Mirror Writing: Learning, Transfer, and Implications for Internal Inverse Models

In a study of the effects of practicing mirror writing, the effects of transfer to the nonpracticed hand and to nonpracticed phrases were assessed in 185 students. Large transfer effects were observed. An interpretation of those effects is based on a suggestion that the learning led to the creation of a new internal inverse model (or a modification of a pre-existent model) mapping the space of task variables onto the space of internal variables.

Mirror Writing with Left Thalamic Hemorrhage

Three cases of mirror writing ( MW) with left thalamic hemorrhage were reported. All were right handed and the MW was limited to the left hand. All showed slight deficit in short term memory and in calculation. But none showed constructional difficulty or unilateral spatial neglect. Only one of them was considered as aphasic. MW was seen in voluntary writing and on dictation. Eye closure facilitated the tendency for MW. Also, it became more prominent when they had to write laterally from right to left than from left to right or in vertical direction. Automatic writing also facilitated the tendency while attention tended to suppress it. This tendency for MW seemed to fluctuate according to the level level of attention. As for the mechanism of MW in three cases, we discussed a possible role of the left thalamus. MW in the left hand can be seen in normal person under certain conditions. Therefore the MW seen in these cases may simply be a disclosure of the normal latent tendency. Lesions in the left thalamus may have contributed to the appearance of the MW by disturbing the attentional mechanism.

Mirror writing and hemiplegia.

A survey of 41 hemiplegics in a Rehabilitation Service showed only one case of frank mirror writing by a right-handed patient with right hemiplegia. This proportion is considerably lower than others reported in the literature. The one patient was also dyslexic, which supports Critchley's original hypothesis concerning the pathogenesis of mirror writing.

Mirror Writing in Normal Adults

This subject has a moderately extensive literature and examples have been recorded by various authors for some years. Most of the cases, however, have been the subjects of some pathological lesion, either congenital or acquired. Perhaps the earliest authentic case is the one originally described by Rosinius Lentilius in 1698, and quoted by Critchley, of a female, presumably young, epileptic sinistrad. The sex is not as important as the other factors, but it is a pity that there is no reference to the intellectual capacity. It is, if nothing else, a pointer to the usual type of case studied. In the adults, hemiplegics seem to have proved the most fruitful source for those collecting examples of this phenomenon, although a full list of causes is well known.
