This study investigated the impact of Cr contamination on the functional profiling of bacterial and archaeal communities in a tropical soil. The contaminated soil contained ~300mgkg⁻¹ of Cr due to the long-term application of tannery sludge. The FAPROTAX database was used to assess the potential functional profiling of bacterial and archaeal communities based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny. The results showed a higher relative abundance of Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes. Additionally, an increased relative abundance of Bacillaceae and Paenibacillaceae was observed in Cr-contaminated soil. The functional profiling predicted eleven potential functions, with Cr contamination negatively affecting chemoheterotrophy, nitrification, ammonia oxidation, and nitrogen fixation. This study reveals that Cr contamination significantly impacts the functional profiling of soil bacterial and archaeal communities, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and mitigating Cr contamination to preserve soil function.
