Kim Gallon has described Black Digital Humanities as “a technology of recovery characterized by efforts to bring forth the full humanity of marginalized peoples through the use of digital platforms and tools” (Debates in the Digital Humanities 2016, ed. Matthew K. Gold and Lauren F. Klein [Minneapolis: Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2016], https://dhdebates.gc.cuny.edu/read/untitled/section/fa10e2e1-0c3d-4519-a958-d823aac989eb#ch04). Since 2012, the Colored Conventions Project (CCP) has served as a model of how this work can and should be done. [End Page 108] The initiative began modestly as an effort to collect and digitize extant records of antebellum conventions; it has grown to include the records of hundreds of meetings held all over the country and in Canada in which attendees responded to the immediate racial crises of the day. The CCP has helped establish the conventions as the nation’s first civil rights movement. The CCP derives its five core operating principles from the conventions, including attendees’ commitment to centering Black voices and to the collective enterprise of racial justice; but the project seeks to go further in recovering “Black women’s labor and leadership.” Black women had crucial voices in the movement, and their organizational and intellectual labor made the conventions possible and sustained them over the decades. But women were erased from the convention records the CCP is collecting, digitizing, and transcribing. So, in this first collection that has emerged from the digital recovery project, the authors show how the story of the conventions changes once this error is corrected. They point to the infinite possibilities for telling a fuller, richer history of nineteenth-century civil rights activism once women are returned to their proper place in the movement. No one knows how many Colored Conventions were convened between the first one, held in Philadelphia in 1830, and the last ones seventy years later, but author and project codirector P. Gabrielle Foreman indicates that they have identified six hundred meetings (25). The conventions were unevenly documented; some attendees published and circulated official minutes. But many meetings have been identified only by fragmentary notices in the papers. Added to this was the silencing of women’s work—some of it affected by male leaders and others by the women, who sought to protect themselves from white critique by keeping their names out of the records. Jewon Woo suggests that self-silencing may have been “Black women’s performative strategy” to shield themselves from charges of being “unconventional, and therefore socially ‘less desirable,’ women with ‘loud’ voices in public.” Her essay shows, however, that male convention leaders often did the silencing, like at an Ohio meeting when they struck the word Daughters from the minutes or ignored Jane P. Merritt’s demand for women attendees to be given equal voice (181, 179). The authors in this volume committed to writing women back into this history. Doing so required that they think creatively about how to engage the CCP archive. Often it meant going beyond it, entirely. Among the former, Kabria Baumgartner describes a process of “serial reading” of the Colored Convention minutes regarding a proposed coeducational American Industrial School; this approach allowed her to uncover “debates on gender and American higher education” that reveal women’s contributions to Black education, as teachers and school administrators (231). Eric Gardner highlights how on rare occasions when women “actually took the podium,” as did feminist poet Frances Ellen Watkins [End Page 109] Harper and author and teacher Edmondia Goodelle Highgate in Syracuse in 1864, male leaders downplayed their participation; Gardner flips the script by piecing together their likely remarks from their biographies and newspaper accounts of speeches they gave elsewhere. An Asemic Aesthetic Tom Conley (bio) ASEMIC: THE ART OF WRITING BY PETER SCHWENGER Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2019 What is it to draw, write, paint, even sculpt indecipherable figures—the force of which is conveyed not in meaning but in form? How do readers make "sense" of what they see? When an unsettling beauty of graphic signs overtakes what they signify, we find ourselves squarely in Peter Schwenger's world. It is one for which childhood memories have us recall that before we learned to read, we made sense of signs through sight and touch. We noted the texture, grain, and mass of printed books. Sniffing paper, sticking our fingers into the gutters, flipping pages: we looked for pictures to guide us. Before we learned their names, title pages, historiated initials, runner heads, tailpieces, and colophons were a sheer delight to behold. It was "writing" unencumbered by language, writing so attractive that we hold dear to ourselves those times when what script was "saying" mattered little. The authors and artists taken up in this monograph recapture those pleasures but with the added dimension that they bring with them an implicit political aesthetic. Blurb writers at the University of Minnesota Press call this elegantly written monograph "the first critical study of writing without language." They inform us that Asemic fills a gap in a field that has "exploded in popularity, with anthologies, large-scale anthologies, a large-scale art exhibition, and flourishing interest on sites like Tumblr, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram." Yet it almost goes without saying that any study of writing aimed not to mean is doubly bound. Peter Schwenger faces the conundrum of communicating clearly and distinctly about "writing that does not to communicate any message [End Page 210] other than its own nature as writing" (1). By "its own nature" is meant texture, design, aspect, and "feel" of script as drawing or disegno—in sum, a force of form and creative possibility. Much as Joyce wished to be free from the nightmare of history, Schwenger asks us to liberate ourselves from the task of "communicating." Conveying effects words cannot describe, instead of transcribing meaning or sending "messages" to improbable or unknown receivers, asemic writing calls attention to its shape, tactility, spatiality, and physical disposition. Patterned on legible (often alphabetical) forms, with beguiling resemblance to familiar sign systems, it stresses occlusion, difference, and enigma at the core of communication. Chapter 1 outlines what Schwenger means by asemic and, by implication, the force of asemia giving rise to its expression. He reminds us, first, that in going from kindergarten to college, millennials rarely know how write with pen and paper, much less master cursive script enough to copy a sentence from beginning to end. Educators in secondary schools often confirm the point, adding that, as if attesting to the French proverb about those who are misguided or witless when they cherchent midi à deux heures (look for noon at two p.m.), high school students encounter difficulty in reading analogue clocks and watches. The etiology of ignorance, Schwenger implies, might be rooted in the Classical Age and the Enlightenment, when readers were trained to look through writing and discern "meaning" beyond its physical form. This is contrary to the era of the incunabulum and the early printed book, a transitional moment when manuscript and book were coequal, when the shape of letters and words went with their meaning. In the later seventeenth century and beyond, "a mere secretary to an executive meaning" (5), writing was assumed to "represent" something other than itself. Ideation replaced materiality. Nominally holding to the enduring analogy of the furrows of a planted field resembling the lines of script in the frame of rubricated vellum, distribution and the spacing of letters, words, and punctuation marks was assumed to be linear. Schwenger subscribes to Vilem Flusser (in Does Writing Have a Future? [University of Minnesota Press, 2011]), who believes that in the age of cinema, television, and the computer screen, scansion of lines gives way to that of surfaces. Tourist accessibility of heritage spaces through the lens of spatial justice

ABSTRACT Guided by Soja's (2010. Seeking spatial justice. University of Minnesota Press) theory of spatial justice and Lefebvre's (1972. Le Droit à la Ville suivi de Espace et Politique. Éditions Anthropos) theory of spatial production, this study examined the accessibility of heritage spaces to tourists in Macao. The results of qualitative face-to-face interviews with ten key informants showed that there were discrepancies between how heritage spaces were represented in heritage policy and how heritage spaces were planned and managed. A simplified approach adopted in heritage preservation, due to the lack of expertise and in order to produce tourism products fast to appeal to tourists, had caused tourists to lose their appreciation of the authenticity of the city's heritage attractions. Besides, government resources were skewed toward heritage spaces located in the popular tourist sites, causing tourists to be not well informed of the existence of different heritage spaces along the historical corridor. Poor accessibility further affected all the heritage spaces. Tourists did navigate around the spatial injustice constraints by either not visiting the heritage sites that required intensive walking, or visiting only a few to obtain a general feeling of the city's heritage. This study contributed to the limited studies on spatial justice in heritage tourism and encouraged policies and practices to fairly distribute heritage spaces and resources.

Review of Media and the Affective Life of Slavery by Allison Paige (University of Minnesota Press)

In 'Media and the Affective Life of Slavery,' Allison Page interrogates how media culture from the 1960s to the present has mobilized the legacy of slavery for affective governance, or "the production and management of affect and emotion to align with governing rationalities" (6). Throughout the book, Page’s analysis succeeds in providing a rich mapping of the converging interests of state actors, media producers, educational organizations, and other stakeholders as they narrate their own desire to manage emotions in the wake of the civil rights movement and to maintain white supremacist order.

Economies and Circuits of Repair: On Reparative Justice Within/Beyond the State

Jovan Scott Lewis is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. He studies Black people’s lived experience of racial capitalism and underdevelopment in Jamaica and Tulsa, Oklahoma, through analyses of injury, violence, repair, debt, and reparations. He is the author of Scammer’s Yard: The Crime of Black Repair in Jamaica (University of Minnesota Press, 2020) and Violent Utopia: Dispossession and Black Restoration in Tulsa (Duke University Press, 2022). In 2021, he was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to California’s Reparations Task Force, the first state-level reparations commission in the country.
