Finishing of the curved surface of die is generally an extremely time consuming process. However, the automatic polishing apparatus has not been developed yet. This paper deals with a new method and the apparatus to automatically polish the curved surfaces. The principle of this method is to control the tool axis to be normal to the work surface in reference to the coordinate on the revolution circle of the polishing tool, which rotates an its axis. Besides in order to maintain a positive contact between the tool and the work surface, the posture of the polishing tool is controlled in a polar coordinate system so that the posture of the tool can be controlled independent of the location. of the polishing tool. This apparatus can be mounted on an NC milling machine or machining center. According to the experimental results with this apparatus when polishing three-dimensional curved surface, the roughness of the surface polished was down to 0.2 μmRmax.
