Middlesex Polytechnic is the first polytechnic in the country to extend its normal academic year programme into the summer. Offering extensive academic work leading to degree credit in a range of subjects, the courses are open to those who just want a taste of higher education as well as to current students who want to gain extra credit. The five‐week summer school which runs from 25 July to 26 August is an extension of the prestigious Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), the largest course of its kind in the country. The summer school offers intensive academic work in the performing arts, literature, history, languages, social science or information technology. Course fees range from £50 to £130 for the full five weeks of tuition. Accommodation is available in halls on the Polytechnic's country park campus at Trent Park, North London, at £19.50 a week.

Achieving Health and Safety at Work: The Problems of Evaluating Management Effectiveness

A research team at the Middlesex Polytechnic recently carried out a small‐scale study on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the implementation by companies of certain new provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974. These provisions are contained in Section 2 of the Act and require employers, inter alia, to inform and train their employees in safety matters and to consult on these matters with work‐place safety representatives appointed in pursuance of the Act.

Part-time business studies degree graduates—Some background results

Abstract The decade of the 1970's saw a significant development in the provision of part-time business studies degree courses in the public sector of higher education so that by 1980 sixteen such courses were in operation. This paper is concerned with the background characteristics of the graduates of these courses. It reports the results of a questionnaire study of the 121 students who graduated from the first one (at Middlesex Polytechnic) between 1973 and 1979. Information is presented on the following: age at time of graduating, sex, domestic circumstances, occupational mobility, family background, graduates' perceptions of the contribution of their degrees in terms of both obtaining employment and job performance, relative degree classification and subsequent studies.

In‐Service Diploma Course Evaluation using Repertory Grids

AbstractKelly repertory grids (Kelly, 1955), and associated computer programs (Shaw, 1980) were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Post Experience Diploma in Literacy Development taught at Middlesex Polytechnic. Thirteen teachers participated in the study and they reported two major causes of change directly attributable to the Diploma. These were: (a) a greater knowledge, and (b) increased self‐awareness. The two causes of change were closely related to the stated aims and objectives of the Diploma and they instigated many positive outcomes related to: (i) the organisation and planning of the teaching of reading, (ii) the nature of communication and interaction with colleagues, and (iii) specific child centred benefits. Fewer negative outcomes were reported but they should provide the course tutors with a feedback to re‐direct their energies more profitably to overcome these problems when next teaching the Diploma. It is suggested that senior personnel in the schools provide conditions for the returning teacher which enable the potential benefits of gaining a Diploma to be maximised within the school.

HOW RELEVANT IS CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT? —A BUSINESS STUDIES EXPERIENCE

ABSTRACT The B.A. Business Studies Degree at the Middlesex Polytechnic introduced in 1974–75 the idea of continuous assessment (20%) in conjunction with the examination (80%) as a method of assessing the student performance. The analysis of the marks of continuous assessment and examinations for different subjects of the Degree is carried out over a period of four years 1974–75 to 1978–79. The results show that there is a significant positive correlation between continuous assessment and examination marks in all subjects and continuous assessment helps in improving the student grades. Students are more concerned about their grades than using continuous assessment as learning experience. The average performance of students is generally lower at level II than at level I.

The Interview in Selection for Social Work Education

SUMMARY This article reports the results of a study undertaken at Middlesex Polytechnic to evaluate the effectiveness of the interview in selection for social work education. In a two year period half the students were selected on the basis of their written applications alone. The other half were selected on the basis of their written applications and two interviews. There were no notable differences between the two groups with regard to age, degree class or social work experience. Nor were there any notable differences in their performance on the academic and fieldwork parts of the course. Thus, the interview was not a significant factor in selection. It did prove to be important in recruiting students to the course. The low wastage rate on degree and post-graduate social work courses, however, makes evaluation of any selection procedure problematic. In selecting students, colleges and universities which offer a professional education in social work use a range of individual and group interviews to arrive at admission decisions; indeed, the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work 'considers that normally an interview should be included as part of the selection procedures of a course which is seeking recognition'.1 In 1974 lecturers on the two year postgraduate diploma course in social work at Middlesex Polytechnic decided to evaluate their selection procedures with particular emphasis on the interview. A search of the British social work literature revealed that there were no publications on the subject although, when the present study was in progress, an article reporting on research at Birmingham University was published.2 Scrutiny of the North American literature was more fruitful for two reasons: several studies of selection procedures used on two year postgraduate courses had been published, and a marked similarity was found between the materials required of applicants in North America and the United Kingdom. Recent developments in analytical training

In recent years, relatively little has appeared in print about Skills Analysis Training (SAT). Although there have been passing references in training periodicals and references to some of the principles incorporated in analytical training there has been almost no discussion of the topic. In the current decade three books have been published on analytical skills training, but these are based on experience gained in the 1960's. Yet, as recently as 1973 a survey of the use of instructional techniques in industrial training carried out by Middlesex Polytechnic showed that SAT was more widely used in skills training than any other method.
