AbstractThe heaviest precipitation in narrow rainbands situated along surface cold fronts has been observed on radar PPI displays to be organized into regularly spaced small mesoscale elements having shapes which are roughly elliptical. The long axes of the ellipses are essentially parallel to each other and oriented at an angle of about 35° to the front.
