Metal-poor star formation at z > 6 with JWST: new insight into hard radiation fields and nitrogen enrichment on 20 pc scales

ABSTRACT Nearly a decade ago, we began to see indications that reionization-era galaxies power hard radiation fields rarely seen at lower redshift. Most striking were detections of nebular C iv emission in what appeared to be typical low-mass galaxies, requiring an ample supply of 48 eV photons to triply ionize carbon. We have obtained deep JWST/NIRSpec R = 1000 spectroscopy of the two z > 6 C iv-emitting galaxies known prior to JWST. Here, we present a rest-UV to optical spectrum of one of these two systems, the multiply-imaged z = 6.1 lensed galaxy RXCJ2248-ID. NIRCam imaging reveals two compact (<22 pc) clumps separated by 220 pc, with one comprising a dense concentration of massive stars (>10 400 M⊙ yr−1 kpc−2) formed in a recent burst. We stack spectra of 3 images of the galaxy (J = 24.8–25.9), yielding a very deep spectrum providing a high-S/N template of strong emission line sources at z > 6. The spectrum reveals narrow high-ionization lines (He ii, C iv, N iv]) with line ratios consistent with powering by massive stars. The rest-optical spectrum is dominated by very strong emission lines ([O iii] EW = 2800 Å), albeit with weak emission from low-ionization transitions ([O iii]/[O ii] = 184). The electron density is found to be very high (6.4–31.0 × 104 cm−3) based on three UV transitions. The ionized gas is metal poor ($12+\log (\rm O/H)=7.43^{+0.17}_{-0.09}$), yet highly enriched in nitrogen ($\log (\rm N/O)=-0.39^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$). The spectrum appears broadly similar to that of GNz11 at z = 10.6, without showing the same AGN signatures. We suggest that the hard radiation field and rapid nitrogen enrichment may be a short-lived phase that many z > 6 galaxies go through as they undergo strong bursts of star formation. We comment on the potential link of such spectra to globular cluster formation.

EMPRESS. XI. SDSS and JWST Search for Local and z ∼4–5 Extremely Metal-poor Galaxies (EMPGs): Clustering and Chemical Properties of Local EMPGs

We search for local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs), selecting photometric candidates by broadband color excess and machine-learning techniques with the SDSS photometric data. After removing stellar contaminants by shallow spectroscopy with Seimei and Nayuta telescopes, we confirm that three candidates are EMPGs with 0.05–0.1 Z ⊙ by deep Magellan/MagE spectroscopy for faint [Oiii] λ4363 lines. Using a statistical sample consisting of 105 spectroscopically confirmed EMPGs taken from our study and the literature, we calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) of the EMPGs and all SDSS galaxies to quantify environments of EMPGs. Comparing another CCF of all SDSS galaxies and comparison of SDSS galaxies in the same stellar-mass range (107.0–108.4 M ⊙), we find no significant (>1σ) difference between these two CCFs. We also compare mass–metallicity relations (MZRs) of the EMPGs and those of galaxies at z ∼ 0–4 with a steady chemical evolution model and find that the EMPG MZR is comparable with the model prediction on average. These clustering and chemical properties of EMPGs are explained by a scenario of stochastic metal-poor gas accretion on metal-rich galaxies showing metal-poor star formation. Extending the broadband color excess technique to a high-z EMPG search, we select 17 candidates of z ∼ 4–5 EMPGs with the deep (≃30 mag) near-infrared JWST/NIRCam images obtained by ERO and ERS programs. We find galaxy candidates with negligible [Oiii] λ λ 4959,5007 emission weaker than the local EMPGs and known high-z galaxies, suggesting that some of these candidates may fall in the range of 0–0.01 Z ⊙, which potentially breaks the lowest metallicity limit known to date.

Hunting for C-rich long-period variable stars in the Milky Way’s bar-bulge using unsupervised classification ofGaiaBP/RP spectra

ABSTRACTThe separation of oxygen- and carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch sources is crucial for their accurate use as local and cosmological distance and age/metallicity indicators. We investigate the use of unsupervised learning algorithms for classifying the chemistry of long-period variables from Gaia DR3’s BP/RP spectra. Even in the presence of significant interstellar dust, the spectra separate into two groups attributable to O-rich and C-rich sources. Given these classifications, we utilize a supervised approach to separate O-rich and C-rich sources without blue and red photometers (BP/RP) spectra but instead given broadband optical and infrared photometry finding a purity of our C-rich classifications of around 95 per cent. We test and validate the classifications against other advocated colour–colour separations based on photometry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the potential of BP/RP spectra for finding S-type stars or those possibly symbiotic sources with strong emission lines. Although our classification suggests the Galactic bar-bulge is host to very few C-rich long-period variable stars, we do find a small fraction of C-rich stars with periods $\gt 250\, \mathrm{day}$ that are spatially and kinematically consistent with bar-bulge membership. We argue the combination of the observed number, the spatial alignment, the kinematics, and the period distribution disfavour young metal-poor star formation scenarios either in situ or in an accreted host, and instead, these stars are highly likely to be the result of binary evolution and the evolved versions of blue straggler stars already observed in the bar-bulge.

Metal-poor star formation triggered by the feedback effects from Pop III stars

Metal enrichment by first-generation (Pop III) stars is the very first step of the matter cycle in structure formation and it is followed by the formation of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. To investigate the enrichment process by Pop III stars, we carry out a series of numerical simulations including the feedback effects of photoionization and supernovae (SNe) of Pop III stars with a range of masses of minihaloes (MHs), Mhalo, and Pop III stars, MPopIII. We find that the metal-rich ejecta reach neighbouring haloes and external enrichment (EE) occurs when the H ii region expands before the SN explosion. The neighbouring haloes are only superficially enriched, and the metallicity of the clouds is [Fe/H] < −5. Otherwise, the SN ejecta fall back and recollapse to form an enriched cloud, i.e. an internal-enrichment (IE) process takes place. In the case where a Pop III star explodes as a core-collapse SN (CCSN), the MH undergoes IE, and the metallicity in the recollapsing region is −5 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ −3 in most cases. We conclude that IE from a single CCSN can explain the formation of EMP stars. For pair-instability SNe (PISNe), EE takes place for all relevant mass ranges of MHs, consistent with the lack of observational signs of PISNe among EMP stars.

Revisiting the Extended Schmidt Law: The Important Role of Existing Stars in Regulating Star Formation

Abstract We revisit the proposed extended Schmidt law, which posits that the star formation efficiency in galaxies depends on the stellar mass surface density, by investigating spatially resolved star formation rates (SFRs), gas masses, and stellar masses of star formation regions in a vast range of galactic environments, from the outer disks of dwarf galaxies, to spiral disks and to merging galaxies, as well as individual molecular clouds in M33. We find that these regions are distributed in a tight power law as ∝ , which is also valid for the integrated measurements of disk and merging galaxies at high-z. Interestingly, we show that star formation regions in the outer disks of dwarf galaxies with down to 10−5 yr−1 kpc−2, which are outliers of both the Kennicutt–Schmidt and Silk–Elmegreen laws, also follow the extended Schmidt law. Other outliers in the Kennicutt–Schmidt law, such as extremely metal-poor star formation regions, also show significantly reduced deviation from the extended Schmidt law. These results suggest an important role for existing stars in helping to regulate star formation through the effect of their gravity on the midplane pressure in a wide range of galactic environments.

AbstractI address the issue of dust and gas as seeds for metal-poor star formation by reviewing what we know about star formation in nearby dwarf galaxies and its relationship to the gas and dust. I (try to) speculate on the extent to which processes in nearby galaxies mimic star formation in the early universe.

On the formation of metal-poor stars

The expulsion of metal-rich grains from collapsing protostars is considered, and it is concluded that stars of mass greater than 21M⊙ could be significantly depleted in heavy metals during their formation.
