Putting African Communitarian Values to the Test during a Pandemic

Abstract Some African scholars have challenged the idea that African societies are still communitarian largely due to urbanisation and cosmopolitanism. Using Ghana as a case study, this essay aims to address this protest by analysing the speeches of the president of Ghana and some of the attitudes and behaviours of Ghanaians during the lockdown days of the COVID 19 pandemic in Ghana to test African communitarian status. The essay deploys the ideological analysis method of rhetorical criticism to examine and analyse the speeches of the president of Ghana on updates to the enhanced responses to the COVID 19 pandemic and content analysis of newspapers and online news portals to analyse the attitudes and behaviours of Ghanaians during the lockdown days of the pandemic. It is observed that the speeches of the president and some of the attitudes of Ghanaians during the lockdown inherently lean toward and are consistent with African communitarianism rather than hard-core liberalism and collectivism.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie w praktyce jednej z metod krytyki retorycznej: metody motywu fantazjowania. Została ona zaprojektowana przede wszystkim z myślą o analizowaniu narracji tworzonych grupowo (w obrębie „wspólnot retorycznych”), w toku interakcji społecznych. Przedmiotem analizy są budowane w mediach społecznościowych narracje o „epidemii odry” na Mazowszu w listopadzie 2018 roku. Materiał zaczerpnięto głównie z grup w mediach społecznościowych, których twórcami i adresatami są mieszkańcy Pruszkowa, Grodziska, Brwinowa i okolicznych miejscowości. W narracjach tych wyodrębniono „motywy fantazjowania” i postarano się zrekonstruować różne „retoryczne wizje” (na przykład „tylko ciemnogród nie szczepi dzieci”, „szczepionka nie chroni przed zachorowaniem”, „odrę najlepiej jest po prostu przechorować”). Motywy i retoryczne wizje z dyskursu lokalnego porównano następnie z dyskursem na poziomie narodowym i globalnym. Wnioski dotyczą perswazyjnej skuteczności retorycznych wizji.

Rhetorical criticism as a method for examining cultural pressures on organizational form

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide a rationale and step‐by‐step description of how to use rhetorical criticism as a method for accounting for organizational isomorphism in organizational fields.Design/methodology/approachThe idea that rhetoric is an important form of organizational discourse has gained interest among organizational scholars in recent years. Institutional theorists, especially, have been willing to embrace the “rhetorical turn” in organization studies. These scholars recognize that rhetoric plays an important role in creating, maintaining, and disrupting organizational and institutional orders. This paper adds to this research agenda by suggesting that organizational isomorphism can be partly understood as a rhetorical phenomenon. A method of rhetorical criticism – a qualitative approach for analyzing the rhetorical dimensions of texts and practice – and its efficacy for institutional research is explicated. Using a popular television program about crime scene investigations (which has arguably produced a “CSI effect” that influences the criminal justice system as an organizational field) as a sustained example, steps are provided for conducting rhetorical criticism of popular culture texts in order to account for isomorphic trends in an organizational field.FindingsRhetorical analysis of cultural and organizational artifacts, including institutional work, can expose myths and ceremonies that guide practices effectively and problematically.Originality/valueThe potential value of the paper is in its function as a guide for (neo)institutional and organization scholars looking for innovative approaches to studying organizations from a cultural perspective.

The purpose of this article is to research the nature and the communicative functions of the traces of Psalm 34 in 1 Peter. This is done through an interdisciplinary method of rhetorical criticism. This method includes an analysis and interpretation with the focus on the author, the readers and the text. It appears that the communicative function of the traces of Psalm 34 in 1 Peter is to make the readers aware of that which they already accept. In this way the author can communicate his viewpoint effectively, because by reminding them of the things they already believe, he makes the readers more receptive to his arguments.

Rhetorical criticism and the hermeneutics of the New Testament

It is argued that rhetorical criticism is increasingly recognized as a method of interpretation of biblical literature. From the discussion in this article it becomes clear that there are different perspectives of rhetorical criticism just as there are different theories of rhetoric. It is argued that contemporary critics need to develop an interdisciplinary method of rhetorical criticism in order to answer questions about the potential effectiveness of a rhetorical act. It is concluded that the rhetorical critic needs a combination of "old" methods in order to answer new questions.

A Fantasy Theme Analysis of Peter Senge’s Learning Organization

When it was first articulated in The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge’s vision of the learning organization was one of a number of competing conceptions. This article examines what it was about Senge’s vision that enabled it to catch on and be assimilated so rapidly and pervasively into everyday business discourse. The method used in this study is fantasy theme analysis, a dramatistically based method of rhetorical criticism developed by Ernest Bormann that is rooted in symbolic convergence theory. The analysis reveals four interrelated fantasy themes that form the dramatic building blocks of the rhetorical vision of the learning organization. The article examines the organizational and rhetorical strategies that Senge has deployed to sustain widespread interest in his vision.
