A microcomputer based automated specimen weighing and recording system

This paper will discuss a portable microcomputer based data acquisition system for toxicology research. The data acquisition system and the companion data base were designed and built by a team of individuals at Battelle, which consisted of Barry Brownstein, Jack Webb, Robert Weiner, and myself. The remainder of this paper will describe the factors which affected the design of the system, as well as details regarding the system's implementation. We will first examine the motivation for such a system.

A microcomputer-based data acquisition system with hardware capabilities to calculate a fast Fourier transform

The fast Fourier transform (FFT) has in recent years become an important tool to the engineer. There are a number of algorithms which calculate the FFT. One such algorithm is the Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm (radix-2) which lends itself rather easily to a combination software and hardware implementation. With a micro-computer as the controller of a data acquisition module and hardware which computes the butterfly associated with the FFT algorithm, the FFT can be calculated efficiently.

Software organization of a microcomputer-based data-acquisition system

Abstract Designing the hardware for a modular data-acquisition system is reasonably easy. The required inputs and outputs are analysed, suitable modules are selected and then assembled together with power supplies and control panels in standard cabinets. Software design is another matter, however, as requirements can vary greatly from system to system and from time to time in the same system. Various factors affect the software requirements: the number of inputs and outputs, the types of input, signal conditioning and processing required, alarm facilities, scan pattern, log and alarm display and printout facilities, legends and texts, and operator command and message facilities. This paper describes how the required software is provided by means of variable size index-linked data arrays. The specification of a particular system and a description of the hardware are given in so far as they facilitate the description of the software organization.

Cotton Gin Operational Efficiency Measurement Via a Microprocessor Controlled Data Acquisition Unit

ABSTRACT THIS paper describes a microcomputer-based data acquisition system used for monitoring analog and digital sensors in an operating cotton gin. The gathered data is processed at a central computing facility to provide management with operational efficiency information. A general system description of the sensor inputs, data acquisition unit, and data processing functions is presented. Sample results for a medium capacity cotton gin are demonstrated.

Microcomputer-Based Control and Data Collection for a Mass Spectrometer

A microcomputer-based data acquisition and control system for a mass spectrometer was designed and built. This system incorporates commercially available microcomputer logic modules interfaced to various input and output devices; these devices include an IBM-compatible magnetic tape transport. The system operates from programs stored in firmware (permanent software) and can be programmed via a Teletype for several days of unattended operation. This report describes only the electronics for the system.
