Protean Wit and Wisdom: Shaw's Uncollected Essays and Speeches

THESE TWO BOOKS are the third and fourth in a series of Shaw's miscellaneous writings published by Hill and Wang. Shaw on Theatre, edited by E. J. West, and How to Become a Musical Critic, edited by Dan H. Laurence, preceded them. Dan H. Laurence is preparing other volumes of Shaw's uncollected work. To emphasize that these collections are integral parts of Shaw's achievement, the publishers are making format, printing, and styling conform to those patterns used in the standard edition. Shaw's uncollected work states certain of his ideas succinctly and memorably. The books are especially important for Shaw's comments about the theater and his own plays and for the illumination which they cast upon the thought of Shavian drama.

Catullus X: A Rambling Commentary

This has always been one of my favourite poems, but if I were asked why, I should be hard put to it for an answer. I suppose it is because it seems to me the most perfect example of urbanitas in Latin poetry. Others will prefer Horace—those who prefer curiosa felicitas, and I admit at once there is nothing here to match such an exquisite felicity as ‘tange Chloen semel arrogantem’ (o si sic omnia!). But even in Horace such apparently effortless grace is rare; usually we find as much curiositas as felicitas: we marvel at the art, but I for one feel uneasily conscious of the tour de force. In other words, I feel the effects are calculated, whereas I always feel that Catullus dashed down his shorter poems, at least, in a few minutes—as we know Schubert did many of his songs: even Mozart composed in his head, though without the necessity of writing. Of the labor limae the outstanding examples are Horace and Beethoven. For Horace we have his own word: in the case of Beethoven no one would suspect to what an extent he carried it, if his note-books had not been preserved.However de gustibus non disputandum: it is the old controversy between Munro, who favoured Catullus and Lucretius, and Conington, who preferred Horace and Virgil. Early Drafts of the Garden of Cyrus

Although the original MSS of most of Sir Thomas Browne's published works have disappeared, a number of fragments and drafts of passages of The Garden of Cyrus have survived in his loose papers and notebooks, now in the British Museum and Bodleian. In editing Browne's miscellaneous writings a few years ago Keynes noted the resemblance of several fragments to portions of the printed essay, but aside from his brief annotations this material has remained unexplored.

Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Andrews Professor of Astronomy in the University of Dublin, and Royal Astronomer of Ireland; including Selections from his Poems, Correspondence, and Miscellaneous Writings

WE are glad to welcome the appearance of the first volume of this work, which has long been eagerly watched for by those interested in the career of the wonderful genius whose life is here narrated. To many readers this volume will afford material for no little surprise. Sir William Rowan Hamilton is known to fame as a mathematician. He is known by his memoirs on systems of rays; by his discovery of the great dynamical generalisation which is implied in his theory of the characteristic function; by his exquisitely beautiful prediction of the phenomena of conical refraction; and above all by his theory of quaternions—an imposing mass of profound thought which must be ranked with the very greatest mathematical achievements of any age or nation. Yet here we have a very portly volume of almost seven hundred pages, of which only an extremely small fraction is devoted to Hamilton's mathematical work. The progress of his papers on rays is here and there referred to, and there is an interesting historical chapter on conical refraction, but we may turn in vain to the index for a reference to quaternions, and we have only noticed the word occurring once or twice in the entire volume. But the surprise will disappear when the reader begins to make acquaintance with the volume. He will then see that Hamilton's mathematical labours were only one of the forms in which his most extraordinary genius was manifested. He will see that the early years of Hamilton's life afforded such copious materials to a biographer that the present volume only extends to the time when Hamilton had attained the age of twenty-seven, and that the crowning achievement of quaternions by which Hamilton is best known was the fruit of his riper years, and belongs to his subsequent career.
