Abstracts of Meteorological Literature

THE Meteorological Magazine for March 1932 contains particulars of a collection of abstracts of meteorological literature which has been undertaken by the Meteorological Office, Air Ministry. The abstracts are being gathered from various sources, including authors' own summaries, translated into English where necessary, and a number of meteorologists have volunteered their assistance in summarising papers for which no abstracts are otherwise available. The collection already numbers about a thousand, covering a period of nearly ten years, and it is hoped to include every important paper published in future. The abstracts are being classified according to subject, the classification adopted being that of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature, which is also employed in the Royal Meteorological Society's Bibliography; the new collection of abstracts will thus form a very useful complement to the latter. The abstracts will not be published, but will be kept in the Meteorological Office Library for reference.

Hail and Sleet in Meteorological Terminology

A? intervals there appears in the meteorological literature of various countries a discussion concerning the proper designation of the smaller and softer forms of hail which are common in all European countries during the winter or spring months. A recent contribution to the subject by R. Giacomelli, appearing in the issue for May and June of La Meteorologia pratica, the organ of the observatory of Montecassino, near Naples, is illuminating from certain points of view, without really settling the question. It is pointed out that the French and German terms, gresil and graupel respectively, have the root idea of little pellets or grains, and that the real Italian equivalent, gragnola, is meteorologically a better descriptive term since it means “little hail.” In full keeping, moreover, with the almost amusing richness of the Italian language in diminutive terms, one may use in place of gragnola the words granzola, granuschia, gragnolischia, all of which are derived from grandinola (grandine, hail), and each of which is locally favoured in various parts of central Italy, where such forms of frozen precipita-,tion are fairly frequent in the spring period, March oand April.

The Cause of Anticyclones

THE steady and persistently high barometric pressure that has prevailed over southern England during most of the autumn naturally causes the desire to know how an anticyclone is produced and maintained in such a situation, but the explanations current in meteorological literature are not for the most part efficacious. It is commonly stated that the high pressure is due to a mass of cold and therefore heavy air above it, but for Europe at least this is in direct opposition to observational results, which show that some three-quarters of the whole mass of air over an anticyclonic area is unduly warm. It is the mass of air over the area that is important; its temperature is quite immaterial, and the real difficulty is to explain why the excess of air does not roll off.

Progress of Meteorology

THE progress of meteorology during the last J- fifty years has been very marked, as may be seen by a casual reference to the current meteorological literature of the period 1865–75; to a great extent, it resembles the emergence of astronomy as an exact science from the old astrology, but it must be confessed that the Newton of meteorology has not yet appeared.
