Geodesy, strictly speaking, began in Mexico in 1899 with the measurement of the arc along the 98th meridian west of Greenwich. For this purpose there was created the Mexican Geodetic Commission, which collaborated with the United States and Canada in this international undertaking. The part of this arc which is in Mexican territory extends from Lanuyu, on the Pacific coast, to the Rio Bravo del Norte (Rio Grande), near the frontier town of Matamoros.
