24% were just guessing and lucky (Lucky Guess) while the remaining 13.29% were the total students who did not understand the concept of the questions at all. Meanwhile, of the teachers, an average of 77.08% have mastered the concept of Energy. However, as many as 22.92% of the teachers had the misconception on several questions, namely (question number 5,6,7,8,9,10, and 12) with the most misconceptions on question number 7, 10, and 5. The conclusion obtained was that the misconception found in physics teachers was 22.92%. For the students, there was still a large portion of them who had misconceptions about the topic of Energy. This was caused by the lack of students' understanding of the topic of Energy

THE EFFECT OF EBA AIDED TEACHING ON STUDENTS’ HEAT-TEMPERATURE AND MELTING - DISSOLVING CONCEPTIONS

In this study, the question of if the computer aided instruction remediates the misconceptions of elementary fourth grade students about “heat-temperature” and “melting-dissolving” was aimed to be determined. The study was designed according to pre-test and post-test experimental group design. The population was fourth grade students attending a primary school in Nigde, Turkiye during 2014-15 education and instruction year. The sample was 96 students, who were attending three primary schools at Yesilgolcuk district in Nigde. The research took a total of 12 hours during four weeks. The researcher made use of the videos and animations of Morpha Campus and Okulistic electronic contents in Education Information Network (EBA) to teach experimental group students by computer aided instruction. Misconception Test was administered to both experimental and control group students. The data were analysed by t test and Crosstab. SPSS Statistic 22 software was used in these analyses. As a result, Morpha Campus and Okulistic e-contents in EBA eliminated more misconceptions of experimental group students. Moreover, outgoing misconceptions were also decreased with the use of EBA instruction.

Miskonsepsi Siswa SMP pada Konsep Segiempat Ditinjau dari Kemampuan Matematika serta Alternatif Untuk Mengatasinya

Mathematical ability is the ability required by students to solve a problem, students with high abilities will find it easy to solve problems because they have a good understanding of concepts, whereas students with low abilities will find it difficult to solve problems because they do not understand concepts correctly, which is what causes students to make conceptual errors. A condition when students experience a conceptual error is called a misconception. This research is a qualitative study that has the purpose to describe the misconceptions at each level, such as high mathematical ability, moderate mathematical ability, and low mathematical ability on quadrilateral material and alternatives to overcome them. The subjects in this study were 3 students who were selected using purposive sampling. In this study, students were given a mathematical ability test so that they could be grouped according to their level, then misconceptions were analyzed using a misconception test with the modified CRI method and continued with a diagnostic interview. The results showed that students with low mathematical abilities experienced more misconceptions than other abilities. The three subjects experienced misconceptions in determining the shapes which include rectangular shapes and the nature of rectangular. The causes of misconceptions are caused by pictures, students' abilities, and incomplete reasoning. The alternatives that can be done to overcome misconceptions are providing cognitive conflict, providing scaffolding, and re-explanation.

Öğretmen Adaylarının Kavram Yanılgılarının Üç Aşamalı Kavram Yanılgısı Testi ile Belirlenmesi

Bu çalışmanın amacı fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının kavram yanılgılarını, üç aşamalı kavram yanılgısı testi ile belirlemektir. Bu amaçla fiziksel ve kimyasal değişimler konusunda alan yazından belirlenen yaygın 10 tane kavram yanılgısı seçilmiş ve hangilerine aday öğretmenlerin sahip olduğunu araştırılmıştır. Çalışmaya orta büyüklükte bir üniversitenin fen bilgisi öğretmenliği programında okuyan 163 fen bilgisi öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Çalışmada veriler üç aşamalı bir kavram yanılgısı testi ile toplanmıştır. Üç aşamalı kavram yanılgısı testinin kullanılmasının amacı aday öğretmenlerin tahminlerinden kaynaklanan yanlış pozitif sonuçların önüne geçmek ve daha detaylı bir veri toplama süreci yürütmektir. Üç aşamalı kavram yanılgısı testinin birinci ve üçüncü bölümleri sorunun doğru cevabına göre objektif olarak sınıflandırılırken ikinci bölüm için geliştirilen dereceli puanlama anahtarına uygun şekilde betimsel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulgularına göre aday öğretmenlerin özellikle kimyasal değişimin net bir tanımını yapmada güçlük çektikleri söylenebilir. Aday öğretmenlerin alan yazında çok sık yer verilen bazı kavram yanılgılarına sahip oldukları belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca günlük hayata dair örneklerden hava yastığının şişmesi ve çaya limon sıkılması, fiziksel veya kimyasal değişim olarak sınıflandırılmada en çok hata yapılan örnekler olarak tespit edilmiştir.

Relative Effectiveness of Conceptual Change Texts with Concept Cartoons and 5E Learning Model with Simulation Activities on Pre-Service Teachers’ Conceptual Understanding of Waves

The purpose of this study was to investigate both the individual and relative effectiveness of two conceptual change interventions, gender and their interactions on preservice science teachers’ conceptual understanding and their misconceptions in mechanical waves. The interventions are conceptual change texts enriched with concept cartoons (CCTCC) and 5E learning model enriched with simulation activities (5ESA) respectively. Participants are 66 sophomores from two intact classes. A quasi-experimental design was used as a research methodology. One group studied the concept of mechanical waves with the CCTCC and the other studied it with the 5ESA. Students’ conceptual understanding levels and misconceptions were measured by a Four-Tier Mechanical Waves Misconception Test as pre and post-test. Preliminary analysis indicated that there was no significant difference among the intervention groups’ pre-conceptual understanding levels. Individual effects of the treatments from pre to post-tests were investigated by paired-sample t-tests and the main effects of the treatments, gender and their interactions on post-conceptual understanding levels were examined via two-way ANOVA. The results of t-tests showed that both treatments significantly affected learners’ conceptual understanding levels individually. ANOVA results yielded a significant treatment effect on behalf of the CCTCC, but the effects of the gender and gender*treatment interaction on students’ post-conceptual understanding levels were insignificant. Findings showed that the conceptual change approach accompanied by conceptual change text enriched with concept cartoons is likely to be more effective for increasing students’ conceptual understanding level and decreasing their misconceptions in mechanical waves.
