La liebre ibérica (Lepus granatensis) es un mamífero ubicuo en la península ibérica con importantes implicaciones ecológicas y económicas. Para conocer el estatus sanitario de esta especie, se han estudiado la cavidad abdominal y órganos del aparato digestivo de 85 liebres ibéricas procedentes del Altiplano de la Región de Murcia (sureste de España). La prevalencia total de helmintos hallada fue del 87,7%, siendo la prevalencia de nematodos del 82,2%, la de metacestodos del 44,7% y, en el caso de las formas adultas de cestodos, del 5,9%. Las especies de nematodos encontradas fueron Nematodiroides zembrae (78.8%), Passalurus ambiguus (9,4%) y Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (2,4%), en tanto que las especies de cestodos detectadas fueron Cittotaenia denticulata (5,9%) y Cysticercus pisiformis (44,7%). Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la existencia de una relación positiva entre la intensidad de parasitación de N. zembrae y la presencia de C. pisiformis. The abdominal cavity and digestive organs of 85 Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) from the Altiplano of the Region of Murcia (southeastern Spain) were studied. The overall prevalence of helminths was 87.7%, including nematodes (82.2% of prevalence), metacestodes (44.7%) and adult cestodes (5.9%). Three nematode species were found: Nematodiroides zembrae (78.8%), Passalurus ambiguus (9.4%) and Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (2.4%), while two cestode species were detected: Cittotaenia denticulata (5.9%) and Cysticercus pisiformis (44.7%). Our results show a positive relationship between N. zembrae intensity and the presence of C. pisiformis.

Molecular determination of suspected alveolar echinococcosis requiring surgical treatment in human cases from Poland

In this study five cases of suspected alveolar echinococcosis from Poland in which surgical treatment was needed, previously diagnosed by means of imaging and serological techniques, were analyzed in terms to identify the causative agent. Samples of the parasite tissues taken perioperatively from the liver lesions were used for the histopathological and molecular examinations. The sequences of all isolates were identical to Echinococcus multilocularis; all nad1 sequences have been deposited in GenBank The histopathological examination revealed Passpositive fragments of laminated layers typical for E. multilocularis metacestode. Obtained results confirm that the use of imaging techniques only may be insufficient to diagnose alveococcosis thus the recognition of the zoonosis should base on several procedures; especially valuable are highly sensitive and specific molecular methods.

Changes of interleukin-17 and interleukin-6 in BALB/C mice infected with Echinococcus multilocularis

Objective To observe the dynamic expression of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-6 and pathological features of the BALB/C mice livers infected with Echinococcus multilocularis (Em).Methods BALB/C mice were infected by intraperitoneal injection of a metacestode suspension (experimental mice) or the physiological saline ( control mice ),and the mouse liver samples and the serum were collected.The samples of mouse livers were subjected to Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) staining.The dynamic changes in liver IL-17 and IL-6 expression in BALB/C mice infected with Em were analyzed immuno-histochemically.IL-17 was also determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results At different time points during the course of Em infection,pathological changes were observed in the liver of experimental groups,including inflammatory cell invasion,Kuffer cell proliferation,steatosis,necrosis,the formation of cyst wall,etc.In the experimental groups,the expression of IL-17 was positive at the 3rd month post-infection.There was significant difference in IL-17 between experimental group and control group at the 3rd,4th,6th and 10th month time points (P ＜ 0.05 ).The content of IL-17 was increased since 2nd month.The serum IL-17 contents at the 2nd,3rd,4th,10th groups were significantly higher than in the control group (P ＜ 0.05 ).Conclusion The IL-17 and IL-6 expression in the liver of BALB/C mice infected with Em was increased and kept in a high level during the Em infection,and may result in the immune evasion and host immunopathogenesis injury. The role of OX22− helper T cells in protective immunity to reinfection with Taenia taeniaeformis in rats

Spleen cells (SpC) and mesenteric lymph node cells (MLNC) from F344 donor rats actively immunized by oral inoculation with Taenia taeniaeformis eggs were syngeneically transferred into previously uninfected recipient rats by intravenous injection. Recipient rats were challenged with eggs after cell transfer. The degree of immunity was assessed by counting the number of growing metacestodes (MC) in the liver and compared with that in controls. Transfer of 2 x 10(8) SpC, obtained from donors immunized for ten or more (but not for three or five) days before cell transfer inhibited the establishment of most of MC. There were approximately 86-88% reductions in MC recoveries. SpC (2 x 10(8)) obtained from donors immunized for ten days inhibited the establishment of most of MC in recipient rats when transferred nought, two, or 24 h (but not 48 h) before egg challenge. Functional cells in the immune SpC were helper T cells W3/25+, OX8- and OX22-. However, immune MLNC obtained from donors immunized for three to ten days before cell transfer had no effect on transferring immunity.

Albendazole, a benzimadazole-carbamate anthelmintic, has been shown to effectively cause destruction of the metacestodes of Taenia saginata in calves.
