The Social and Financial Implications of Agricultural Farm Settlements in Nigeria

This paper reviews the potential role of agriculture in the Nigerian economy and also evaluates the agricultural sector's performance in order to put the subject in perspective and emphasize the need for reforms. The paper concludes that efforts made by successive governments in Nigeria to boost agriculture were futile. The authors explore the reasons for the failure of an agricultural settlement scheme in the defunct Western Region of Nigeria. Finally, a proposal is offered to renew with modifications the farm settlement scheme on a national scale to encourage agricultural production as well as arrest unemployment and the rural-urban migration in Nigeria.

The Nature and Scope of International Migration Data in Nigeria

Nigeria, the largest country in Western Africa, has been attracting migrants from neighboring countries for the past decade or so. Although most of the movement of African migrants has occurred outside the regulatory framework set up to control migration, it is important to know the main elements of the latter to understand the likely limitations of the data collection systems currently in operation. This note briefly reviews the legal basis for the control of migration in Nigeria and the scope of the ECOWAS Protocol on Freedom of Movement. It also focuses on the available sources of data on migration, discussing their nature and scope.

Stemming the tide of rural-urban migration in Nigeria: social versus economic considerations.

Ways of reducing the flow of rural-urban migration in Nigeria are explored. The authors suggest that too much emphasis has been placed on developing social amenities in rural areas. An alternative approach, based on the development of economic opportunities for rural youth, is suggested.

Is there a step-wise migration in Nigeria? A case study of the migrational histories of migrants in Lagos.

"The paper sets out to test whether or not the movement pattern of people in Nigeria is step-wise. It examines the spatial order in the country and the movement pattern of people. It then analyzes the survey data and tests for the validity of step-wise migration in the country. The findings show that step-wise migration cannot adequately describe all the patterns observed." The presence of large-scale circulatory migration between rural and urban areas is noted. Ways to decrease the pressure on Lagos by developing intermediate urban areas are considered.
