Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data for Methanol, Ethanol, Methyl Acetate, Ethyl Acetate, and o-Xylene at 101.3 kPa

Vapor-liquid equilibrium was measured for the binary systems methanol + o-xylene, ethanol + o-xylene, methyl acetate + o-xylene and ethyl acetate + o-xylene, and for the multicomponent mixtures methanol + methyl acetate + o-xylene, ethanol + ethyl acetate + o-xylene, and methanol + ethanol + methyl acetate + ethyl acetate + o-xylene at 101.3 kPa. The Wilson and Van Laar models were compared with the UNIFAC method. Results show that the correlation was satisfactory.

Densities, viscosities, and enthalpies of mixing of the binary system methanol + polyethylene glycol 250 dimethyl ether at 303.15 K

Research on new working fluid pairs for use in absorption refrigeration systems and heat transformers continues. Densities, kinematic viscosities, and excess molar enthalpies have been determined for methanol + polyethylene glycol 250 dimethyl ether at 303.15 K over the entire range of composition and at atmospheric pressure. Experimental viscosities were correlated by the McAllister, Stephan, Soliman, and Marshall correlations.

Simulation of Multicomponent Distillation Using a Nonequilibrium Stage Model

Abstract A nonequilibrium stage model is used to predict composition profiles for binary and multicomponent distillation in a column of spheres and cylinders with a known interfacial area. The profiles generated by the model are compared with experimental data for the binary systems methanol—isopropanol, methanol—water, and isopropanol—water, and for the ternary systems methanol—isopropanol—water and acetone—n—hexane—cyclohexane. The model predicts with a high accuracy the experimental data with an average deviation lower than 1 mol%.

Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria for methanol + ethanol + water and the three constituent binary systems

Vapor-liquid equilibrium data for methanol+ethanol+water and its three constituent binary systems methanol+ethanol, ethanol+water, and methanol+water were measured at 101.3 kPa using a liquid-vapor ebullition-type equilibrium still. The experimental binary data were correlated by the NRTL equation. The ternary system methanol+ethanol+water was predicted by means of the binary NRTL parameters with good accuracy

Phase equilibria in binary and higher systems methanol + hydrocarbon(s)

Experimental determination of liquid-liquid equilibrium data and their representation using the NRTL equation. Fluid Phase Equilibria, 69: 285-301. New measurements of the liquid-liquid equilibrium were carried out in the binary system methanol + hexane in the temperature range from 293 K up to the critical solution temperature, and in the ternary system methanol + hexane + cyclohexane in the temperature range 293–313 K. A double-plait point appearing in the ternary system could be determined exactly with the help of a special ampoule technique. This system shows a remarkably strong temperature dependence of the LLE. The LLE data were correlated using the NRTL equation with temperature-dependent parameters. Reliable results were obtained for the LLE data of the binary and ternary systems. Systematic deviations arise if the modelling of the VLE data is additionally included.

Thermodynamic consistency test of vapor-liquid equilibrium data: - Methanol ∼ water, benzene ∼ cyclohexane and ethyl methyl ketone ∼ water -

A thermodynamic consistency test of vapor-liquid equilibrium data at low pressure has been proposed which permits the over-all check of the data by combining three tests; i) point test and ii) area test based on the generalized Gibbs-Duhem equation, and iii) infinite dilution test on the related thermodynamic equations. The proposed method was applied to the binary miscible systems methanol ∼ water and benzene ∼ cyclohexane at normal pressure and at isothermal conditions, and the partially miscible system, ethyl methyl ketone ∼ water at normal pressure. The number of data sets is 61 in total. The thermodynamic consistency test permits the effective selection of the reliable data among several data sets.

Total vapour pressure measurements and excess Gibbs energies for the binary systems methanol + ethanol, ethanol + 2-propanol, benzene + cyclohexane, benzene + carbon tetrachloride and benzene + ethanol at 303.15 and 313.15 K

A static apparatus for the determination of total vapour pressure isotherms of mixtures has been tested. VLE data for the binary systems methanol + ethanol, ethanol + 2-propanol, benzene + cyclohexane, benzene + carbon tetrachloride and benzene + ethanol at 303.15 and 313.15 K are reported and compared with literature data. The different expressions for G E suitable for correlation of these data are tested. Accuracy of prediction of H E from two ( P, x isotherms is also studied.

Verdet constant of liquids; measurements with a pulsed magnetic field

The dispersion of the Verdet constant of several inorganic and organic liquids was measured at room temperature with a pulsed magnetic field in the spectral range from 0.3471 μm up to 0.6943 μm. We also measured the Verdet constant, at the wavelength of 0.4579 μm and at room temperature, of the three binary systems methanol–water, ethanol–water, and acetic acid–water. We found that the Verdet constant of mixtures is not additive. The deviation from additivity is positive for the three systems.

Sound propagation along a line of plait points of the ternary system methanol–nitrobenzene–iso-octane

At 1 atm and in a given temperature range the ternary liquid system methanol–nitrobenzene–iso-octane has two separate binodal curves which meet at both plait points when temperature is decreased. We have determined the plait point line extending from the binary system methanol–iso-octane to nitrobenzene–iso-octane. Ultrasonic absorption coefficient and velocity measurements, performed along this line as a function of temperature and frequency, seem not to confirm theoretical predictions. Possible discrepancies between theory and experiments are discussed.

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria for Binary Systems of Methanol, Ethyl Alcohol, 1-Propanol, and 2-Propanol with Ethyl Acetate and 1-Propanol-Water.

T h e design and economic operation of fractionating equipment require knowledge of vapor-liquid equilibrium relations of the systems involved in the separation process. Equilibrium data a t two or more temperatures for binary systems composed of a common component and several in a series of homologous compounds allow calculation of thermodynamic properties and interpretation of behavior of the mixtures in relation to the chain length or structure of the homologs. Few experimental investigations of such a series of systems have been reported. Scatchard and his coworkers (25-29) calculated the thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures and, in some instances, t he extent of association and hydrogen bond strength from vapor-liquid equilibrium measurements. Mertes and Colburn (19) reported resul ts of isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium measurements on some of the industrially important systems of hydrocarbons with furfural and made u s e of the variation of activity coefficients with temperature to calculate the heats of solution of the hydrocarbons in furfural. Thus, isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium data can be utilized to calculate the.heats of mixing for those systems for which experimental data cannot b e taken conveniently in a laboratory. Binary systems of methanol, ethyl alcohol, 1-propanol, a d 2-propanol with ethyl acetate and 1-propanol with water were studied in t h i s investigation. Selection of t hese particular systems was based upon the availability of information on solution behavior from other s tudies (I).
