In the intermediate ladle, wear of the high-alumina rammed lining occurs mainly as a result of the penetration into it from the working side of iron-manganese melt, its oxidation, a substantial reduction in the refractoriness of the working zone, and its fusion and erosion by metal. A particularly large quantity of ferrous oxide and manganous oxide is present in the film covering the working surface of the lining, as a result of which it possesses a low refractoriness and viscosity, and is easily removed by the metal. This is confirmed by its small thickness (0.2–0.3 mm).
