Neural Abnormalities in Bipolar Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Functional Neuroimaging Studies

IntroductionBipolar I disorder (BD-I) is a chronic and recurrent mood disorder characterized by alternating episodes of depression and mania; it is also associated with substantial morbidity and mortality and with clinically significant functional impairments. While previous studies have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine neural abnormalities associated with BD-I, they have yielded mixed findings, perhaps due to differences in sampling and experimental design, including highly variable mood states at the time of scan.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of the neural basis of BD-I and mania, as measured by fMRI activation studies, and to inform the development of more effective brain-based diagnostic systems and clinical treatments.MethodsWe conducted a large-scale meta-analysis of whole-brain fMRI activation studies that compared participants with BD-I, assessed during a manic episode, to age-matched healthy controls. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive PubMed literature search using two independent coding teams to evaluate primary studies according to pre-established inclusion criteria. We then used multilevel kernel density analysis (MKDA), a well-established, voxel-wise, whole-brain, meta-analytic approach, to quantitatively synthesize all qualifying primary fMRI activation studies of mania. We used ensemble thresholding (p<0.05-0.0001) to minimize cluster size detection bias, and 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations to correct for multiple comparisons.ResultsWe found that participants with BD-I (N=2,042), during an active episode of mania and relative to age-matched healthy controls (N=1,764), exhibit a pattern of significantly (p<0.05-0.0001; FWE-corrected) different activation in multiple brain regions of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia across a variety of experimental tasks.ConclusionsThis study supports the formulation of a robust neural basis for BD-I during manic episodes and advances our understanding of the pattern of abnormal activation in this disorder. These results may inform the development of novel brain-based clinical tools for bipolar disorder such as diagnostic biomarkers, non-invasive brain stimulation, and treatment-matching protocols. Future studies should compare the neural signatures of BD-I to other related disorders to facilitate the development of protocols for differential diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes in patients with BD-I.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

The neural signature of reality-monitoring: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies.

Distinguishing imagination and thoughts from information we perceived from the environment, a process called reality-monitoring, is important in everyday situations. Although reality monitoring seems to overlap with the concept of self-monitoring, which allows one to distinguish self-generated actions or thoughts from those generated by others, the two concepts remain largely separate cognitive domains and their common brain substrates have received little attention. We investigated the brain regions involved in these two cognitive processes and explored the common brain regions they share. To do this, we conducted two separate coordinate-based meta-analyses of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies assessing the brain regions involved in reality- and self-monitoring. Few brain regions survived threshold-free cluster enhancement family-wise multiple comparison correction (p < .05), likely owing to the small number of studies identified. Using uncorrected statistical thresholds recommended by Signed Differential Mapping with Permutation of Subject Images, the meta-analysis of reality-monitoring studies (k = 9 studies including 172 healthy subjects) revealed clusters in the lobule VI of the cerebellum, the right anterior medial prefrontal cortex and anterior thalamic projections. The meta-analysis of self-monitoring studies (k = 12 studies including 192 healthy subjects) highlighted the involvement of a set of brain regions including the lobule VI of the left cerebellum and fronto-temporo-parietal regions. We showed with a conjunction analysis that the lobule VI of the cerebellum was consistently engaged in both reality- and self-monitoring. The current findings offer new insights into the common brain regions underlying reality-monitoring and self-monitoring, and suggest that the neural signature of the self that may occur during self-production should persist in memories.

Disrupted functional connectivity of the brain reward system in substance use problems: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies.

Extensive literature suggests that the brain reward system is crucial in understanding the neurobiology of substance use disorders. However, evidence of reliable deficits in functional connectivity across studies on substance use problems remains limited. Therefore, a voxel-wise seed-based meta-analysis using brain regions of the reward system as seeds of interest was conducted on 96 studies representing 5757 subjects with substance use problems. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex exhibited hyperconnectivity with the ventral striatum and hypoconnectivity with the amygdala and hippocampus. The executive striatum showed hyperconnectivity with the motor thalamus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and hypoconnectivity with the anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula. Finally, the limbic striatum was found to be hyperconnected to the orbitofrontal cortex and hypoconnected to the precuneus compared with healthy subjects. The current study provided meta-analytical evidence of deficient functional connectivity between brain regions of the reward system and cortico-striato-thalamocortical loops in addiction. These results are consistent with deficits in motivation and habit formation occurring in addiction, and they highlight alterations in brain regions involved in socio-emotional processing and attention salience.

The neural activities of different emotion carriers and their similarities and differences: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies

<p id=C6>Emotion recognition has always been a hot topic in psychology. Although some studies have explored the brain mechanisms of dynamic facial expressions, dynamic bodily expressions and emotional voices, empirical studies have their own inevitable defects, which may lead to low statistical test power and effect size and inconsistent results. In addition, the existing meta-analyses of the three emotion carriers still have some deficiencies. Therefore, at present, the overall understanding of the three emotion carriers is relatively incomplete, and the commonness and differences of neural mechanisms among different emotion carriers were still poorly known. So, based on the background of high ecological validity, this study adopted the meta-analysis technique based on large-scale data synthesis method to overcome the above shortcomings. First, three separated activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses were used to identify the brain regions activated by each emotion pattern, and then conjunction and contrast analysis of these activation maps were used to assess common and unique neural activity between the three emotion carriers. It is the first time that meta-analysis is used to explore the brain mechanism of dynamic bodily expressions, and it is also the first time that meta-analysis is used to explore the similarities and differences of neural activity among three emotion carriers: dynamic facial expressions, dynamic bodily expressions and emotional voices, and further improves the overall understanding of the neural mechanisms of dynamic facial expressions and emotional voices by previous meta-analyses. The results of single meta-analysis showed that the brain regions of dynamic facial expressions included superior frontal gyrus (SFG), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), precentral gyrus (PG), inferior parietal lobule (IPL), middle occipital gyrus (MOG), inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), fusiform gyrus (FG), superior temporal gyrus (STG), middle temporal gyrus (MTG), inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), cerebellum, amygdala, lentiform nucleus (LN) and insula. Dynamic bodily expressions caused activation of the middle occipital gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, fusiform gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, cuneus, lingual gyrus (LING), cerebellum, and parahippocampal gyrus. The activation of emotional voices was concentrated in the middle frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, precentral gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, heschl’s gyrus (HG), insula, amygdala and caudate nucleus (CN). Conjunction analysis suggested that the left middle temporal gyrus and the right superior temporal gyrus were activated by three emotion carrier across the modalities. The results of the contrast analysis proved that the visual stimuli was more advantaged than the auditory stimuli, especially the dynamic facial expressions, the dynamic bodily expressions also played an important role. However, the emotional voices had their own uniqueness. In sum, these findings validate, support, and extend the existing neural models of the three emotion carriers, revealing a central, universal region of the emotional processing, but with each emotion carrier relying on its own reliable specific neural circuits. This study provides consistent results across studies for researchers of emotional problems, and representative reference coordinate points for future region of interest (ROI) analysis, which is conducive to propose and test hypotheses of future researches, and also is conducive to the identification and neural regulation of patients with emotional disorders. Future researches should further validate and extend these findings to explore the neural mechanisms of emotional processing at different ages and their similarities and differences. In addition, it is necessary to study the brain mechanism of each emotion type and the similarity and difference of neural activity of each emotion in different carriers in the case of sufficient data. Examining the connection of different brain regions, and the different functions of a brain region also is necessary. Meanwhile, it is essential to focus on the neural basis of dynamic bodily expressions.

Abnormal brain activity in nonsuicidal self-injury: a coordinate-based activation likelihood meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies.

The high prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in youths demonstrates a substantial population-level burden on society. NSSI is often associated with emotional and social skill deficits. To date, several studies have aimed to identify the underlying neural mechanism of those deficits in NSSI by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, their conclusions display poor consistency. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis using activation likelihood estimation (ALE) for fMRI data based on emotional and cognitive tasks to clarify the underlying neural processing deficits of NSSI. We searched for MRI studies of NSSI in the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases. We identified significant foci for the included studies and conducted two ALE meta-analyses as follows: (i)activation for the NSSI contrast healthy control group and (ii) deactivation for the NSSI contrast healthy controls. Considering the diverse sex composition of study participants and possible bias from one large sample study, we conducted sensitivity analyses for the meta-analysis. Nine studies comprising 359 participants were included, and the results demonstrated substantial activation in NSSI patients compared with healthy controls in two clusters located in the right medial frontal gyrus extending to the rostral anterior cingulate and the left inferior frontal gyrus extending to the insula. The results suggest that individuals with NSSI show brain activity alterations that underpin their core symptoms, including poor emotional regulation and reward processing deficits. Our findings provide new insights into the neural mechanism of NSSI, which may serve as functional biomarkers for developing effective diagnosis and therapeutic interventions for these patients.

Establishing a role of the semantic control network in social cognitive processing: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies

The contribution and neural basis of cognitive control is under-specified in many prominent models of socio-cognitive processing. Important outstanding questions include whether there are multiple, distinguishable systems underpinning control and whether control is ubiquitously or selectively engaged across different social behaviours and task demands. Recently, it has been proposed that the regulation of social behaviours could rely on brain regions specialised in the controlled retrieval of semantic information, namely the anterior inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal gyrus. Accordingly, we investigated for the first time whether the neural activation commonly found in social functional neuroimaging studies extends to these ‘semantic control’ regions. We conducted five coordinate-based meta-analyses to combine results of 499 fMRI/PET experiments and identified the brain regions consistently involved in semantic control, as well as four social abilities: theory of mind, trait inference, empathy and moral reasoning. This allowed an unprecedented parallel review of the neural networks associated with each of these cognitive domains. The results confirmed that the anterior left IFG region involved in semantic control is reliably engaged in all four social domains. This supports the hypothesis that social cognition is partly regulated by the neurocognitive system underpinning semantic control.

A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies on developmental dyslexia across European orthographies: the ADOD model

ABSTRACT According to the “classic” and the “new” model, developmental dyslexia (DD) is associated with dysfunctions of the left temporoparietal (TP), ventral occipitotemporal (vOT) and frontal brain circuits. However, these models make different anatomo-functional predictions about the effects of age and orthographic depth on the neural correlates of DD. To test the influence of age and orthographic depth and their interaction on the neurobiology of reading we meta-analyzed 34 fMRI studies by combining the CluB and the GingerALE methods. Our meta-analytic results challenged both models and allowed us to generate a refined neurocognitive framework called the “Anatomo-functional, Developmental, and Orthographic Depth (ADOD) model of DD”. The ADOD model describes the interacting effects of age and orthography on the neurobiology of DD and suggests brand new conceptions on the role of the left TP cortex in reading together with a subtler parcellation of the vOT areas according to a rostro-caudal gradient.

A connectivity model of the anatomic substrates underlying ideomotor apraxia: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies

BackgroundPatients with ideomotor apraxia (IMA) present with selective impairments in higher-order motor cognition and execution without damage to any motor or sensory pathways. Although extensive research has been conducted to determine the regions of interest (ROIs) underlying these unique impairments, previous models are heterogeneous and may be further clarified based on their structural connectivity, which has been far less described. ObjectiveThe goal of this research is to propose an anatomically concise network model for the neurophysiologic basis of IMA, specific to the voluntary pantomime, imitation and tool execution, based on intrinsic white matter connectivity. MethodsWe utilized meta-analytic software to identify relevant ROIs in ideomotor apraxia as reported in the literature based on functional neuroimaging data with healthy participants. After generating an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) of relevant ROIs, cortical parcellations overlapping the ALE were used to construct an anatomically precise model of anatomic substrates using the parcellation scheme outlined by the Human Connectome Project (HCP). Deterministic tractography was then performed on 25 randomly selected, healthy HCP subjects to determine the structural connectivity underlying the identified ROIs. Results10 task-based fMRI studies met our inclusion criteria and the ALE analysis demonstrated 6 ROIs to constitute the IMA network: SCEF, FOP4, MIP, AIP, 7AL, and 7PC. These parcellations represent a fronto-parietal network consisting mainly of intra-parietal, U-shaped association fibers (40%) and long-range inferior fronto-occipital fascicle (IFOF) fibers (50%). These findings support previous functional models based on dual-stream motor processing. ConclusionWe constructed a preliminary model demonstrating the underlying structural interconnectedness of anatomic substrates involved in higher-order motor functioning which is seen impaired in IMA. Our model provides support for previous dual-stream processing frameworks discussed in the literature, but further clarification is necessary with voxel-based lesion studies of IMA to further refine these findings.

Brain Motor Network Changes in Parkinson's Disease: Evidence from Meta-Analytic Modeling.

BackgroundMotor‐related brain activity in Parkinson's disease has been investigated in a multitude of functional neuroimaging studies, which often yielded apparently conflicting results. Our previous meta‐analysis did not resolve inconsistencies regarding cortical activation differences in Parkinson's disease, which might be related to the limited number of studies that could be included. Therefore, we conducted a revised meta‐analysis including a larger number of studies. The objectives of this study were to elucidate brain areas that consistently show abnormal motor‐related activation in Parkinson's disease and to reveal their functional connectivity profiles using meta‐analytic approaches.MethodsWe applied a quantitative meta‐analysis of functional neuroimaging studies testing limb movements in Parkinson's disease comprising data from 39 studies, of which 15 studies (285 of 571 individual patients) were published after the previous meta‐analysis. We also conducted meta‐analytic connectivity modeling to elucidate the connectivity profiles of areas showing abnormal activation.ResultsWe found consistent motor‐related underactivation of bilateral posterior putamen and cerebellum in Parkinson's disease. Primary motor cortex and the supplementary motor area also showed deficient activation, whereas cortical regions localized directly anterior to these areas expressed overactivation. Connectivity modeling revealed that areas showing decreased activation shared a common pathway through the posterior putamen, whereas areas showing increased activation were connected to the anterior putamen.ConclusionsDespite conflicting results in individual neuroimaging studies, this revised meta‐analytic approach identified consistent patterns of abnormal motor‐related activation in Parkinson's disease. The distinct patterns of decreased and increased activity might be determined by their connectivity with different subregions of the putamen. © 2021 The Authors. Heightened degree connectivity of the striatum in obsessive-compulsive disorder induced by symptom provocation

BackgroundNeurosurgical intervention studies have provided direct evidence that the ventral striatum/nucleus accumbens (NAc) mediates symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies using symptom provocation revealed no striatal activation differences, and the existing studies reporting hyperactivity found abnormalities in dorsal but not ventral striatal subdivisions. Resting-state neuroimaging evidence holds that corticostriatal areas are more connected both locally and to distant regions, but the functional inferences to be drawn from these altered network characteristics regarding the present experience of OCD symptoms remain limited. MethodsThe present study tested whether symptom provocation induces abnormally high striatal network connectivity using two independent datasets of unmedicated patients with OCD. One study (14 patients, 14 matched controls) required passive viewing of OC-related, emotionally aversive and neutral pictures, the other (21 patients, 21 controls) involved self-referential evaluation of the same picture types, as well as distraction from these stimuli (engagement in a simple task). ResultsHeightened local connectivity of the dorsal striatum occurred during passive viewing of briefly presented OC-related pictures in patients, however group differences were also observed in a neutral control condition. In contrast, distracted symptom provocation selectively yielded local connectivity differences of the ventral striatum, as heightened NAc connectivity to its immediate neighborhood was exclusively observed when OC-related pictures were accompanied by concurrent task demands. LimitationsSmall samples sizes. ConclusionsIn moderately affected patients with OCD, symptom provocation induces a discrete, condition-specific network abnormality anchored in NAc, the location targeted by deep brain stimulation for refractory patients with OCD.

Association between Anterior Cingulate Neurochemical Concentration and Individual Differences in Hypnotizability.

Hypnosis is the oldest form of Western psychotherapy and a powerful evidence-based treatment for numerous disorders. Hypnotizability is variable between individuals; however, it is a stable trait throughout adulthood, suggesting that neurophysiological factors may underlie hypnotic responsiveness. One brain region of particular interest in functional neuroimaging studies of hypnotizability is the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Here, we examined the relationships between the neurochemicals, GABA, and glutamate, in the ACC and hypnotizability in healthy individuals. Participants underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) session, whereby T1-weighted anatomical and MEGA-PRESS spectroscopy scans were acquired. Voxel placement over the ACC was guided by a quantitative meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies of hypnosis. Hypnotizability was assessed using the Hypnotic Induction Profile (HIP), and self-report questionnaires to assess absorption (TAS), dissociation (DES), and negative affect were completed. ACC GABA concentration was positively associated with HIP scores such that the higher the GABA concentration, the more hypnotizable an individual. An exploratory analysis of questionnaire subscales revealed a negative relationship between glutamate and the absorption and imaginative involvement subscale of the DES. These results provide a putative neurobiological basis for individual differences in hypnotizability and can inform our understanding of treatment response to this growing psychotherapeutic tool.

Activation of Bilateral Secondary Somatosensory Cortex With Right Hand Touch Stimulation: A Meta-Analysis of Functional Neuroimaging Studies.

Background: Brain regions involved in processing somatosensory information have been well documented through lesion, post-mortem, animal, and more recently, structural and functional neuroimaging studies. Functional neuroimaging studies characterize brain activation related to somatosensory processing; yet a meta-analysis synthesis of these findings is currently lacking and in-depth knowledge of the regions involved in somatosensory-related tasks may also be confounded by motor influences.Objectives: Our Activation Likelihood Estimate (ALE) meta-analysis sought to quantify brain regions that are involved in the tactile processing of the right (RH) and left hands (LH) separately, with the exclusion of motor related activity.Methods: The majority of studies (n = 41) measured activation associated with RH tactile stimulation. RH activation studies were grouped into those which conducted whole-brain analyses (n = 29) and those which examined specific regions of interest (ROI; n = 12). Few studies examined LH activation, though all were whole-brain studies (N = 7).Results: Meta-analysis of brain activation associated with RH tactile stimulation (whole-brain studies) revealed large clusters of activation in the left primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and bilaterally in the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2; including parietal operculum) and supramarginal gyrus (SMG), as well as the left anterior cingulate. Comparison between findings from RH whole-brain and ROI studies revealed activation as expected, but restricted primarily to S1 and S2 regions. Further, preliminary analyses of LH stimulation studies only, revealed two small clusters within the right S1 and S2 regions, likely limited due to the small number of studies. Contrast analyses revealed the one area of overlap for RH and LH, was right secondary somatosensory region.Conclusions: Findings from the whole-brain meta-analysis of right hand tactile stimulation emphasize the importance of taking into consideration bilateral activation, particularly in secondary somatosensory cortex. Further, the right parietal operculum/S2 region was commonly activated for right and left hand tactile stimulation, suggesting a lateralized pattern of somatosensory activation in right secondary somatosensory region. Implications for further research and for possible differences in right and left hemispheric stroke lesions are discussed.

Neural correlates of interference resolution in the multi-source interference task: a meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies

BackgroundInterference resolution refers to cognitive control processes enabling one to focus on task-related information while filtering out unrelated information. But the exact neural areas, which underlie a specific cognitive task on interference resolution, are still equivocal. The multi-source interference task (MSIT), as a particular cognitive task, is a well-established experimental paradigm used to evaluate interference resolution. Studies combining the MSIT with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that the MSIT evokes the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and cingulate–frontal–parietal cognitive-attentional networks. However, these brain areas have not been evaluated quantitatively and these findings have not been replicated.MethodsIn the current study, we firstly report a voxel-based meta-analysis of functional brain activation associated with the MSIT so as to identify the localization of interference resolution in such a specific cognitive task. Articles on MSIT-related fMRI published between 2003 and July 2017 were eligible. The electronic databases searched included PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar. Differential BOLD activation patterns between the incongruent and congruent condition were meta-analyzed in anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping software.ResultsRobustness meta-analysis indicated that two significant activation clusters were shown to have reliable functional activity in comparisons between incongruent and congruent conditions. The first reliable activation cluster, which included the dACC, medial prefrontal cortex, supplementary motor area, replicated the previous MSIT-related fMRI study results. Furthermore, we found another reliable activation cluster comprising areas of the right insula, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right lenticular nucleus-putamen, which were not typically discussed in previous MSIT-related fMRI studies.ConclusionsThe current meta-analysis study presents the reliable brain activation patterns on MSIT. These findings suggest that the cingulate-frontal-striatum network and right insula may allow control demands to resolve interference on MSIT. These results provide new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying interference resolution.

Abnormal brain activation during threatening face processing in schizophrenia: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies

Impairment of face perception in schizophrenia is a core aspect of social cognitive dysfunction. This impairment is particularly marked in threatening face processing. Identifying reliable neural correlates of the impairment of threatening face processing is crucial for targeting more effective treatments. However, neuroimaging studies have not yet obtained robust conclusions. Through comprehensive literature search, twenty-one whole brain datasets were included in this meta-analysis. Using seed-based d-Mapping, in this voxel-based meta-analysis, we aimed to: 1) establish the most consistent brain dysfunctions related to threating face processing in schizophrenia; 2) address task-type heterogeneity in this impairment; 3) explore the effect of potential demographic or clinical moderator variables on this impairment. Main meta-analysis indicated that patients with chronic schizophrenia demonstrated attenuated activations in limbic emotional system along with compensatory over-activation in medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) during threatening faces processing. Sub-task analyses revealed under-activations in right amygdala and left fusiform gyrus in both implicit and explicit tasks. The remaining clusters were found to be differently involved in different types of tasks. Moreover, meta-regression analyses showed brain abnormalities in schizophrenia were partly modulated by age, gender, medication and severity of symptoms. Our results highlighted breakdowns in limbic-MPFC circuit in schizophrenia, suggesting general inability to coordinate and contextualize salient threat stimuli. These findings provide potential targets for neurotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions for schizophrenia.

Illusory limb movements activate different brain networks than imposed limb movements: an ALE meta-analysis

Proprioceptive information allows us to perform smooth coordinated movements by constantly updating us with knowledge of the position of our limbs in space. How this information is combined and processed to form conscious perceptions of limb position is still relatively unknown. Several functional neuroimaging studies have attempted to tease out the brain areas responsible for proprioceptive processing in the human brain. Yet there still exists some disagreement in the specific brain regions involved. In order to consolidate the current knowledge in the field, we performed a systematic review of the literature and an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies of proprioception. We identified 12 studies that used a proprioceptive stimulus of the upper extremity for ALE analysis (n=141 participants). Two types of stimuli (illusion of movement induced through muscle tendon vibration and passive/imposed movements) were found to be most commonly used to probe proprioceptive networks in the brain. ALE analysis of these two stimulus types revealed that both were associated with activation in the left precentral, postcentral, and anterior cingulate gyri. Interestingly, different patterns of activation were also observed between illusions of movement and imposed movement. In the left hemisphere, imposed movements resulted in activations that were more inferior in the post-central gyrus. In the right hemisphere, imposed movements resulted in two clusters of activation in the inferior aspect of the precentral gyrus and the hand area of the post-central gyrus, while illusions of movement resulted in a single cluster of activation in the inferior parietal lobule. These results suggest that illusions of movement without limb displacement may activate different brain areas compared with actual limb displacement. Careful consideration should be made in future studies when selecting a proprioceptive stimulus to probe these brain networks.

Common and distinct brain regions processing multisensory bodily signals for peripersonal space and body ownership

We take the feeling that our body belongs to us for granted. However, recent research has shown that it is possible to alter the subjective sensation of body ownership (BO) by manipulating multisensory bodily inputs. Several frontal and parietal regions are known to specifically process multisensory cues presented close to the body, i.e., within the peripersonal space (PPS). It has been proposed that these PPS fronto-parietal regions also underlie BO. However, most previous studies investigated the brain mechanisms of either BO or of PPS processing separately and by using a variety of paradigms. Here, we conducted an extensive meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies to investigate PPS and BO processing in humans in order to: a) assess quantitatively where each one of these functions was individually processed in the brain; b) identify whether and where these processes shared common or engaged distinct brain mechanisms; c) characterize these areas in terms of whole-brain co-activation networks and functions, respectively. We identified (i) a bilateral PPS network including superior parietal, temporo-parietal and ventral premotor regions and (ii) a BO network including posterior parietal cortex (right intraparietal sulcus, IPS; and left IPS and superior parietal lobule, SPL), right ventral premotor cortex, and the left anterior insula. Co-activation maps related to both PPS and BO encompassed largely overlapping fronto-parietal networks, but whereas the PPS network was more frequently associated with sensorimotor tasks, the BO network was rather associated with attention and awareness tasks. Finally, the conjunction analysis showed that (iii) PPS and BO tasks anatomically overlapped only in two clusters located in the left parietal cortex (dorsally at the intersection between the SPL, the IPS and area 2 and ventrally between areas 2 and IPS). Distinct activations were located for PPS at the temporo-parietal junction and for BO in the anterior insula. These results in PPS and BO and provide evidence-based insight about the overlap of the two processes in the IPS region and the extensive connectivity between the two associated co-activation networks. They also show significant dissociations, with PPS fronto-parietal areas located more proximal to the central sulcus than BO areas. Such anatomical distinction may also reflect the different functions of the two processes, whereby PPS areas underlie a multisensory-motor interface for body-objects interaction and BO areas being involved in bodily awareness and self-consciousness.
