Systematic Inventive Thinking Method Based on Theory of Constraints

This paper aims to develop an effective and widely applicable creative design method. First, the relationships of integration between systematic inventive thinking (SIT) and theory of constraints (TOC) were analyzed. According to the analysis, a new model of SIT based on TOC was constructed. Next, the detailed creative design steps of this method were explained and a strategy to upgrade an old system or develop new systems based on an existing one was proposed in terms of this creative method. Then, an example was demonstrated to validate the method. This proposed creative design method is different from conventional approaches, which uses the elements in the design environment, and introduction of new element is avoided.

Research on Method of Knowledge Classification for Supporting Product Creative Design

In order to study creative design technology based on multi-domain knowledge-driven, it has been proposed that a novel method of knowledge classification to support product creative design. This method, using the theory of cognitive psychology classifies knowledge into explicit and tacit knowledge, analyzing knowledge transfer and knowledge creation, combining the characteristics of product design, builds up a creative knowledge supply model by constructing a continuous pedigree of creative design. On this basis, the knowledge supporting creative design has been divided into four types: scientific effect, factual knowledge, knowledge of creative design principles, strategies and methods, and personal tacit knowledge. The types and scope of knowledge have been also discussed in different conceptual design stage. The classification provides a theoretical basis for establishing knowledge system of product creative design.

Green Clamping Devices Based on Two-Step Orthogonal Toggle Force Amplifier Driven by Pneumatic Muscle

As a new kind of flexible pneumatic actuator using clean compressed air as working medium, pneumatic muscle has many particular characteristics comparing with pneumatic cylinder. It can well accord with the development of green transmission technique. Combing pneumatic muscle with mechanical force amplifier is a practical and creative design method. According to this method, two kinds of green pneumatic clamping devices based on two-step orthogonal toggle force amplifier driven by pneumatic muscle are introduced. Their working principles and characteristic features are analyzed and corresponding mechanics calculating formulae are also given respectively.

Enhancing Axiomatic Design with Design Structure Matrix

Axiomatic design (AD) is a popular creative design method, which provides a systematic and scientific basis for making design solutions. The AD method is concentrated on how to find suitable design parameters to meet the needs of functional requirements, while certain system interaction factors and constraints (such as physical connectivity) are not catered directly. As a structured modeling method, more recently the design structure matrix (DSM) model has been regarded as a good roadmap of system interactions. DSM is a good tool representing interactions among design objectives and facilitating analysis of these interactions. Based on the complementarities between AD and DSM, it is proposed to enhance the AD method with DSM. The underlying logic is transforming the AD's design matrix into corresponding DSM for system interaction evaluation, thereby improving the feasibility of AD result. A design example of friction drive conveyor is given to illustrate the proposed design method.

Creative Design of an Elliptical Trainer with Two Degrees of Freedom

The elliptical trainer is a widely used piece of equipment for fitness and rehabilitation. An elliptical trainer with seven links and eight joints, and two degrees of freedom, can have its range of motion adjusted to match the user's stature, and the user can obtain different athletic effects. It allows for more adjustment than an elliptical trainer with one degree of freedom. In this paper, we refer to the present patents that specify the design requirements and constraints for an elliptical trainer. We then use Yan's creative mechanism design methods, which include generalized principles, number synthesis, specialization, and particularization, to obtain a practicable structure for an elliptical trainer with two degrees of freedom. We obtained five alternative kinds of mechanism. We chose one of them for a simulated kinematic analysis, and manufactured the prototype. This paper can serve not only as a reference for the development of fitness equipment but also as a teaching tool for creative mechanism design courses.

Purdue University's Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program

The Purdue University Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program (VT-DLP) is an AVMA-accredited, 70-credit-hour curriculum that grants an Associate of Science degree in veterinary technology. Creation of the VT-DLP required the application of creative instructional design methods to meet the educational goals set by the faculty, maintain an academic rigor equivalent to the on-campus program, and address the concerns and distance-education criticisms of faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders. This article describes the educational principles on which the VT-DLP was created, how various challenges were identified and addressed, and important lessons learned during the creation and delivery of a curriculum that is traditionally very hands-on.

Creative system design methodologies: the case of complex technical systems

This paper explores the impact creative engineering design methodologies will have on the development of conceptual system designs for technically complex systems. To meet the requirements of the many innovations of products and their technology, these technically complex systems must be innovative to make effective use of them. This report generates a value-chain that shows the link between creativity techniques in system design and value to an industry. With the Creativity, Innovation, Competitiveness (CIC) model and the Carayannis, Gonzales and Wetter Innovation framework (Handbook of Innovation Chapters, Elsevier, October 2003), the authors will explore the impact of creative conceptual designs for complex technical systems at the micro, meso, and macro levels of society ( Fig. 1). Thus, we will propose a creative engineering design method to increase the innovativeness of these technically complex systems. Furthermore, this creative design methodology is tailored to work with the processes, content, context, and provide the desire impact.

On the Design of Spring-Actuated Mechanism for 69KV SF6 Gas Insulated Circuit Breaker

This paper studies the design of a spring-actuated mechanism of 69KV SF6 Gas insulated circuit breakers. The creative mechanism design method is first used to synthesize all the feasible mechanisms that satisfy the requirements for the circuit breaker. The kinematics of the mechanism are then analyzed using the vector-loop method. Subsequently, the equations of motion are derived with the Lagrange equation and solved by the Runge-Kutta method. The duration of individual operation, and hence the total duration to complete the full cycle of the mechanism has also been calculated. The times taken for the closing and opening operations were found to be 0.116 and 0.076 sec, respectively, comparable with the experiments.
