Recently, a novel approach to satisfy the nonlinearity compensation criteria by mid-span optical-phase-conjugation (OPC) was proposed and excellent transmission performance was achieved, there the OPC propagation symmetry was obtained through optimized dispersion management with inverse-dispersion fiber (IDF). In this work, the author numerically investigates the possibilities of using dispersion-compensating fiber (DCF) instead of IDF for construction of the link. Nonlinearity compensation effectiveness of the two links are compared with respected to the intrachannel four-wave mixing (IFWM) induced intensity fluctuation of the ‘1’ bits and the generation of the ghost pulse. It is found that, by launching different powers (or energy of a limited bits) into the spans before and after the OPC, nonlinearity mismatch between the spans of the DCF-managed link can be counterbalanced with significantly improved transmission performance. For a given input energy, there exists an optimum ratio of the energies into the spans before and after the OPC, at which optimum nonlinearity compensation can be achieved, and the compensation effectiveness is very close to that of the IDF-managed link. Further studies show that the optimum energy ratio increases with the input energy but is independent of the span number of the link.

K-Nearest Neighbor Detector for Enhancing Performance of Optical Phase Conjugation System in the Presence of Nonlinear Phase Noise

Nonlinear phase noise (known as Gordon–Mollenauer phase noise) results from power fluctuations arising from amplified spontaneous-emission noise of the inline amplifier which is converted into phase fluctuations due to the self-phase modulation effect. It may severely impair the phase of optical signal, and would further degrade the performance of the long-haul optical transmission systems. The case can be compensated partially by mid-span optical phase conjugation(OPC). In this paper, an effective k-nearest neighbor (KNN) detector have been introduced to further improve the performance of OPC system by mitigating non-Gaussian impairments caused by nonlinear phase noise. The effectiveness is investigated in a 112-Gb/s 16QAM optical phase conjugation system with 800-km dispersion-managed link and 1280-km dispersion-shifted-fiber link. The results show that the effective and optimal KNN detector can enhance the overall performance of OPC system, even the asymmetric system.

Fiber nonlinearity compensation of WDM-PDM 16-QAM signaling using multiple optical phase conjugations over a distributed Raman-amplified link

In this paper, multiple optical phase conjugation (OPC) devices were used along the optical link to improve the performance of an $$8\times 256$$ Gbps polarization-division multiplexing 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation signaling, producing total bit rate of 2.048 Tbps. A 50-GHz spaced, eight-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication system was considered using 912 km dispersion-unmanaged standard single-mode fiber link with backward distributed Raman pumps. The performance of a dual-pump highly nonlinear fiber-based OPC was investigated analytically using a set of eight nonlinear Schrodinger equations taking into account the effect of polarization. Simulation results were compared with the case of mid-span optical phase conjugation (MS-OPC) compensation scheme showing better performance in terms of achievable Q-factor, optimal signal launched power, and the total length of the transmission link. In 256 Gbps, single-channel scenario, a Q-factor improvement of 1.35 dB was achieved and the nonlinear threshold was increased by $$\sim $$ 4 dB compared to the case of MS-OPC. Moreover, using multiple OPC led to increase the length of the transmission link by 30.7% compared with the case of MS-OPC. In 2.048 Tbps WDM system, a maximum Q-factor of 9.27 dB over the same link was obtained showing an improvement of 0.62 dB over the MS-OPC case. The simulation results were compared with published analogous experimental data showing very good agreement.

The compensation effects of fiber nonlinearity in 112 Gb/s polarization division multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical systems by mid-span optical phase conjugation (OPC) based on four wave mixing (FWM) effect are studied. Comparisons of the compensation results between PDM coherent optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system and the single carrier (SC) PDM quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system are provided as well. The results demonstrate that nonlinear compensation effect with mid-span OPC in PDM CO-OFDM system is much more obvious than that in SC PDM QPSK system.

110 km transmission of 160 Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK signals by midspan polarization-insensitive optical phase conjugation in a Ti:PPLN waveguide

We demonstrate 160 Gbit/s return-to-zero (RZ) differential quarternary phase-shift keying (DQPSK) signal transmission over a 110 km single-mode fiber by taking advantage of mid-span optical phase conjugation (OPC). The technique is based on nonlinear wavelength conversion by cascaded second harmonic and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN waveguide. Error-free operation with a negligible optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty for the signal after the OPC transmission without and with polarization scrambling was achieved. The results also show the polarization insensitivity of the OPC system using a polarization diversity scheme.

Simultaneous dispersion and non-linearity compensation with mid-span optical phase conjugation and distributed Raman amplifier for a sub-carrier multiplexed optical transmission link

Optical phase conjugation (OPC) and distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) combination (OPC–DRA) is demonstrated as a potential enabling solution for simultaneous reduction of fiber non-linearities and dispersion compensation of a sub-carrier multiplexed (SCM) optical transmission link. The present work is focused on the use of OPC–DRA combination for system performance improvement in terms of composite second order distortion (CSO) and carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of the SCM link. The analysis further shows that, introduction of DRA with proper pumping scheme significantly reduce fiber non-linearity resulting in improvement of the system performance in terms of CNR, compared to the situation where only mid-way optical phase conjugation is used.

OC-192 RZ signal transmission over 100 km standard singlemode fibre using wavelength-shift-free optical phase conjugator

Mid-span optical phase conjugation, a way to achieve dispersion compensation in a transmission fibre, is used to transmit an OTDM signal over a standard singlemode fibre. The conjugation has simple configuration, but has a problem with wavelength shifting at the mid-point of the transmission line. A mid-span optical phase conjugation that is wavelength shift free was used to overcome this problem and demonstrated for the first time a transmission of an OC-192 return-to-zero signal over a 100 km standard singlemode fibre.

80 Gbit∕s OTDM signal transmission over 208 km standard fibre using midspan optical phase conjugation based on four-wave mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers

A record-length, 208 km standard singlemode fibre transmission of an 80 Gbit/s optical time division multiplexing signal using a return-to-zero modulation scheme has been experimentally demonstrated using a midspan optical phase conjugation based on four-wave mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Transmission of 2-ps optical pulses at 1550 nm over 40-km standard fiber using midspan optical phase conjugation in semiconductor optical amplifiers

We demonstrate transmission of 2-ps optical pulses at 1550 nm over 40 km of standard fiber by employing midspan optical phase conjugation in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The second-order group-velocity dispersion of the fiber is completely compensated and the third-order dispersion becomes a major transmission limitation. This experiment shows that the midspan optical phase conjugation system using SOAs is applicable to ultrahigh bit rates greater than 100 Gb/s.

Compensation for dispersion-induced nonlinear distortion in subcarrier systems using optical-phase conjugation

Compensation for nonlinear distortion due to fibre dispersion and fibre nonlinearity (Kerr effect) in subcarrier systems by using mid-span optical-phase conjugation is analysed. The results show that both harmonic and intermodulation distortions may be greatly reduced over long optical spans.

Optical Fiber Communication System Using Optical Phase Conjugation.

In a long-distance optical amplifier chain, the waveform distortion is induced both by the Kerr nonlinearity and the group-velocity dispersion of optical fibers. To cope with this problem, the optical communication system using mid-span optical phase conjugation has been proposed and experimented with. In this paper, after reviewing the methods for combating with such waveform distortion, we describe the principle of the system using optical phase conjugation. The proper design for the amplifier spacing and the dispersion value of transmission fibers is necessary to improve the distortion compensation efficiency. Some examples of system design are shown, and the feasibility of practical optical phase conjugators is briefly discussed.

What about Foundations of Physics

The problem of the phase noise generated by nonlinear effects and chromatic dispersion can limit the transmission distance and the bit rate for phase-shift-keying modulation formats. In this paper, the compensation of the nonlinear and linear effects by a midspan optical phase conjugation (OPC) is studied. First, we show the impacts of chromatic dispersion in an OD8PSK systems (Optical Differential 8-Level Phase-Shift Keying), then a long-haul differential 8-Level Phase-Shift Keying (OD8PSK) transmission simulation is studied in order to compare both the performance of the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and the midspan optical phase conjugation. OPC allow to obtain a best recovered of transmitted information especially when compared to a «conventional» transmission system; the latter uses dispersion compensating fiber (DCF). OPC performs better even if we increase the bit rate and the distance.
