Abstract In the region from X 4979.19 to X 5210.90, I 14 lines in the spectrum of Arcturus were previously unidentified. Forty-four of these lines may be attributed entirely to the A 5211 band of MgH, while 62 of these and other Arcturus lines may be considered blends of MgH, TiO, C2, and atomic lines. The more conspicuous features of the MgH spectrum appear less intense in the spectrum of Antares. Evidence for the presence of the X 5621 (o, i) and X 4844 (i, o) bands of MgH in Arcturus and Antares is not con- clusive. Using eye-estimates of the intensities of `2 supposedly unbiended lines in the Q~ and Q2 branches of the X 5211 band of MgH, the effective rotational temperature is found to be 3600° ± 500° K for Arcturus. The simultaneous occurrence of TiO and C2 lines in these spectra is briefly described Publication: The Astrophysical Journal Pub Date: September 1937 DOI: 10.1086/143852 Bibcode: 1937ApJ....86..109D full text sources ADS |
