Arsenic and Heavy Metals in Soils and Plants near Sulfide Mines: Implications for Phytoremediation and Phytomanagement.

The accumulation of heavy metals (i.e., As, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils and native plant species near copper, nickel, and pyrite mines in Vietnam was assessed. The highest soil As, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations recorded in mine soils were 42.3, 1570, 9870, 128, and 462 mg/kg, and those in agricultural soils were 11.4, 453, 94.9, 34.4, and 147 mg/kg, respectively. Pollution index (PI) values indicated heavy pollution (PI = 3.99-13.0) for mine soils, and unpolluted to severely polluted (PI = 0.65-2.84) for agricultural soils. Soil enrichment factors had a wide range, from minimal to extreme enrichment of heavy metals (EF = 0.03-91.4). Arsenic minerals may be the main source of high As concentrations in sulfide mines. The As, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations of 20 native plant species near three mines were in the ranges of 0.05-1150, 3.17-123, 0.47-291, 0.08-6.34, and 6.87-168 mg/kg (dry weight, DW), respectively. Based on the recorded hyperaccumulation levels (1150 mg/kg, DW), bioaccumulation factors (BAF = 2.4-90.0), biomass, and rapid growth, Pteris vittata L. is considered a promising plant for phytoextraction of As in soils. Bidens pilosa L. has potential for phytostabilization of sulfide-bearing soils, given its low concentrations of heavy metals in plant shoots, BAF values of <1, high biomass, and wide distribution. Integrated phytoremediation and phytomanagement are applicable to metal-contaminated soils. Phytomining, energy crops, and vegetation cover should be investigated for the phytomanagement of metal-contaminated soils in mining areas.

Heavy Metal Contamination and Risk of Sunflower Germination and Heavy Metal Translocation

Background: Heavy metal contamination in soils adversely affects plant growth, particularly in crops used for phytoremediation, such as sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Understanding the response of different sunflower varieties to heavy metal stress is crucial for developing effective phytoremediation strategies.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) on the germination, growth attributes, and metal translocation of two sunflower varieties, Hysun-33 and FH-533.Methods: Sunflower seeds of Hysun-33 and FH-533 were sown in sand-filled pots treated with 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM of Ni, Cd, and Pb. Germination rates, shoot and root lengths, and dry biomass were measured after 20 days. Metal concentrations in roots and shoots were analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy, and statistical analyses, including ANOVA and regression, were performed to assess the effects of metal concentrations.Results: Germination rates for Hysun-33 decreased from 79% at 0 mM to 0% at 200 mM, while FH-533 dropped from 75% to 5%. Shoot lengths decreased by 47% at 150 mM Ni, and root biomass was reduced by 62% under 200 mM Cd for both varieties.Conclusion: Cadmium posed the greatest threat to sunflower growth, emphasizing the need for enhanced metal tolerance in phytoremediation applications. Reducing heavy metal contamination in crops is vital for improving food safety and public health.

A new species of Odontarrhena (Brassicaceae) endemic to Greek ultramafics: From taxonomy to metal accumulation behavior

AbstractA new species of Odontarrhena (Brassicaceae) is described from Mount Vourinos in western Macedonia, Greece. The species is restricted to the ridge and the northern slopes of Mt. Vourinos above 1500 m a.s.l. and grows on stony slopes and dry rocky grassland on ultramafic soil with elevated trace metal concentrations. Based on morphological, karyological, and nrDNA sequences, the species is tetraploid with supernumerary B‐chromosomes (2n = 4× = 32 + 2B) and related to the Balkan endemic Odontarrhena decipiens. It differs from the latter mainly by the habit of subshrub with woody base and a denser indumentum of stellate trichomes, resulting in a white‐silvery color of the leaves and shoots. The presence of four degenerate positions in the ITS1 region was detected only in the new species from Mt. Vourinos. Shoot Ni concentrations determined by x‐ray fluorescence analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy were largely variable (6200–18,700 μg g−1 dw), but always significantly higher than in roots. Hydroponic trials confirmed the typical features of Ni hyperaccumulating plants, such as growth stimulating effect at low metal doses and shoot metal concentration above the hyperaccumulation threshold. The new species of Odontarrhena is a Ni hyperaccumulator with substantial aboveground biomass production, making it a promising candidate for phytomining applications.

Phytoremediation of heavy metals spiked soil by Celosia argentea L.: effect on plant growth and metal stabilization.

Soil contaminated with heavy metals cause serious threat to the soil quality, biota, and human. The removal or stabilization of heavy metals through plants is an environment friendly approach. The aim of study was to assess the potential of Celosia argentea L. for the phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soil. Soil was spiked with different levels (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400mg/kg) of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and Zn (Zn). Experiment was carried out in greenhouse and impact of heavy metals was evaluated on plant by assessing the germination rate and plant growth. To evaluate either plant has potential to extract/stabilize the heavy metals, concentration in roots and shoot, translocation factor (TF), bioconcentration factor (BCF), and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) were determined. Application of heavy metals significantly affected the germination rate and minimum (26.6%) was observed in Cr spiked soil (400mg/kg). Moreover, the biomass of C. argentea was also affected by the application of heavy metals. However, the concentration of heavy metals in roots and shoots were low. The BCF and BAF of C. argentea was lower than 1 except at lower levels of Pb and Zn, but the TF was greater than 1. The TF showed that plants have capability to transfer heavy metals to shoots once they are taken up by roots. However, based on the BCF and concentrations of heavy metals in shoots, it is evident that plant could play important role in the phytostabilization of heavy metals polluted soil.

Effects of Earthworm, Straw, and Citric Acid on the Remediation of Zn, Pb, and Cd Contaminated Soil by Solanum photeinocarpum and Pterocypsela indica

Regulation of exogenous substances and intercropping are effective methods to improve the efficiency of phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. A pot experiment was used to study the effects of earthworms, straw, and citric acid on the remediation of Zn, Pb, and Cd contaminated soil by monocropping and intercropping of Solanum photeinocarpum and Pterocypsela indica. The results showed that the bioaccumulation factors (BCF) of earthworms for Zn, Pb, and Cd were 0.07-0.13, 0.10-0.26, and 5.64-15.52, respectively. The addition of straw in the soil increased the biomass of earthworms by 22.29%-223.87% but reduced the heavy metal concentrations by 8.15%-62.58%. Straw and citric acid showed passivation and activation effects, respectively, but earthworms had no significant effect on the available concentrations of heavy metals in the soil. Earthworms had no significant effect on the heavy metal concentrations of P. indica but reduced the heavy metal concentrations of S. photeinocarpum. Straw showed an inhibitory effect on the concentrations of heavy metals in P. indica but promoted the concentrations of Cd in S. photeinocarpum. Citric acid had no significant effect on the heavy metal concentrations in S. photeinocarpum but significantly increased the Pb concentrations in P. indica. Intercropping significantly reduced the soil available heavy metal concentrations and increased the heavy metal concentrations in plant roots; however, it had no significant effect on heavy metal concentrations in plant shoots. The total extraction amounts of Zn, Pb, and Cd by plants were mainly manifested as P. indica>intercropping>S. photeinocarpum. The addition of earthworms increased the total extraction amounts of Zn, Pb, and Cd by 12.49%, 35.89%, and 29.01%, respectively, and the addition of straw+earthworms increased the total extraction amounts of Pb by 87.21%. The results indicated that straw significantly promoted the growth of earthworms and reduced their accumulation of heavy metals, and the addition of earthworms alone or in combination with straw can effectively improve the remediation potential of P. indica of Zn, Pb, and Cd contaminated soil.

Phytoremediation Potential of Native Hyperaccumulator Plants Growing on Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soil of Khatunabad Copper Smelter and Refinery, Iran

The characterization of prospective plants is one of the critical issues in the efficiency and success of the phytoremediation process. Due to adaption and tolerance to different environmental stresses, native plant species have priority in this method. This study examined fifty plants of five species, namely Launaea acanthodes, Artemisia sp., Cousinia congesta, Peganum harmala, and Stipa sp., growing near a smelter and refinery in Iran to identify potential species for phytoextraction and phytostabilization. Therefore, Pb, Ni, Mn, Mo, S, and Cu concentrations in sampled plants and soils were analyzed. Three different pollution indices, namely metal accumulation index (MAI), translocation factor (TF), and bioconcentration factor (BCF) were used for evaluating the metal concentrations in roots and shoots of each plant species. The results indicated that Artemisia sp., with values of 3.21, 1.09, and 1.14 for MAI, BCF, and TF, respectively, is appropriate for phytoextraction in the study area. Plants such as Launaea acanthodes and Cousinia congesta with high BCF and low TF values showed the potential for phytostabilization. Investigating the indices for different elements demonstrated that Launaea acanthodes had a BCF value greater than 1 and a TF value less than 1; therefore, this plant could be used in the phytoremediation of arsenic through the phytostabilization technique. Furthermore, copper has very low bioavailability in these plant species. In addition, these native plant species were highly capable of accumulating sulfur from the soil because the BCF and TF indices for all inspected species were higher than 1; for Launaea acanthodes, the relevant TF value was about 10. The proposed native plant could be applied in practical applications of phytoremediation for soil remediation of contaminated sites around the metal factories and mines in southeastern Iran.

Phytotoxity of waste waters with Cr and

The dry and fresh biomass and metal concentration (Cr, Ni) in roots and shoots of mustard (S. alba L.) seedlings was evaluated in laboratory experiments with three types of washing waste-waters from cutlery production line. All tested washing waters reduced root dry mass, where-as the dry mass of shoots was either not affected or it increased. The effect of tested washing waters was stronger on fresh mass production than on dry mass production. This indicates problems in water reception and translocation. While the accumulation of Cr was higher in the roots, Ni was distributed equally through the whole plant seedling. Cr uptake in the roots and shoots was in average about 1.7 and 7.3 times, respectively, lower than that of Ni. Ni percentage uptake from washing waters in the roots and shoots was nearly equal and range from 10.2 to 15.8%.

Phytoattenuation of Cd, Pb, and Zn in a Slag-contaminated Soil Amended with Rice Straw Biochar and Grown with Energy Maize.

Biochar has attracted interest due to its ability to improve soil fertility, soil carbon, and crop yield. Also, biochar can adsorb metals and render them less bioavailable. We investigated the soil availability, sequential extraction, and maize uptake of Cd, Pb, and Zn in a highly contaminated soil amended with rice straw biochar rates (0.0, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, and 30.0 Mg ha-1). We hypothesized that biochar application to the soil cultivated with maize attenuates metal toxicity and mobility in slag-polluted soils near an abandoned Pb smelting plant in Brazil. Results showed that applying biochar increased the soil organic carbon, CEC, and P up to 27, 30, and 107, respectively. Plant accumulation of P and N was 104 and 32% higher than control, while aerial and root biomasses were increased by 18 and 23%. The sequential extraction showed that Pb and Zn in the original soil were retained mainly in residual fractions (94 and 87%, respectively), while Cd was mostly allocated in the organic fraction (47%). Biochar rates increased the proportion of Cd in the organic fraction to 85%, while Pb and Zn were redistributed mainly into iron oxides. The Cd, Pb, and Zn bioavailability assessed by DTPA decreased 32% in the biochar-amended soil, reducing plants' metal uptake. The maize biomass increase, metal soil bioavailability decrease, and low metal concentration in shoots driven by biochar indicate that phytoattenuation using rice straw biochar and maize cultivation could reduce risks to humans and the environment in the polluted sites of Santo Amaro.

Enhancement by soil micro-arthropods of phytoextraction of metal-contaminated soils using a hyperaccumulator plant species

There is little information available on the potential influence of soil micro-arthropods on the phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils using hyperaccumulator plants. We hypothesized that soil micro-arthropods may promote organic matter decomposition, thereby releasing nitrogen and enhancing the growth of and metal uptake by hyperaccumulators and thereby increase phytoextraction efficiency. Four highly contaminated soils with a range of metal contents were used in a pot experiment to study the effects of the collembolan Folsomia candida and the mite Hypoaspis aculeifer on phytoextraction by Sedum plumbizincicola, a cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) hyperaccumulator. Both micro-arthropods survived when the hyperaccumulator grew in the four soils. F. candida slightly increased the growth of S. plumbizincicola and shoot metal concentrations increased significantly in the presence of F. candida with or without H. aculeifer. Soil fauna increased shoot Cd accumulation by 27.9–66.3% compared to corresponding control soils. Similar shoot 15N abundances across treatments and decreasing shoot N content in two of the soils with addition of F. candida indicate that the promotion of phytoextraction was not associated with increasing plant nitrogen uptake from organic matter by F. candida. The mechanism of plant growth promotion might be an interaction between the soil fauna and the roots of the hyperaccumulator and this merits further investigation. This work highlights for the first time a potential role of soil micro-arthropods in the phytoextraction of metal-polluted soils.

Remediation of a metal-contaminated soil by chemical washing and repeated phytoextraction: a field experiment

Agricultural soil contaminated with potentially toxic metals poses great health risk to humans and it requires long-term remediation. Here, we investigate the remediation of metal-polluted agricultural soil by combining chemical washing with repeated phytoextraction. The polluted field was initially washed with 40 mmol L−1 FeCl3 (F) or 20 mmol L−1 FeCl3 + 40 mmol L−1 citric acid (F + C). After the application of organic fertilizer (O), lime (L), and sepiolite (S), Sedum plumbizincicola was cultivated for three successive crops from 2017 to 2019. Results showed that the soil washed with FeCl3 had high removal efficiencies of Cd (35.2%), Pb (24.3%), and Zn (26.6%). Although the shoot biomass and metal concentrations of S. plumbizincicola decreased significantly in the first crop, there were no significant differences in the subsequent two crops. Throughout the remediation process, the higher total removal efficiencies of Cd, Pb, and Zn were conducted in F + OLS treatment which observed in 71.0, 34.0, and 47.7%, respectively. The results, therefore, conclusively indicated that combining chemical washing with repeated phytoextraction showed considerable potential for the remediation of agricultural soils polluted with multiple metals. However, further studies are required to focus on the amelioration of the degraded soil quality and safe agricultural production.

Measuring Soil Metal Bioavailability in Roadside Soils of Different Ages

Finding a reliable method to predict soil metal bioavailability in aged soil continues to be one of the most important problems in contaminated soil chemistry. To investigate the bioavailability of metals aged in soils, we used roadside soils that had accumulated metals from vehicle emissions over a range of years. We collected topsoil (0–10 cm) samples representing new-, medium- and old-aged roadside soils and control site soil. These soils were studied to compare the ability of the diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT), soil water extraction, CaCl2 extraction, total metal concentrations and optimised linear models to predict metal bioavailability in wheat plants. The response time for the release of metals and the effect on metal bioavailability in field aged soils was also studied. The DGT, and extractable metals such as CaCl2 extractable and soil solution metals in soil, were not well correlated with metal concentrations in wheat shoots. In comparison, the strongest relationships with concentrations in wheat shoots were found for Ni and Zn total metal concentrations in soil (e.g., Ni r = 0.750, p = 0.005 and Zn r = 0.833, p = 0.001); the correlations were still low, suggesting that total metal concentrations were also not a robust measure of bioavailability. Optimised linear models incorporating soil physiochemical properties and metal extracts together with road age as measure of exposure time, demonstrated a very strong relationship for Mn R2 = 0.936; Ni R2 = 0.936 and Zn R2 = 0.931. While all the models developed were dependent on total soil metal concentrations, models developed for Mn and Zn clearly demonstrated the effect of road age on metal bioavailability. Therefore, the optimised linear models developed have the potential for robustly predicting bioavailable metal concentrations in field soils where the metals have aged in situ. The intrinsic rate of release of metals increased for Mn (R2 = 0.617, p = 0.002) and decreased for Cd (R2 = 0.456, p = 0.096), Cu (R2 = 0.560, p = 0.083) and Zn (R2 =0.578, p = 0.072). Nickel did not show any relationship between dissociation time (Tc) and road age. Roadside soil pH was likely to be the key parameter controlling metal aging in roadside soil.

Production of Antioxidant Molecules in Polygonum aviculare (L.) and Senecio vulgaris (L.) under Metal Stress: A Possible Tool in the Evaluation of Plant Metal Tolerance.

Plants growing on heavy metal (HM)-polluted soils show toxicity symptoms, such as chlorosis and growth reduction, and undergo oxidative stress due to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Plants overcome oxidative stress by producing a wide range of antioxidant molecules, such as polyphenols and flavonoids. The aim of the present work was to study the accumulation of these molecules in response to increasing concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn and to assess whether they can be used as a tool in assessing metal-related stress in Polygonum aviculare and Senecio vulgaris. On average, P. aviculare shoots accumulated lower amounts of metals than S. vulgaris shoots. The uptake of all six elements was correlated and proportional to their concentration in the nutrient solution (ρ > 0.9), with the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) being >1 for most of them. The present research demonstrated that 82% of the samples showed a good correlation (|ρ| > 0.5) between the level of polyphenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity and the metal concentration in plant shoots, confirming that the metal stress level and production of phenolic compounds having antioxidant activity were strictly connected. Nonetheless, the mere quantification of these molecules cannot identify the type of metal that caused the oxidative stress, neither determine the concentration of the stressors. The five tested populations of each species did not show any specific adaptation to the environment of origin.

Effects of plant species and traits on metal treatment and phytoextraction in stormwater bioretention

To study effects of plant species selection on total and dissolved metal treatment performance of bioretention systems (BRS), 12 sets of columns were prepared, each planted with one of 12 species that are either widely used in BRS or have potentially important traits for metal removal (ability to hyperaccumulate metals, C4 photosynthesis, or ability to form mycorrhiza). Artificial stormwater was applied to half of the columns during all of a 31-week test period, while treatment of the others included a 5-week long dry period to test interactive effects of drying and plant traits on BRS metal treatment in more realistic alternating wet and dry conditions. Concentrations of metals (dissolved and total) in the effluent significantly differed between most columns with different plants, and the differences in concentrations of dissolved metals after the dry period were particularly important. Mean dissolved Cd concentrations exceeded Swedish reference values in effluents from BRS with two of the plant species, while mean dissolved Zn concentrations exceeded them in effluents from BRS with three of the species (and non-vegetated controls). Dissolved Cu leaching was observed in effluents from BRS with five of the plant species after the dry period, and mean concentrations exceeded Swedish reference values in effluents from all the BRS (including the constantly watered systems). Some support in terms of metal concentrations in shoots and shoot/soil ratios was obtained for using hyperaccumulators in BRS to remove metals from filter material. For example, Armeria maritima (a hyperaccumulator with the lowest shoot biomass) and Miscanthus sinsenis (a C4 plant with the highest biomass production) took up similar amounts of metals despite large differences in biomass. However, no significant correlations between effluent metal concentrations and plants’ metal uptake were found, possibly because of the short duration of the experiment. The results indicate that root biomass affected effluent metal concentrations more strongly. Root biomass was often positively correlated with total and (particularly) dissolved effluent metal concentrations. Further experiments with different soil metal concentrations, organic matter analyses and stronger focus on root characteristics are recommended, including additional tests of effects of hyperaccumulators and mycorrhiza on metal treatment and phytoextraction.

Restoring the plant productivity of heavy metal-contaminated soil using phosphate sludge, marble waste, and beneficial microorganisms

Assisted natural remediation (ANR) has been highlighted as a promising, less expensive, and environmentally friendly solution to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals. We tested the effects of three amendments (10% compost, C; 5 or 15% phosphate sludge, PS5 and PS15; and 5 or 15% marble waste, MW5 and MW15) in combination with microorganism inoculation (rhizobacteria consortium alone, mycorrhizae alone, and the two in-combination) on alfalfa in contaminated soil. Plant concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Pb were measured, along with proline and malondialdehyde production. The microbiological and physicochemical properties of the mining soil were evaluated. Application of the amendments allowed germination and promoted growth. Inoculation with the rhizobacteria consortium and/or mycorrhizae stimulated plant growth. PS and MW stimulated the production of proline. Inoculation of alfalfa with the rhizobacteria-mycorrhizae mixture and the application of MW allowed the safe cultivation of the legume, as shown by the low concentrations of metals in plant shoots. Zn and Pb concentrations were below the limits recommended for animal grazing and accumulated essentially in roots. Soil analyses showed the positive effect of the amendments on the soil physicochemical properties. All treatments increased soil pH (around 7), total organic carbon, and assimilable phosphorus content. Notably, an important decrease in soluble heavy metals concentrations was observed. Overall, our findings revealed that the applied treatments reduced the risk of metal-polluted soils limiting plant growth. The ANR has great potential for success in the restoration of polymetallic and acidic mining soils using the interaction between alfalfa, microorganisms, and organo-mineral amendments.

Metal accumulation and rhizosphere characteristics of Noccaea rotundifolia ssp. cepaeifolia

This work aimed to investigate the metal accumulation characteristics as well as biogeochemical changes in the rhizosphere and root foraging strategies of this plant species. Previous reports suggested that Noccaea rotundifolia ssp. cepaeifolia is a Zn, Cd and Pb hyperaccumulator. We used hydroponic, rhizobox and split-pot experiments for studying metal accumulation and related rhizosphere processes. Although this species accumulated up to 1250 mg Pb kg−1 and 27,000 mg Zn kg−1 in shoots, translocation factors <1 do not meet the hyperaccumulation criteria. Substantial increases in Ca(NO3)2-extractable metals in the N. rotundifolia rhizosphere of a metal-spiked soil can be explained by proton release from N. rotundifolia roots to maintain the charge balance during excessive metal uptake; this was not observed for the non-spiked, moderately contaminated control soil. Specific rhizosphere mechanisms targeting the alleviation of metal toxicity in N. rotundifolia rhizosphere were not detected. Generally, N. rotundifolia had larger total root and shoot mass in soils with heterogeneous distribution of Zn and Pb relative to homogeneous treatments, associated with less root mass placed in metal-enriched patches. However, the avoidance strategy was not reflected by low shoot metal concentrations. Metal accumulation rates and translocation factors do not meet the criteria for hyperaccumulation. Changes of pH and DOC in N. rotundifolia rhizosphere were apparently not involved in targeted immobilisation or detoxification of Pb, Zn and Cd. Avoidance of metal-rich patches in soil is a major tolerance strategy of N. rotundifolia.

Alkaline amendments improve the health of soils degraded by metal contamination and acidification: Crop performance and soil bacterial community responses

Soil degradation due to heavy metal contamination and acidification has negative effects on soil health and crop growth. Many previous studies have tried to improve the growth of crops and decrease their metal uptake. The recovery of soil health, however, has rarely been focused in soil remediation. In this study, a pot trial was conducted with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) growing in heavy metal contaminated and acidic soils, to examine the effects of alkaline amendments (limestone, LS; calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, Pcm) and organic amendments (cow manure compost, CMC; biochar, BC) on the growth of lettuce and on the availability of heavy metals, enzyme activities, and bacterial community structures in the soils. The results showed that, in comparison with the CMC and BC treatments, LS and Pcm were more effective at improving lettuce growth and reducing metal concentrations in shoots. Urease and catalase activities in LS and Pcm amended soils were consistently higher than in those with CMC and BC. Additionally, the alkaline amendments dramatically improved the bacterial diversity and shaped more favorable bacterial community structures. Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes were predominant in soils amended with alkaline treatments. The beneficial bacterial genera Gemmatimonas and f_Gemmatimonadaceae, which are vital for phosphate dissolution, microbial nitrogen metabolism, and soil respiration, were also enriched. The results suggest that alkaline amendments were superior to organic amendments, and thus may be useful for the future recovery of soil functions and health under heavy metal contamination and low pH.

Phytoremediation of acid mine drainage using by-product of lysine fermentation.

The main point of this research is to assess the applicability of condensed molasses soluble (CMS), which is an organic by-product of lysine fermentation, as an environmentally friendly complexing agent in rhizofiltration of heavy metal contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD). First, the ecotoxicological properties (growth inhibition, seed germination) of CMS were examined with often applied indicator plant species such as duckweed (Lemna minor) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) so as to define the possible applicable CMS concentration. Then the heavy metal accumulation and translocation properties of root accumulator plant species, i.e. common reed (Phragmites australis) and sedge (Carex flacca), were studied to optimize CMS concentration for rhizofiltration. Due to the CMS application, significant increase in bioaccumulation was detected in the case of every examined heavy metal (As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) at the end of the experiment. Results also showed that CMS increased the heavy metal concentration in shoots, but did not affect the root accumulation characteristics of the plants. Furthermore, CMS treated plants accumulated heavy metals at higher rates in their roots compared to control. The results suggest that CMS is a viable additive and a complexing agent to aid rhizofiltration of heavy metal contaminated AMD.

Comparative residual effect of activated carbon and other organic amendments on immobilization and phytoavailability nickel and other metals to Egyptian Clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) in contaminated soil

The effect of organic amendments on phytoavailability of nickel (Ni) and other metals in soil may change with time due to transformation of organic matter. We investigated the residual effect of organic amendments (farm manure [FM], poultry manure [PM], pressmud [PrM], and activated carbon [AC]) to immobilize Ni and other metals in soil and absorption of metals by Egyptian clover. Fresh and dry weights of Egyptian clover increased significantly (p < 0.05) due to residual effect of amendments compared to control. Extractable Ni and other metals had significant positive correlation with residual organic matter in soil. Extractable manganese (Mn) in post-harvest soil of Egyptian clover increased compared with that of post-harvest soil of maize (previous crop). However, extractable copper (Cu) decreased with amendments. Copper was the maximum in control followed by AC. Zinc in soil decreased in FM and PrM treated pots but increased in pots amended with PM and AC. Concentration of Ni, Mn, and Cu was the minimum in shoots of those plants grown with AC amended pots compared to the control. It was concluded that AC was the most effective for immobilization of metals in soil which consequently decreased the concentration of metals in shoots of Egyptian clover.

Mobilization of Heavy Metals in a Soil-Plant System and Risk Assessment in the Dabaoshan Mine Area, Guangdong Province, China

This study analyzed heavy metal concentrations in mining/agricultural soil and plant samples from the Dabaoshan mining-impacted region, Guangdong Province, and evaluated the corresponding health risks. The results showed that most of the soil samples exhibited a pH<5, which, in some cases, facilitated the release of Cu, Pb, and Al from soil and hence affected the availability for plant uptake. Farmland in Shaxi town was found to be seriously polluted by Cd, whereas the mining area was seriously polluted by Cd, Pb, Cu, and As, which present potential ecological risks. Farmland in Xinjiang town was seriously polluted by Cu, As, and Cd, and also present ecological risks for this area. The concentrations of heavy metals (especially Al and Fe) in the eight plant species assessed were mostly higher than that in plants grown in non-contaminated soil. Only 10% of the bioconcentration factors and 18% of the translocation factors were higher than 1 in the aerial parts of plants, indicating that most heavy metals were concentrated in plant roots. Heavy metal concentrations in shoots of Miscanthus and Blechnum orientale were not high, and their accumulation from soil to plant was poor. These plants are excluder species and can be used for in situ phyto-stabilization and management. Weeds like Soliva anthemifolia species in contaminated agricultural field showed a strong enrichment ability for Cd. Rice mainly accumulated As and Cd in the roots and belongs to root compartment plants.

Effect of zeolite on absorption and distribution of heavy metal concentrations in roots and shoots of wheat under soil contaminated with weapons

War is one of the causes of agricultural lands pollution. One of the problems of this kind is pollution of heavy metals caused by the use of various types of weapons. These elements have entered the plant's life cycle and leads to endangering human health. The use of zeolite is a solution for this problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of natural zeolite on absorption and distribution of heavy metals in wheat. This experiment was conducted as a factorial based on completely randomized design with three replications. The treatments consisted of non-application of zeolite (zero) (control), 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 percent of soil weight and two different types of soil include, contaminated and non-contaminated soil with war weapons. The results showed that the concentration of chromium, lead, and antimony increased in the roots and shoots in contaminated soil, significantly. The values of these elements were higher in roots as compared to shoots. The application of zeolite contributes significantly to the stabilization of heavy elements in contaminated soils and reduces their concentration in the shoots and roots and increases the food safety and food security which could be considered by researchers and farmers.
