Experimental investigations on physico-mechanical properties of kaolinite clay soil stabilized at optimum silica fume content using clamshell ash and lime

This investigation examines the effect of clamshell ash (CSA) and lime additives on the physico-mechanical characteristics of kaolinite clay soil stabilized at the optimum silica fume content. Laboratory tests were performed to assess plasticity, shrink-swell characteristics, compaction characteristics, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), shear strength characteristics, mineralogical and morphological microstructure characteristics of stabilized soil specimens. The kaolinite clay soil was stabilized at its optimum silica fume content (6%) to produce the highest strength and was altered with three non-identical proportions of clamshell ash and lime (3%-9%). Cylindrical soil specimens, 76 mm in height and 38 mm in diameter, were moulded and treated for curing periods of 1, 7, 14, and 30 days to examine the strength of the altered soil. The findings revealed that, adding clamshell ash and lime significantly alters the plasticity, shrink-swell, maximum dry unit weights, and optimum moisture contents of the silica fume-stabilized soil. In terms of strength, the beneficial effects of CSA and lime additives were found to be more significant with more extended curing periods. Incremental increases in curing periods resulted in further enhancements in UCS, cohesion, and internal friction angle, indicating continued strength development over time. Microstructural analysis using field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction provided insights into the interparticle bonding mechanisms and microstructural changes induced by the addition of CSA and lime. The emergence of cementitious phases and pozzolanic responses between soil particles and stabilizers contributed to the densification and strengthening of the stabilized soil matrix. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the potential of clamshell ash and lime additives to enhance the engineering properties of kaolinite clay soil stabilized with silica fume. These results have implications for sustainable soil stabilization practices, offering a promising approach to improve the performance of soils for various engineering applications, including construction and geotechnical projects.

Deep learning with diffusion MRI as in vivo microscope reveals sex-related differences in human white matter microstructure

Biological sex is a crucial variable in neuroscience studies where sex differences have been documented across cognitive functions and neuropsychiatric disorders. While gross statistical differences have been previously documented in macroscopic brain structure such as cortical thickness or region size, less is understood about sex-related cellular-level microstructural differences which could provide insight into brain health and disease. Studying these microstructural differences between men and women paves the way for understanding brain disorders and diseases that manifest differently in different sexes. Diffusion MRI is an important in vivo, non-invasive methodology that provides a window into brain tissue microstructure. Our study develops multiple end-to-end classification models that accurately estimates the sex of a subject using volumetric diffusion MRI data and uses these models to identify white matter regions that differ the most between men and women. 471 male and 560 female healthy subjects (age range, 22–37 years) from the Human Connectome Project are included. Fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity and mean kurtosis are used to capture brain tissue microstructure characteristics. Diffusion parametric maps are registered to a standard template to reduce bias that can arise from macroscopic anatomical differences like brain size and contour. This study employ three major model architectures: 2D convolutional neural networks, 3D convolutional neural networks and Vision Transformer (with self-supervised pretraining). Our results show that all 3 models achieve high sex classification performance (test AUC 0.92–0.98) across all diffusion metrics indicating definitive differences in white matter tissue microstructure between males and females. We further use complementary model architectures to inform about the pattern of detected microstructural differences and the influence of short-range versus long-range interactions. Occlusion analysis together with Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to determine which white matter regions contribute most to sex classification. The results indicate that sex-related differences manifest in both local features as well as global features / longer-distance interactions of tissue microstructure. Our highly consistent findings across models provides new insight supporting differences between male and female brain cellular-level tissue organization particularly in the central white matter.

Crystalline-Amorphous Heterophase PdMoCrW Tetrametallene: Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts for a Long-Term Zn-Air Battery.

Metallenes have received sustained attention owing to their unique microstructure characteristics and compelling catalytic applications, but the synthesis of multielement crystalline-amorphous metallenes remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a one-step wet chemical reduction method to synthesize composition-tunable crystalline-amorphous heterophase PdMoCrW tetrametallene. As-synthesized PdMoCrW tetrametallene is composed of approximately six to seven atomic layers and has flexible crimpiness, a crystalline-amorphous heterophase structure, and high-valence metal species. Time-dependent experiments show that PdMoCrW tetrametallene follows a three-step growth mechanism that includes nucleation, lateral growth, and atom diffusion, respectively. The novel ultrathin structure, optimized Pd electronic structure, and hydrophilic surface together greatly promote the activity and stability of PdMoCrW tetrametallene in the alkaline oxygen reduction reaction. Pd75.9Mo9.4Cr8.9W5.8/C exhibits excellent mass and specific activities of 2.81 A mgPd-1 and 4.05 mA cm-2, which are 20.07/14.46 and 23.42/16.20 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C and Pd/C, respectively. Furthermore, a Zn-air battery assembled using Pd75.9Mo9.4Cr8.9W5.8/C as a cathode catalyst achieves a peak power density of 156 mW cm-2 and an ultralong durability of 329 h. This study reports an effective strategy for constructing crystalline-amorphous quaternary metallenes to advance non-Pt electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance and for a Zn-air battery.

The Effect of the Microstructure and Viscosity of Modified Bitumen on the Strength of Asphalt Concrete

The purpose of these studies was to establish the influence of the microstructural and rheological characteristics of modified bitumen compositions on the strength indicators of asphalt concrete. The effect of additives concentration on the rheological characteristics and microstructure of binary “bitumen–surfactant”, “bitumen-AG-4I”, and ternary “bitumen-AG-4I-AG-4I” systems has been studied. To assess the effect of bitumen dispersion on the physical and mechanical characteristics of modified asphalt concrete samples, the compressive strength value was determined. The following chemicals have been used as additives: the original product AS-1, industrial additive AMDOR-10, and used sealant AG-4I, a product based on polyisobutylene and petroleum oils. At an increased content of AG-4I (C ≥ 1.0 g/dm3) in ternary systems, the contribution of the emerging intermolecular polyisobutylene network to the development of structuring processes increases while the viscous effect of the surfactant AS-1 decreases. It has been established that the minimum size of bee-like bitumen structures (1.66 µm) is recorded with the joint presence of additives in the bitumen, AS-1 at a level of 1.0 g/dm3 and AG-4I at a level of 1.0 g/dm3. Under the same concentration regimes of the ternary bitumen composition, the maximum increase in compressive strength RD was achieved with the smallest size of bee-like structures of modified bitumen.

Effect of annealing process on microstructure, residual stress, and fatigue behaviour of AISI 2205 duplex stainless steel

ABSTRACT This study investigated the microstructure, residual stress, and fatigue behavior of duplex stainless steels that have been annealed with different annealing processes. A cold-rolled AISI 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) sample was annealed in three ways for this purpose. In modes 1 and 2, samples were annealed at 500°C for 6 and 8 hours, respectively. The sample was annealed for 6 hours at 950°C for mode 3.The Optical Microscopy (OM) technique was used to determine the crystallographic texture and microstructural characteristics. An X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to determine the residual stresses in austenite and ferrite phases on pre- and post-heat-treated samples. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique was utilized to assess fatigue cracks. The results showed that the texture microstructure of the specimens using mode 1 and 2 were remained; the grain had a smaller fragmentation. The elongation grains of the specimen after mode 3 were smaller, relatively spheroidal, and more homogeneous. There was a reduction in residual stress after mode 3 annealing process. The fatigue strength of the specimens that under applied this process was 11.1% higher than that of specimens in the as-received state.

Improved Ability to Resist Corrosion of Selective-Laser-Melted Stainless Steel Based on Microstructure and Passivation Film Characteristics

The local corrosion resistance of forging and selective laser melting (SLM) 304 steels was explored by intergranular corrosion analysis, double-loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation, dynamic polarization experimentation, structural analysis, and passivation film characteristics analysis. The ability to resist sensitization of SLM 304 steel is greater than that of forging 304 steel at a temperature of 650 °C for 9 h. Moreover, the pit corrosion resistance of forging and SLM 304 steels is weakened by sensitization, while the pit corrosion resistance of SLM 304 steel is much greater than that of forging steel. Therefore, SLM technology can improve the ability to resist sensitization and pit corrosion of 304 steel. Analysis showed that the ability to resist corrosion of the passivation film of SLM 304 steel is greater than that of forging steel. In addition, corrosion pits are easier to generate at the interface of forging steel and SLM 304 steel. The grain boundary corrosion of SLM 304 steel intensified while the corrosion of the melt pool boundaries weakened after the sensitization treatment, resulting in a decrease in pit corrosion resistance. The coupling effect of these different structures and passivation films decides the pit and sensitization resistance of forging and SLM 304 steels. Clarifying the corrosion mechanism of forging and SLM steels is of great significance for scientific research and the widespread use of SLM technology.

Effect of direct aging heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Laser Powder Bed Fused Maraging steel 300 grade alloy

Abstract This paper investigates the effects of a 6-hour direct aging heat treatment at 490°C on the mechanical, tribological, and microstructure characteristics of laser powder bed fused maraging 300 steels, which is produced at various laser energy densities. After direct aging heat treatment, the grain boundaries become irregular and vague due to the residual stress releasing, squeezing of precipitates into the grain boundaries, and phase transformations. The XRD analysis reveals the reverted austenite (γ') phase forms during age treatment due to the inevitable reversion of metastable martensite to the stable reverted γ' phase. The heat-treated samples microhardness rises with rising the Laser Energy Density (LED) from 61.33 to 92.10 J/mm3 due to a decrease in the reversed austenite phase and a further rise in LED decreases the microhardness due to a rise in the reversed austenite phase. The heat-treated sample produced at LED of 92.10 J/mm3 shows maximum yield, ultimate tensile strengths, and minimum elongation percentage due to its high microhardness, and the fractography results show the failure mode as a mixed brittle and ductile fracture. The wear rate of the heat-treated additively manufactured maraging 300 steel decreases as the LED increases from 61.41 to 92.1 J/mm3 and a further rise in LED increases the wear rate. The wear rate rises with a rise in sliding velocity from 1.5-3.5 m/s. The dominant wear mechanism was observed as abrasion with small grooves and saplings.

Enhancing Cr (VI) Adsorption of Chestnut Shell Biochar through H3PO4 Activation and Nickel Doping

A high-efficiency nickel-doped porous biochar (PCNi3) has been successfully synthesized from chestnut shell waste via a two-step chemical activation treatment with H3PO4. The influences of microstructure, surface morphology, elemental composition, surface functional groups, specific surface area, porosity, pore-size distribution, and chemical properties of the surface state on the removal of Cr (VI) from water were thoroughly investigated by using XRD, FESEM, FTIR, Raman, BET, and XPS testing methods, N2 adsorption, and XPS testing techniques respectively. The results indicate that the treatment of H3PO4 activation and nickel doping can effectively improve microstructure characteristics, thus promoting Cr (VI) adsorption capacity. The effects of initial solution pH, solution concentration, time, and temperature on remediation are revealed. The Cr (VI) uptake experiments imply that the adsorption curves of PCNi3 fit well with the Freundlich model, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the Elovich model. The adsorption process of PCNi3 can be regarded as a spontaneous endothermic reaction limited by diffusion among particles and porosity. The adsorption mechanisms of PCNi3 are ion exchange, complexation, electrostatic adsorption, and coprecipitation with the assistance of surface active sites, porosity, Ni0 particles, and Ni7P3. With these advantages, PCNi3 reveals an extraordinary Cr (VI) removal capacity and a strong ability to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III).

Comparative study of the reptilian cornea's microstructure

BackgroundThe cornea of various vertebrate is considered a major part in the glop, which acts as a powerful lens, providing a sharp retinal image, and meantime acts as an excellent defensor for other corneal layers.ResultsThe four reptilian families [Scincidae (Chalcides ocellatus); Chamaeleontidae (Chameleon chameleon); Cheloniidae (Chelonia mydas) and Testudiniae (Testudo kleinmanni)] investigated in the current study were gathered across Egypt. After being taken out of the orbit, the cornea under inquiry was ready for light, specific stain and scanning electron microscopy. The epithelium, stroma, and endothelium are the three corneal layers that are common to all four species of reptiles. All other species lack Bowmen's and Descemet's membranes, with the exception of C. ocellatus and T. kleinmanni. The latter layers of Chalcides ocellatus display a strong affinity for Periodic Acid Schiff stain. Epithelial cells with a variety of forms, from hexagonal to atypical polygonal cells, cover the outer corneal surface. These epithelial cells are coated in short microplicae, microvilli, and microholes of varied diameters. There are a few blebs scattered around their surface.ConclusionThe current study concluded that various habitats have various significant effects on the cornea's microstructure characteristics and its physiological trends to accommodate different environmental surroundings.

Nanoindentation creep mechanism of gradient ultrafine lamellar γ+Ni5Zr eutectic using electromagnetic levitation coupled with fall casting

A quaternary Ni50Fe20Cr20Zr10 eutectic alloy was designed based on the Ni–Fe–Cr alloy, and the gradient ultrafine lamellar γ+Ni5Zr eutectic was achieved by means of electromagnetic levitation coupled with fall casting (EML-FC). The temperature field, the process of interface migration, microstructural characteristics and the nanoindentation creep property of the alloy were systematically analyzed. During the rapid solidification, since the conical surface served as the main heat dissipation channel, the solid-liquid interface moved from the conical surface towards the top of the cone axis. The gradual decrease in cooling rate from 105 to 103 K s−1 along this direction led to the formation of the gradient ultrafine lamellar γ + Ni5Zr eutectic with the size from 59 ± 12 to 140 ± 36 nm. The nanoindentation creep behavior and mechanism were analyzed by estimating the strain rate sensitivity and activation volume. As the interlamellar spacing of the eutectic decreased, the nanohardness and creep resistance of the alloy gradually increased owing to an increase in grain boundary density and the enhancement of coupling effect between dislocation and grain boundary. In addition, the creep behavior of alloy was sensitive to the loading rate. Increasing the loading rate led to an increase in strain rate sensitivity from 7.69 × 10−3 to 18.89 × 10−3 and a decrease in activation volume from 29 to 12 b3. This special eutectic structure and its improved nanohardness and creep resistance properties offered a potential opportunity to explore a new generation of alloys for the hot-end components of 972 K ultra-supercritical fossil-fired power plants.

Initial Characteristics of Alkali–Silica Reaction Products in Mortar Containing Low-Purity Calcined Clay

An alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical process that leads to the formation of an expansive gel, potentially causing durability issues in concrete structures. This article investigates the properties and behaviour of ASR products in mortar with the addition of low-purity calcined clay as an additional material. This study includes an evaluation of the expansion and microstructural characteristics of the mortar, as well as an analysis of the formation and behaviour of ASR products with different contents of calcined clay. Expansion tests of the mortar beam specimens were conducted according to ASTM C1567, and a detailed microscopic analysis of the reaction products was performed. Additionally, their mechanical properties were determined using nanoindentation. This study reveals that with an increasing calcined clay content, the amount of the crystalline form of the ASR gel decreases, while the nanohardness increases. The Young’s modulus of the amorphous ASR products ranged from 5 to 12 GPa, while the nanohardness ranged from 0.41 to 0.67 GPa. The obtained results contribute to a better understanding of how the incorporation of low-purity calcined clay influences the ASR in mortar, providing valuable insights into developing sustainable and durable building materials for the construction industry.

The Influence and Mechanism Analysis of the Longitudinal Magnetic Field on the Microstructure Evolution and Properties of AZ40 Welds

This paper studied the effect of the longitudinal magnetic field (LMF) on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of AZ40 argon tungsten arc welding joints. Magnetic field-assisted argon tungsten arc welding technology was used to achieve butt welding of an AZ40 Mg alloy sheet with a thickness of 1.5 mm. The microstructure of the Mg alloy weld was studied by using metallographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical performance of the Mg alloy weld was evaluated by using a hardness tester and universal tensile machine. The experimental results revealed that the average crystallite dimension of the weld zone of the Mg alloy joint reached 43 μm without an LMF. By introducing LMF-assisted technology, the weld structure was significantly refined and the average crystallite dimension of the weld seam was reduced by 39.5% to 26 μm with a coil current of 1.2 A. For the joint without magnetic field assistance, the optimum tensile strength of the AZ40 weldment was 225 MPa under a welding current of 80 A, and fracture occurred in the center of joint welding seam. Under an LMF coil current of 1.2 A, the joint strength increased from the initial 225 MPa to 254 MPa, and fracture occurred at the weld edge with obvious plastic fracture characteristics. It can be confirmed that the LMF-assisted welding process effectively improved the microstructure characteristics of the weld seam and strengthened the microhardness and mechanical performance of the AZ40 joint.

Microstructure evolution and ductility improvement of additively manufactured biodegradable zinc–magnesium alloys via annealing

Zinc–magnesium (Zn–Mg) alloys, fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing techniques, have emerged as promising candidates for biomedical implants due to their biodegradation capability, superior mechanical strength, and excellent biocompatibility. However, LPBF-fabricated Zn–Mg alloys still face challenges related to extremely low ductility and limited exploration of degradation characteristics. In this study, the impact of Mg incorporation on the printability, degradation properties, microstructure, and mechanical properties of LPBF-fabricated Zn–Mg alloys was primarily investigated. Furthermore, we proposed a viable annealing post-processing route for the first time to tailor the microstructural characteristics of the fabricated Zn–Mg alloy and enhanced its limited ductility. The results demonstrated that by applying a laser power of 80 W and a scanning speed of 600 mm/s, the relative density of LPBF-fabricated Zn–Mg alloy reached 98.62%. Increasing the Mg amount from 1 to 5 wt% refined the grain size while promoting an increase in Mg2Zn11 and MgZn2 phases. Among these compositions, the Zn–1Mg alloy exhibited the greatest degradation rate at 0.126 mm/year. The annealing treatment facilitated the microstructure evolution of the Zn–1Mg alloy, resulting in equiaxed grains, increased average grain size, high-angle grain boundaries, and enrichment of Mg at grain boundaries. After annealing at 300°C for 0.5 h, the tensile strength of Zn– 1Mg alloy decreased from 254.92 to 170.93 MPa, while the elongation significantly increased by a factor of 14.3 from 0.55% to 8.43%. These findings provide valuable insights into an effective post-processing approach for tailoring the microstructure and resultant mechanical properties of LPBF-fabricated Zn and its alloys.

Effect of high-pressure treatment and germination on the functional, rheological, and microstructural characteristics of red quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) gels

This study investigates the effect of germination and high-pressure (HP) treatment on the functional and gelling behaviour of red quinoa (RQ) (Chenopodium quinoa). The grains were subjected to germination for 48 h followed by the application of four pressures (200, 300, 400 and 500 MPa) as well as their combinations to germinated quinoa (GQ) samples. The samples were ground, and the flour was analysed for functional, rheological, and microstructural attributes. Germination and HP treatment improved the functional and gelling properties of RQ samples significantly. The degradation of protein, fat, and starch-lipid complex of the flour led to an increase in the swelling capacity of flour. The treatments increased the oil absorption capacity from 50.02 ± 0.47 to 80.86 ± 0.88 % and emulsification capacity from 57.85 ± 0.71 to 64.17 ± 0.53 %. This increase is attributed to the dissociation and unfolding of polypeptides that expose the hydrophobic sites of amino acids. The decrease in least gelling capacity from 18 to 14% signified a decrease in the amount of flour required for the gelation. Rheometric and texture profile analysis demonstrated an improved gel strength. Moreover, the SEM micrographs showed an increased structure density and reduced porosity which further support the improved gel strength. The study would help to widen the scope of accommodating RQ flour as a gelling or thickening agent in the food industries.

Enhancing geopolymer binder reactivity and performance via mechanochemical activation: A comprehensive study of rheological, mechanical, and microstructural properties

In this study, mechanochemical activation was utilized to formulate an eco- and user-friendly geopolymeric binder. This method offers an alternative approach to address challenges inherent in conventional two-part geopolymers. The process involves milling solid-state raw materials with diverse compositions, followed by the addition of water solely to initiate the geopolymerization reaction. Comparative analyses were conducted using conventionally activated geopolymer (CAG) paste and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste. The study also investigates the effects of ground granulated blast furnace slag/fly ash (GGBFS/FA) ratios (50:50, 75:25, and 100:0) and sodium silicate/sodium hydroxide (SS/SH) ratios (0.5, 1.5, and 2.5) on the rheological, fresh, mechanical, and microstructure characteristics of mechanochemically activated geopolymer (MAG) paste. The experimental findings indicate that mechanochemical activation reduced rheological characteristics and setting time, accompanied by an 11% increase in strength compared to the conventional activation method. Additionally, increased GGBFS content positively influenced rheological characteristics and mechanical properties, whereas higher SS/SH ratios adversely impacted these aspects. Setting time was significantly reduced with higher GGBFS content but increased with higher SS/SH ratios. Microstructural analysis revealed the presence of additional unreactive particles in both conventionally activated geopolymer and MAG paste containing 50% GGBFS.

Experimental Study on Strength Enhancement and Porosity Variation of 3D-Printed Gypsum Rocks: Insights on Vacuum Infiltration Post-Processing

AbstractThree-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has shown great potential in rock mechanics and mining engineering due to its ability to create complex and customized objects with high precision and accuracy. At present, an emerging research focus is improving the mechanical properties of 3D-printed samples, which originally has low strength and stiffness, to match those of natural rocks. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of different post-treatments on the strength enhancement of 3D-printed gypsum samples. To achieve this goal, 3D-printed gypsum samples were subjected to different post-treatments including dipped infiltration treatment and vacuum infiltration treatment using different infiltrants: water, saltwater, ColorBond, and StrengthMax. Subsequently, each sample was subjected to ultrasonic wave velocity testing and uniaxial compression experiments to characterize their mechanical properties, CT scans to investigate their microstructural characteristics. Additionally, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) tests were conducted to explore the underlying reasons for changes in macroscopic strength. Finally, the physical characteristics and mechanical properties of untreated and post-processed 3D-printed gypsum samples were compared with natural rocks. The results showed that the strength of samples treated with water and saltwater was much lower than that of those treated with ColorBond and StrengthMax, while the porosity was the opposite. In water-treated and saltwater-treated samples, water or saltwater treatment can alter particle characteristics, but weak adhesive bonding and numerous pores result in low mechanical strength. Samples treated with Colorbond or StrengthMax exhibit improved strength due to effective gap filling and cohesive structure formation, with StrengthMax-treated samples showing higher strength despite having more pores than Colorbond-treated ones. Moreover, the physical and mechanical properties of these treated samples matched a wider range of natural rock types compared to the untreated samples.

Influence of intermetallic phase (TiFe) on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of as-cast and quenched Ti–Mo–Fe alloys

This study presents the phase analysis, microstructural characteristics, and mechanical property evaluation of the as-cast and quenched Ti–15Mo–xFe alloys with high iron content ranging from 4 to 12 weight percent. All the four alloys were produced in a vacuum-arc melting furnace. Heat treatment in the form of solution treatment was performed in a muffle furnace at a temperature of 1100 °C, with 1-h holding time and the samples were rapidly quenched in ice-brine. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) was used to analyses the phases present in each alloy whereas the optical microscope (OM) was employed to track the microstructural evolution and percentage porosity. The mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using a tensile test and compression test method while the micro-Vickers hardness measurements were conducted to evaluate hardness of the alloys. The XRD patterns of as-cast showed peaks belonging to the β and α″ phases and intermetallic B2 TiFe phases. The as quenched XRD peaks illustrated β phase only and Fe·Ti·O2 phases. The as-cast OM micrographs revealed equiaxed β grains, substructures, dendritic structure, and pores forming around the grain boundaries. The quenched OM showed only β equiaxed grains with pores throughout the grain boundaries. The tensile properties such as ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elastic modulus (E) of as-cast TMF0 were 264 MPa and 79 GPa respectively and these properties changed upon quenching to 411 MPa and 66 GPa respectively. The elastic modulus of TMF1 in as-cast condition was 74 GPa. The UTS and E of TMF1, TMF2, and TMF3 in as-cast and quenched conditions were not recorded due to the fragility of the samples that failed prior to yielding any useful data. The compressive strength in as-cast and in quenched condition decreased with an increase in Fe content. The micro-Vickers hardness in as-cast and quenched conditions showed a similar trend with hardness increasing slightly upon quenching for TMF0, TMF1, and TMF3 alloys but slightly decreased in the case of TMF2. The fracture surfaces of all the as-cast and quenched alloys were comprised of ductile and brittle fracture.

Computational Investigation of the Mechanical Response of a Bioinspired Nacre-like Nanocomposite under Three-Point Bending

Natural biological nanocomposites, like nacre, demonstrate extraordinary fracture toughness, surpassing their base materials, attributed to their intricate staggered hierarchical architectures integrating hard and soft phases. The enhancement of toughness in these composites is often linked to the crack-deflection mechanism. Leveraging the core design principles that enhance durability, resilience, and robustness in organic materials, this paper describes the use of computational modeling and simulation to perform a three-point bending test on a 3D staggered nanocomposite intentionally crafted to mimic the detailed microstructure of nacre. We adopted a previously proposed interfacial zone model that conceptualizes the “relatively soft” layer as an interface between the “hard” mineral tablets and the microstructure’s interlayer spaces to examine how the microstructure and interface characteristics affect the mechanical responses and failure mechanisms. By comparing the model’s predictions with experimental data on natural nacre, the simulations unveil the mechanisms of tablet separation through adjacent layer sliding and crack deflection across interfacial zones. This study offers a robust numerical method for investigating the fracture toughening mechanisms and damage evolution and contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplays within biomimetic materials.

Effects of liquefied gas temperature and negative pressure on the microstructural characteristics of oxide Mg2SiO4 using molecular dynamics simulation method

Our study focused on examining the behavior of oxide Mg2SiO4 under various liquefied gas temperatures, including 4.22 K (Helium), 77 K (Nitrogen), 83.88 K (Argon), 90 K (Oxygen), 194.3 K (Carbon), and 300 K (room temperature), while maintaining a pressure of 0 GPa. Additionally, we explored the effects of pressures ranging from 0 to −6 GPa at a temperature of 77 K using first principles molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings indicate significant variations in the system’s size, energy, and the lengths of Si-Si, Si-O, O-O, Si-Mg, Mg-O, and Mg-Mg bonds with decreasing temperature at 0 GPa and decreasing pressure at a temperature of 77 K. Moreover, substantial variations were observed in the average coordination number of bonds, the quantity of SiOx, MgOy structural units (where x = 4, 5 and y = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), and bond angles of Si-O-Si, and Mg-O-Mg under negative pressure while remaining relatively constant across liquefied gas temperatures. Furthermore, we successfully established a linear relationship between temperature, pressure, and the total energy of the system. These insights into the behavior of oxide Mg2SiO4 serve as valuable groundwork for future experimental investigations, particularly in leveraging the material’s potential applications in advanced technological fields.
