Cooperative Containment Strategies to Pursue One Faster Evader with Collision Avoidance

On the surface of complex sea areas with obstacles, the encirclement mission against one hostile unmanned surface vehicle (USV) with high capability is usually extremely challenging. Especially when the evasion USV is endowed with a higher speed, the pursuit USVs are more likely to fail. In this work, the containment strategies by multiple low-speed pursuit USVs to capture one high-speed evasion USV considering collision avoidance are studied. On the basis of the conventional artificial potential field (APF) method, we first design a virtual target point to replace the actual evasion USV, which will help the pursuit USVs better implement the surrounding behavior. Thereafter, we reset the triggering conditions of the APF method to avoid the unnecessary obstacle avoidance actions. The proposed strategies can help the pursuit USVs better accomplish the containment strategies while bypassing the obstacles. Simulation experiments have verified the effectiveness of the designed cooperative containment strategies.

Seasonal Variations in Ochreous Precipitates and Drainage Waters in the Grantcharitsa Tungsten Deposit, Western Rhodopes, Bulgaria

Seasonal variations of drainage waters and ochreous products of their discharge from the closed abandoned old gallery at the Grantcharitsa scheelite deposit (Bulgaria) were studied by field and laboratory methods for the period 2019–2023. The drainage is generated under anoxic conditions and is inherently diluted (EC = 100–202 µS/cm) with S (6–12 mg/L), Si (6–22 mg/L), Na (6–10 mg/L), Fe (0.2–3.3 mg/L), and W (0.19–3.5 µg/L), at a pH 4.4–6.5 and temperature 7–11.5 °C, with dissolved oxygen DO (2.1–7.7 mg/L). The concentrations of Fe and W and the pH of the water are variable and reach their maximum values during the dry (autumn) season. It was found that such parameters as pH, Eh, DO, Fe and W content change dramatically at a distance of up to 3 m from the water outlet; the values of pH, DO and Eh are sharply increased with a simultaneous nearly 5–6-times reduction in iron and tungsten content. The decrease in the contents of these elements is associated with the precipitation of ochreous material consisting of nanoscale ferrihydrite with an intermediate structural ordering between 2-line and 6-line ferrihydrite (major phase), hematite, goethite, quartz, montmorillonite and magnetite. The formation of ferrihydrite occurs as a result of abiotic and biotic processes with the participation of iron-oxidizing bacteria. Besides Fe2O3 (55.5–64.0 wt.%), the ochreous sediment contains SiO2 (12.0–16.4 wt.%), SO3 (1.3–2.4 wt.%), Al2O3 (3.1–6.8 wt.%) and WO3 (0.07–0.11 wt.%). It has been shown that drainage waters and ochreous sediments do not inherently have a negative impact on the environment. The environmental problem arises with intense snowmelt and heavy rainfall, as a result of which the accumulated sediments are washed away and carried in the form of suspensions into the water systems. It is suggested that by providing atmospheric oxygen access to the closed gallery (via local boreholes), it is possible to stop the generation of iron-enriched drainage.

Simulation of Dendrite Remelting via the Phase-Field Method

The solidification of alloys is a key physical phenomenon in advanced material-processing techniques including, but not limited to, casting and welding. Mastering and controlling the solidification process and the way in which microstructure evolution occurs constitute the key to obtaining excellent material properties. The microstructure of a solidified liquid metal is dominated by dendrites. The growth process of these dendrites is extremely sensitive to temperature changes, and even a small change in temperature can significantly affect the growth rate of the dendrite tip. Dendrite remelting is inevitable when the temperature exceeds the critical threshold. In this study, a temperature-induced-dendrite remelting model was established, which was implemented through the coupling of the phase field method (PFM) and finite difference method (FDM). The transient evolution law of dendrite remelting was revealed by simulating dendritic growth and remelting processes. The phase field model showed that the lateral dendrites melt first, the main dendrites melt later, and the main dendrites only shrink but do not melt when the lateral dendrites have not completely melted or the root is not broken. The long lateral branches break into fragments, while the short lateral branches shrink back into the main dendrites. The main dendrites fracture and melt in multiple stages due to inhomogeneity.

Natural disasters have always existed as a natural phenomenon throughout the life of the earth. The occurrence of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, storms, etc. in most cases have destructive effects on human settlements and heavy casualties on their residents. It has destroyed the buildings and infrastructures of such areas and imposed unfortunate economic and social consequences on cities and countries. Despite many scientific advances, mankind is still not able to prevent and resist these natural events. Natural disaster management and sustainable development are considered an integrated issue today. Due to limited resources, real development will not be possible without integration with disaster reduction programs. Earthquakes as a natural phenomenon do not have adverse results by themselves. What makes this phenomenon a disaster is the lack of prevention and lack of preparation to deal with its consequences. Therefore, one of the most necessary measures is to apply "principles of crisis management". Crisis management measures can be summarized in three parts: 1. Prevention, 2. Response, and 3. Reconstruction. Therefore, the title is the most important discussion in the strategy of reducing the effects of earthquakes. In this research, we seek to find the best location for crisis management support bases in Malair City, which first identified the effective factors and criteria in the location of relief centers during a crisis. Then, the AHP model was used to determine the importance and value of each criterion and effective elements in the decision, and a questionnaire was designed and distributed among experts and specialists. In the next step, the weight of each of the decision criteria and elements was determined using the hierarchical analysis process method and Expert Choice software. Then, using the field method, figures of the studied area were updated and prepared. In the next step, all information layers were converted to raster in the geographic information system (GIS). Finally, using the Index overlay method, the layers were combined. Three locations were suggested as the best locations for crisis management support bases in Malayer City. Among them, two options, one in the eastern part of the city on Molvi Street, and the other in the southern part of the city on Motahari Street, have been proposed as the best options. In terms of accessibility, they are in a good position. An option, that has a lower score, is located in the southeastern part of the city on Sheikh Kilini Street.

Effect of Oriented External Electric Field in Altering Magnetic Exchange and Magnetic Anisotropy in Lanthanide-Radical Complexes.

Magnetic exchange coupling (J) is one of the important spin Hamiltonian parameters that control the magnetic characteristics of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). While numerous chemical methodologies have been proposed to modify ligands and control the J value, and magneto-structural correlations have been developed accordingly, altering this parameter through non-chemical means remains a challenging task. This study explores the impact of an Oriented-External Electric Field (OEEF) on over twenty lanthanide-radical complexes using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and ab initio Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) methods. Five complexes-[{(Me3Si)2N]2Gd(THF)}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)] (1), [Gd(Hbpz3)2(dtbsq)] (2), [Gd(hfac)3(IM-2py)] (3), [Gd(hfac)3(NITBzImH)] (4), and [Gd(hfac)3{2Py-NO}(H2O)] (5)-were selected for detailed analysis, revealing significant OEEF effects on magnetic exchange interactions and structural parameters. Various parameters such as bond distances, bond angles, and torsional angles were examined as a function of OEEF to establish guiding principles for molecule selection. In complexes 1, 2, and 3, OEEF influenced torsional angles and altered exchange interactions. Complex 4 demonstrated enhanced ferromagnetic coupling under OEEF, reaching a maximum J value of +5.3 cm-1. Complex 5 reveals switching the sign of JGd-rad exchange interaction from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic under OEEF, highlighting the potential of electric fields in designing materials with tuneable magnetic properties.

Multiscale study on the properties and crack propagation of 2D woven SiCf/SiC with pores using elastoplastic phase field

AbstractTo understand the effect of processing and prefabricated pores on 2D woven SiCf/SiC composites (2DW‐SiCf/SiC), their crack propagation and mechanical response under tension load at meso‐ and macro‐ scale are investigated by a promising elastoplastic phase field method (EPPFM). Of much interest, the computational results are well consistent with the available experimental results, verifying the reliability of EPPFM. A significant dependence on pores is observed in the relationship between the strength, Young's modulus, work of fracture of 2DW‐SiCf/SiC and porosity when pores exist solely in the matrix out of yarns, and both in the matrix and yarns, respectively. Moreover, the more dangerous processing pores at mesoscale near yarn are attributed to the inconsistent deformation of the yarn and matrix. Finally, the EPPFM is used for the effect of geometry size on the joint failure mode of 2DW‐SiCf/SiC plate with prefabricated open holes under pin‐loading. Of importance, the more safe bearing failure mode occurs in 2DW‐SiCf/SiC plate when edge distance‐to‐hole diameter ratio and width‐to‐hole diameter ratio are greater than 1.5 and 3, respectively.

Fabrication of Microstructured Hydrogels via Dehydration for On-Demand Applications.

Microstructured hydrogels show promising applications in various engineering fields from micromolds to anisotropic wetting surfaces and microfluidics. Although methods like molding by, e.g., casting as well as 3D printing are developed to fabricate microstructured hydrogels, developing fabrication methods with high controllability and low-cost is an on-going challenge. Here, a method is presented for creating microstructures through the dehydration of double network hydrogels. This method utilizes common acrylate monomers and a mask-assisted photopolymerization process, requiring no complex equipment or laborious chemical synthesis process. The shape and profile of microstructures can be easily controlled by varying the exposure time and the mask used during photopolymerization. By altering the monomer and the mask used for fabricating the second network hydrogel, both convex and concave microstructures can be produced. To showcase the utility of this method, the patterned hydrogel is utilized as a mold to fabricate a polydimethylsiloxane microlens array via soft lithography for imaging application. In addition, a patterned hydrogel surface exhibiting obvious anisotropic wetting properties and open microfluidic devices which can achieve fast directional superspreading within milliseconds are also fabricated to demonstrate the versatility of the method for different engineering fields.

Existence of slowly rotating bipolytropes with prolate cores

We report the existence of hydrostatic equilibrium states for a composite body made of two rigidly rotating, homogeneous layers bounded by spheroidal surfaces, where the core has a prolate shape. These new configurations require an oblate envelope that spins faster than the core. No solution with a prolate envelope is found. For some parameters, the prolate core can even be at rest. Numerical experiments based on the self-consistent field method support this result in the case of heterogeneous layers with polytropic equations of state. The possible cancellation of the first gravitational moment, $J_2$, is discussed.

Efficient path planning for autonomous vehicles based on RRT* with variable probability strategy and artificial potential field approach.

With the rapid development of autonomous driving technology, path planning has gained significant attention as it holds great potential for improving safety. The Rapidly-exploring Random Tree star(RRT*) algorithm has attracted much attention because of its good adaptability and expansibility. However, how solving problems in the RRT* algorithm such as slow convergence time, significant search range randomness, and unpredictability is a challenge. Therefore, an RRT* enhancement algorithm combining variable probability goal-bias strategy and artificial potential field(APF) method(Improved A-RRT*) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the variable probability goal-bias strategy is introduced in the sampling process to make random tree expand towards the target direction and improve the directional searchability of the random tree. Secondly, the potential field function in APF is improved to prevent falling into local optimum problems during path generation. Thirdly, improved APF is combined with RRT*, the target generates a gravitational field on random tree, and the obstacle generates a repulsive force on it, leading random tree to grow toward the target region. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with RRT* algorithm and its derivative algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has obvious optimizations in convergence speed and path quality.

Study of combined multiple exposure and reproductive / developmental toxicity of 2-ethylhexanoic acid by screening method

Introduction. According to the normative and methodological documents of the Russian Federation, chemicals introduced into economic activities are subject to mandatory toxicological assessment and hygienic regulation. To substantiate the value of the hygienic standard of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, the production of which is planned in the country, additional test on its reproductive toxicity was required. The aim of the research was to determine the no-observed adverse effect levels of the 2-ethylhexanoic acid for maternal and reproductive toxicities in combined multiple exposure and the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test (OECD 422). Materials and methods. The study was performed in accordance with the requirements of the OECD Test Guideline 422 «Combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test». Results. During the experiment no animal deaths or clinical symptoms of the toxic effect of 2-ethylhexanoic acid were observed at all tested doses (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg b.w.). The assessment of behavioural responses using the open field method showed no differences in animals from experimental and control group. Histological examination indicated the acid at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg b.w. to cause significant changes in bladder (increased sclerosis in the submucosa), lungs (increased proportion of emphysematous altered parenchyma), adrenal gland (increased cell alterations and lipomatous inclusions), thyroid gland (increased loci of interfollicular tissue) in males and females’ rats. The total weight of offspring in the experimental groups was found to be statistically dose-dependent reduced on days 4 and 13 after birth compared with the control. Limitations. The study had no limitations. Conclusion. 2-Ethylhexanoic acid has no effect on the reproductive function in experimental animals. Developmental toxicity, expressed in a decrease in the total weight of offspring, was observed at the level of general toxic effects and is not specific. NOAELs were established at the level of 250 mg/kg b.w. for general toxic effect, > 1000 mg/kg b.w. for reprotoxic effect.

Investigating the influence of geometric configurations and loading modes on mixed mode I/II fracture characteristics of rocks: Part I-Numerical simulation

The influence of geometric configurations and loading modes is a bottleneck that restricts the accurate determination of rock fracture parameters and the precise understanding of fracture mechanisms. Therefore, the phase field method is employed to analyze the influences of specimen geometry and loading modes on the dimensionless stress intensity factors, peak load, fracture toughness, and crack initiation angle during the rock mixed mode I/II fracture process. Three new configurations of specimens are proposed to test rock mixed mode I/II fracture. The research results indicate that as the prefabricated crack inclination angle increases, the peak load of three-point bending type specimen increases, while the peak load of diametric-compression type specimen decreases. Moreover, the influence of geometric configurations on the fracture parameters of three-point bending specimens is greater than that of diametric-compression disk specimens. The research findings of this work can provide basic supporting data for the establishment of mixed mode I/II fracture testing standards.

Phase Field Modeling of Hydraulic Fracturing with Length-Scale Insensitive Degradation Functions

A length-scale insensitive degradation function is applied to extend the cracks during hydraulic fracturing under stress boundary conditions in this study. The phase field method is an effective modeling technique that has great potential for use in hydraulic fracturing. Nonetheless, current hydraulic fracturing research is still concentrated on small scales. The phase field model employs a degradation function that is insensitive to length scale, allowing for the decoupling of the phase field length scale from the physical length scale. This facilitates the simulation of hydraulic fracturing crack extensions in larger structures with a consistent mesh density. The correctness of the phase field method is verified firstly by comparing with the experimental results, and the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are further verified through a series of numerical calculations.

A Novel Hydrogel Sponge for Three-Dimensional Cell Culture

Background/Objectives: Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture technologies allow us to overcome the constraints of two-dimensional methods in different fields like biochemistry and cell biology and in pharmaceutical in vitro tests. In this study, a novel 3D hydrogel sponge scaffold, composed of a crosslinked polyacrylic acid forming a porous matrix, has been developed and characterized. Methods: The scaffold was obtained via an innovative procedure involving thermal treatment followed by a salt-leaching step on a matrix-containing polymer along with a gas-forming agent. Based on experimental design for mixtures, a series of formulations were prepared to study the effect of the three components (polyacrylic acid, NaHCO3 and NaCl) on the scaffold mechanical properties, density, swelling behavior and morphological changes. Physical appearance, surface morphology, porosity, molecular diffusion, transparency, biocompatibility and cytocompatibility were also evaluated. Results: The hydrogel scaffolds obtained show high porosity and good optical transparency and mechanical resistance. The scaffolds were successfully employed to culture several cell lines for more than 20 days. Conclusions: The developed scaffolds could be an important tool, as such or with a specific coating, to obtain a more predictive cellular response to evaluate drugs in preclinical studies or for testing chemical compounds, biocides and cosmetics, thus reducing animal testing.

Path planning of mobile robot based on improved PRM and APF

In the field of mobile robot path planning, the artificial potential field (APF) method has been widely researched and applied due to its intuitiveness and efficiency. However, the APF algorithm often encounters challenges such as local minima and unreachable goals in complex environments. To address these issues, this paper proposes innovative path planning algorithm that integrates the advantages of the probabilistic roadmaps method (PRM), by introducing Sobol sampling and elliptical constraints to enhance PRM. The improved PRM not only reduces redundant nodes but also enhances the quality of sampling points. Furthermore, this paper uses the path nodes from the improved PRM as virtual target points for the APF algorithm, and effectively solves the inherent flaws of the APF algorithm through the segmented processing of the attractive force function and the introduction of a relative distance factor in the repulsive force function. Simulation results show that the algorithm reduces planning time, node count, and path length, demonstrate significant improvements in efficiency and performance. In addition, experiments with omnidirectional mobile robots further confirm the effectiveness and reliability of the algorithm in practical applications.

Evolutionary Mechanism of Solidification Behavior in the Melt Pool during Disk Laser Cladding with 316L Alloy

Laser cladding is an emerging environmentally friendly surface-strengthening technology. During the cladding process, the changes in molten pool temperature and velocity directly affect the solidification process and element distribution. The quantitative revelation of the directional solidification mechanism in the molten pool during the cladding process is crucial for enhancing the quality of the cladding layer. In this study, a multi-field coupling numerical model was developed to simulate the coating process of 316L powder on 45 steel matrices using a disk laser. The instantaneous evolution law of the temperature and flow fields was derived, providing input conditions for simulating microstructure evolution in the molten pool’s paste zone. The behavior characteristics of the molten pool were predicted through numerical simulation, and the microstructure evolution was simulated using the phase field method. The phase field model reveals that dendrite formation in the molten pool follows a sequence of plane crystal growth, cell crystal growth, and columnar crystal growth. The dendrites can undergo splitting to form algal structures under conditions of higher cooling rates and lower temperature gradients. The scanning speed of laser cladding (6 mm/s) has minimal impact on dendrite growth; instead, convection within the molten pool primarily influences dendrite growth and tilt and solute distribution.

Nest box-mounted PIT tag readers reveal cryptic recruits of cavity-nesting waterfowl in south Louisiana

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis; BBWD) are rapidly expanding northward into the core range of the eastern Wood Duck (Aix sponsa; WODU), yet little is known about BBWD nesting ecology. Typical field methods to study cavity-nesting waterfowl (i.e., weekly nest monitoring) preclude a full understanding of important breeding information, including nest prospecting and parasitic egg laying. To address this, we used subcutaneous passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags embedded in adults and PIT tag readers mounted on nest boxes with the objective to (1) identify individuals that used nest boxes but were not physically captured on a nest, (2) quantify box visitation, and (3) quantify BBWD pair and WODU hen behaviors during the prospecting, laying, and incubation periods. We deployed RFID readers on 40 nest boxes from March–December 2022 in Louisiana with the potential to detect BBWD and WODU marked with PIT tags in 2020–2022. We detected 48 (BBWD n = 26, WODU n = 22) adults of both species via RFID readers, and 33% (n = 16) of individuals (50% of BBWD, n = 12; 14% of WODU, n = 3) were never otherwise recaptured in 2022, meaning that traditional field methods for cavity-nesting waterfowl fail to document a substantial number of birds potentially contributing to the population via parasitism. We also used Bayesian generalized linear models to determine that both species visited a similar number of “new” (< 1 year old) and “old” (> 1 year old) nest boxes (β = 0.66, CI = -0.30, 1.64). However, BBWD preferentially visited (and subsequently nested in) old boxes at a significantly higher rate than WODU (β = 1.32, CI = 0.97, 1.66). Due to the generalist nature and rapid expansion of BBWD, an apparent aversion to newly installed boxes was unexpected, especially since there were several successful WODU nests in the new boxes before BBWD began nesting in 2022. Our study is one of the first to evaluate BBWD nesting behaviors within the core WODU breeding range, and the first to use nest box-mounted PIT tag readers to observe BBWD behavior.

Research on Intelligent Mining Algorithm of English Translation Text Big Data Based on Deep Learning

This paper explores the translation of English texts by a deep learning algorithm, which aims to intelligently extract relevant records from a large corpus of English-translated texts, especially its shortcomings in processing difficult texts and dealing with long-term dependencies. This research integrates the modern long short-term memory (LSTM) network framework, with the aim of improving the accuracy and processing efficiency of the translation. Using a large number of experimental facts, these LSTM models are comprehensively learned and rigorously optimized. The traditional approach is to adapt the style to the language-specific properties of the translated text, and then use a bunch of evaluation metrics to evaluate the overall performance of the model across a large number of text types. The results of this study show that the method significantly speeds up the extraction and processing of information while maintaining the integrity at the translation level. In addition, the study reveals deep learning models’ ability to recognize complex contextual nuances and subtle formulations of language expression. The results of this research are multifaceted, bringing great improvements to device translation structures and facilitating the development of state-of-the-art text content analysis tools. These advances apply primarily to sectors of considerable statistical volume and complexity, including the criminal, scientific, and technological fields. Therefore, this study lays a foundation for future exploration of improving device understanding of language and automation of translation methods in various professional fields.

Leader-follower control and APF for Multi-USV coordination and obstacle avoidance

To overcome the limitations of a single USV in task execution, this paper investigates the issues of cooperative motion and obstacle avoidance for USV swarm. The leader-follower control approach is chosen as the strategy for coordinating the formation of multiple USVs. Kinematic and kinetic controllers are designed using sliding mode control, with a saturation function replacing the sign function to avoid chattering. The validity of the kinematic and kinetic controllers is demonstrated using the Lyapunov stability theorem. To tackle the problem of goal reachability when obstacles are nearby in the artificial potential field method for obstacle avoidance, the repulsive potential field function is modified by including the distance factor between the USV and the target point. To address the problem of local minimum, the simulated annealing algorithm is incorporated into the traditional artificial potential field method. Multi-condition simulation experiments are conducted using MATLAB. The experimental results demonstrate that multiple USVs can form a formation in a short time and maintain the formation while navigating, exhibiting high robustness. Furthermore, they are able to effectively navigate through complex marine environments, successfully avoiding obstacles and ultimately reaching their target destination.
