Mapping a Continent

Abstract Historical. The first surveys in Australia, carried out expressly for the purpose of producing military maps, were commenced in 1908. This task was undertaken by militia officers of the Intelligence Corps. The maps produced were based on the cadastral or parish plans published by the Lands Departments of the various States. Contours and other topographical detail were added to the original plans, but as these were not based on an accurate framework the finished product was far from satisfactory.

Rectangular Co-ordinates and Gridded Maps

Abstract A suggestion was made in an article entitled “Rectangular Co-ordinates and Gridded Maps,” which appeared in the June issue of “The Australian Surveyor,” that the width of the zones, into which Australia has been divided for military mapping, should be reduced, so that the rectangular co-ordinates in each zone should not introduce serious errors into computed distances.

The Military Map: Elements of Modern Topography (French School of War)

IN this book the authors set out to discuss the topographical map which has been produced especially for military purposes, and to treat particularly of the French General Staff map on the scale of 1: 80,000. An introduction deals with the general principles on which a survey is carried out, while five chapters are devoted to the representation of detail and relief, and to some information relating to the French 1: 80,000 map. The Legions of the Euphrates Frontier

In a recently-published work of much learning and great interest, La Frontière de l'Euphrate de Pompée à la Conquète Arabe (Paris, Fontemoing, 1907), M. Victor Chapot has dealt at some length with the history of the eastern legions. But neither he, nor, so far as I can find, any other writer, has attempted to fix their camps with full regard to chronology, and many points have been left uncertain. Although there is little direct evidence—less than for any other part of the Roman Empire—it may be possible to construct with reasonable probability a more exact military map of the eastern frontier.

Scientific Work of the Survey of India 1

IF any apology were needed for the maintenance of the scientific work of the Indian survey it will be found in No. 9 of the series of professional papers of that department, which has been especially prepared for the use of the Survey Committee of 1905 by Lieut.—Colonel S. G. Burrard, R.E., F.R.S., the Superintendent of Trigonometrical Surveys in India. That committee was appointed for the purpose of examining into the existing system of the Indian Survey Department with the view of rendering it more efficient as a topographical institution, having regard to the increasing demand for more accurate military mapping in India, and the necessity for more perfect revision of those maps which are gradually falling out of date with the advance of public works developments. India is an unscientific country. The scientific members of the Anglo-Indian community would hardly fill a first-class carriage on any railway line, and they exist only as paid servants of the Government, living in constant fear of “reduction when any financial crisis occurs. They have to justify their existence from time to time, and Colonel Burrard is to be congratulated on the very, effective justification which he has given to the public for the maintenance of the scientific branches of his own department. It is all the more valuable for the reasons that the booklet which contains his opinions is written in clear and simple language, intelligible even to the most unscientific reader, and. that it appeals directly to a far wider circle of men of science than can be found in any one department. The various sections of the scientific work which Colonel Burrard superintends are principal triangulation, levelling, astronomical, pendulum, magnetic and tidal observations, and solar photography. He deals with them all in turn concisely, showing their relative interdependence and their practical utility.
