The Indonesian people's understanding of the geographic constellation of Indonesia as an archipelagic country as it is today is very important, because international recognition of the form of an archipelagic state for Indonesia requires a long struggle and history. Since the 3rd United Nations Convention on the Law of The Sea Conference in 1982, it has been agreed to regulate the law of the sea regime. One of the most important decisions for Indonesia is the recognition of the form of an archipelagic state with the arrangement of rights and obligations. t present Indonesia has minesweeper ships that are members of the Fleet Mine Unit Rl. The development of technology today is experiencing rapid development in all aspects of human life. One of them is in the field of marine technology. Unmanned ships are a topic that is widely discussed because they can help ship operations in conditions that are less friendly to humans and in certain conditions, for example in mine sweeping. Planning and selecting an unmanned vessel for minesweeper in order to reduce personnel and material losses is the best choice.

Experimental Study of Sandwich Strength Materials Made from Banana Fiber, as Advance Materials of the Unmanned Mine Sweeper (UMS) Hull

Mine countermeasures (MCM) is a sea operation that is very risky for personnel and material losses. The development of mine technology with the discovery of modern digital mines technology currently makes mine warfare strategies change, namely by relying on the unmanned minesweeper (UMS) as a mine detector, to mitigate the impacts and risks of sea mines on naval operations. UMS vessel size is 4.8m LoA, speed 2.57m/s and beam 2.24m. The main requirements for UMS are low magnetic, low vibration, and low hydrostatic. In this study, the author will make a sandwich material made from banana fibre as an Unmanned Mine Sweeper gastric material. The choice of banana fibre is because in addition to low magnetic, its availability is very abundant in Indonesia and the price is relatively cheaper than kevlar fibre. This study uses the technique of manufacturing vacuum assessed resin infusion (VARI). Then the strength test will be carried out with a tensile test, impact test and hardness test using the ASTM standard and compared with wood and fibre materials. The test results show that abaca banana fibre is capable of being used as an unmanned minesweeper hull material.

Initial Tracking Parameter Estimation of Magnetic Ship Based on PSO

We consider the problem of tracking a surface magnetic ship as it travels in a straight line path with the exertion of a magnetometer located at the seabed. Note that the initial filter parameters are prior information and the tracking performance depends on the initial filter parameters, and traditional estimation of initial filter parameters is to apply the filter bank algorithm, but there are several obvious defects in this method. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to estimate initial parameters of the filter, and the model of uniformly magnetized ellipsoid is adopted to fit the magnetic field of the ship. The simulation results show that, under the condition of no prior information, the estimated ship parameters based on the observation of the single-observer are invalid, whereas the estimated ship parameters based on the observation of the double-observer are valid. Further, the estimated results of real-world recorded magnetic signals show that the ship parameters estimated by PSO based on the double-observer are also valid, as the estimated parameters are used as the initial parameters of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), and a ship can be tracked effectively by the UKF filter. Moreover, the estimated half focal length can be used as a feature to distinguish noise environment, ships with different sizes, and mine sweepers.

Simulations and Measurements of Eddy Current Magnetic Signatures

Abstract Eddy current magnetic signature is, together with magnetization of ferromagnetic hull, mechanisms and devices on board, corrosion related and stray field sources one of the main sources of ship’s magnetic signature. Due to roll, pitch and yaw of the ship in external magnetic field, eddy currents are induced in conducting materials on board ship, mainly in conducting hull. Flow of those currents is a source of magnetic field around a ship. Principal eddy current component is related to roll movement as it depends on rate of change of external field which is the highest for roll. Induced currents have both in-phase and quadrature components. Magnitude of the eddy current magnetic field can have significant effect on total magnetic field signature after degaussing for ships such as mine sweepers and mine hunters. Paper presents calculations and simulations as well as measurements of model and physical scale model made of low magnetic steel performed in Maritime Technology Center. Contribution of eddy current magnetic field in total field in low roll frequencies has been estimated.

Pioneers in side scan sonar: Julius Hageman and the shadowgraph

The concept of the side scan sonar was developed during the early 1950s at the U.S. Navy Mine Defense Laboratory, Panama City Florida—now known as the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division. In technical reports and laboratory notebooks, Dr. Julius Hageman, a German scientist who relocated to the Laboratory after World War II and worked there until his death in 1964, outlined the proposed “short-range high-definition mine location sonar” that would eventually become the C-MK-1 mine classification sonar system, more commonly known as “Shadowgraph.” Hageman’s patent for the concept (US Patent 4,197,591) was first disclosed in 1958, but remained classified until finally issued in 1980. The Shadowgraph was contracted by the U.S. Navy in 1957 and towed primarily from Oceangoing Mine Sweepers. It was operated as an undersea search and survey tool for more than 25 years before decommissioning in 1991. The Shadowgraph was a 1.5 MHz dual-sided side scan sonar, with range of 100 feet, and imaging resolution of approximately 3 in. square at a range of 75 feet. During its service life, it located numerous lost objects and aircraft on the sea floor and to this day has influenced the development of commercial and military sonars.

A method for selection of parameters of ship propulsion system fitted with compromise screw propeller This paper concerns an algorithmic method for preliminary selection of parameters of ship propulsion system fitted with fixed screw propeller in the case when the ship's operation is associated with significant changes of waterway depth and width, hull resistance of the ship and its service speed. Mathematical model arguments of the considered design problem are main ship design parameters identified in the preliminary design stage. Structure of the formulated model complies with formal requirements for continuous- discrete mathematical optimization problems. The presented examples of application of the method concern an inland waterways ship fitted with compromise screw propeller optimized in the sense of minimization of fuel consumption for passing a given route distance within a given time. The elaborated method may be especially useful in designing such ships as: coasters, inland waterways ships, tugs, pushers, trawlers, mine sweepers, icebreakers etc.

Finite element modeling of the powder-in- tube process for manufacture of BSCCO-2212 superconducting wires

High-temperature superconductors have recently attracted a great deal of attention owing to their potential use in a variety of applications including power generators, superconducting magnets for mine sweepers or ship propulsion motors, and magnetic levitation transportation systems. The powder-in-tube (PIT) process has emerged as one of the most promising and economically feasible techniques to produce long lengths high-Tc oxide based superconducting wires. The PIT method involves multi-pass wire drawing followed by rolling and heat treatment. This work focuses on the development of finite element models to simulate the PIT drawing process for fabrication of silver sheathed Bi-2212 superconducting wires. The numerical models were used to predict the density of the oxide powder, the wire drawing forces, and the silver-oxide ratio during drawing. A cap-type pressure dependent constitutive equation was implemented in the model to simulate the powder behavior. The model incorporated experimentally obtained material data for the silver and powder. Data from wire drawing experiments were used to verify model predictions.

Applications of Superconductivity to Very Shallow Water Mine Sweeping

Recent experiences in the Persian Gulf have clearly demonstrated the need for improved mine sweeping, or mine counter-measures (MCM), to support amphibious operations. Characteristics of MCM systems currently used to counter magnetic influence mines restrict sweep rates, limit the ability to accurately simulate a ship's magnetic signature, and require a minimum water depth. Advances in superconducting technology over the last twenty years have significantly increased the feasibility of superconducting mine countermeasures (SCMCM) for magnetic influence mines. An SCMCM system would be small, light, and simple compared to currently deployed MCM systems. Superconducting magnets could be fabricated in steady state configurations or configurations that would significantly improve the ability to simulate non-symmetric, time-varying magnetic signatures of ships. SCMCM systems could be deployed from either surface or airborne platforms. An airborne system would protect the magnet from blast damage, permit the highest sweep rates, and allow unrestricted sweeping over entire amphibious objective areas, including the surf. A light weight SCMCM system would permit use of additional airborne platforms which may include remotely piloted airborne vehicles. Remotely piloted surface or airborne vehicles would totally eliminate risks to personnel. An SCMCM system could be demonstrated immediately utilizing existing technology and may offer significant advantages over existing MCM systems used to counter magnetic influence mines in very shallow water.

Experimental Reserch on the Wooden Hull Structure

This series of experiments, requested by the Maritime Board of Self-Defense Force and subsidized by the Ministry of Transportations, was executed, in order to obtain some useful data for designing the wood built hull of such high speed boats as patrol boats, motor torpedo-boats, mine sweepers, etc.Having done the test upon the panel of double planked shell and the model experiments upon the strength of beams having various kinds of constructions as motor torpedo-boats, the authors were able to find several analytical conclusions as follows.(1) Not only the bending deflection but also the shear deformation are indispensable as regards the strength of the wooden hull structure.(2) The double diagonal method is the best way to construct the side shell.(3) The strength of the wooden hull structure is affected by the end fastening of each plank. (4) The phenomena of shear lag, owing to the weak shearing strength, are observed in the stress analysis of the deck plank.(5) The stress of longitudinal members fitted inside frames or beams is not so effective.(6) The panel of glued double diagonal plank in spite of its satisfactory rigidity and strength, has a fault to break suddenly.Finally, the authors insist that the further investigation should be necessary upon the mechanism of fixing nails, bolts and screws and the shear lag in the panel of wooden plank.

Why India Wants Her Own Shipping

MODERN wars have brought home to every maritime country the truth of experience that control over the seas is quite essential to the free flow of trade and the effective defense of coasts. With the geographical position of India in the East and its strategic importance, such control over the seas has become a question of life and death. It is necessary not only for stemming the tide of enemy aggression against India, but also for enabling the United Nations to reconquer the countries which the enemy has now occupied. India cannot, however, have such control over the seas unless she has a large and powerful navy maintained and equipped in a manner to meet all the complex requirements of modern war. It is, however, a paradox of British rule that India does not possess and is not allowed to possess any navy worth the name. A few sloops, a few patrol vessels, and a few mine sweepers do not constitute a modern navy.
