Abstract Background Malnutrition is an important cause of morbidity and mortality of dialysis patients. It is important to estimate the individual's nutritional status, detect malnutrition, start nutritional counselling, prescribe an appropriate diet, protein enriched food, oral and parenteral nutritional supplements. In dialysis centre Novo mesto we use MIS score (malnutrition inflammation score) for assessment of nutritional status of dialysis patients every six or twelve months. Methods MIS score contains categories like patients’ related medical history, physical exam, laboratory parameters and body mass index. The sum of all MIS components ranges from 0 to 30 points. The score from 0 to 4 implies a good nutritional status. The result between ≥5 and ≤ 9 indicates the median nutritional risk and the need for the additional nutritional treatment by nephrologist. The score ≥ 10 points indicates the high nutritional risk and need for extra nutritional treatment at the clinical nutrition clinic. Results The first MIS score was carried out in December 2014 on 90 dialysis patients. The average MIS score was 3.87. MIS ≥ 5 had 19 (21.1%) patients. Additional nutritional treatment by the nephrologist (MIS ≥5 and ≤ 9) needed 11 patients (12.2%). Eight patients (8.9%) were (MIS ≥ 10) referred to the clinical nutrition clinic. Nine (47.3%) patients with ≥ 5 MIS did not accept the offered treatment and nutritional supplements. Assessment of the nutrition status with MIS score after one year (December 2015) included 77 dialysis patients. Seven of 19 malnourished patients from December 2014 (MIS ≥5) died; 5 of those did not accept the offered nutritional supplements. The average MIS score in December 2015 has improved by 0.31 and was 3.56. MIS ≥ 5 had 13 patients (16.9%). Additional nutritional treatment by the nephrologist (MIS ≥5 and ≤ 9) needed 8 patients (10.4%). Referred to the clinic for clinical nutrition (MIS ≥ 10) were 5 patients (6.5%). Conclusion MIS score is a satisfactory nutritional screening of dialysis patients. There is a great importance for early detection of malnutrition and an adequate nutritional support, therefore even more frequent screening would be reasonable. Nutritional counseling, multidisciplinary treatment and the inclusion of the patient's family and friends in nutrition is of key importance in improving the quality of life and to reduce morbidity and mortality.
