Singular Point, Organizing Center and Acupuncture Point

A hypothesis is proposed on the nature of acupuncture point and organizing center, the role of meridian system in growth regulation, and the mechanism of acupuncture. Both organizing centers and acupuncture points have low electric resistance. The low electric resistance is related to the distribution of gap junction and thus intercellular communication. Some acupuncture points may be organizing centers. The meridian system is important in coordination and regulation of morphogenesis. The properties of organizing centers and acupuncture points can be explained in view of singular point. Coupling and oscillation may underlie the mechanism of acupuncture as well as growth regulation.

Prevalence of tricuspid and pulmonary regurgitation diagnosed by Doppler in apparently healthy women. Possible influence on their physical performance?

Ninety-five apparently healthy, non-athletic women aged 24-65 (mean 44) years were screened by Doppler echocardiography for the presence of tricuspid and pulmonary regurgitation (TR and PR). An Irex Meridian system was used. TR was diagnosed in the presence of a pansystolic regurgitant jet into the right atrium with a maximal velocity of greater than 1.5 m s-1. Regurgitant flow throughout diastole was diagnostic for PR. Right-sided regurgitation was found in 43 women (Group 1), 22 with TR, 12 with PR, and nine with combined TR and PR. The remaining 52 women were studied as a control group (Group 2). Group 1 had a significantly larger heart size on X-ray (P less than 0.025) and left ventricular end systolic diameter assessed from M-mode echocardiography (P less than 0.05) than did Group 2. The possible clinical significance of the valvular regurgitation was assessed by using a standardized symptom-limited exercise test on an ergometer bicycle. In Group 1, the mean cumulative work achieved was 7008 (+/- 1630) kpm, and in Group 2 6363 (+/- 1633) kpm (P less than 0.05). TR and PR occurring in otherwise healthy women does not seem to impair physical exercise performance.

The Use of Sonopuncture in Some Common Clinical Syndromes

The application of an ultrasound stimulus to the acupuncture meridian system has been found safe and effective in many common clinical entities for which no such treatment exists. Comparison of 150 treatments with sonopuncture compare favorably with 900 cases treated with needle acupuncture. The method offers several advantages to the Western physician — familiarity with the equipment, greater patient acceptability, and a wider treatment surface than needles. Treatment regimens for cervical and low back pain syndromes and dysmennorrhea are presented.

A two-circle goniometer for establishing angular coordinates on spherical specimens

The two-circle goniometer described precisely marks an angular coordinate system of meridians and parallels on the surface of spherical rock specimens. Physical property data obtained with respect to this frame of reference then can be accurately transferred on to a Schmidt (equal area) net and contoured with isolines to give the symmetry and magnitude of anisotropy of the physical property.

Cadastral Surveying in Alaska

New methods are being used to facilitate the task of surveying public lands in Alaska. These methods include the computation of positions of corner monuments so they can be positioned from triangulation when necessary. The description of a tract of land, according to the rectangular system of base lines and principal meridians, can be written if its position on a topographic map can be determined. The use of aerial photographs, electronic distance measuring devices, and precise theodolites aid in the setting of corner monuments and the meander measurements of bodies of water. The helicopter and float plane provide transport for field parties, and two-way radios permit communication. Intersection of positions from control stations sometimes can be used in place of pulling the chain over difficult terrain. Electronic computers reduce the time and labor of computations for the surveys. Grants of land to the state will be in larger parcels than those given to the older states. This may postpone indefinitely the need for the detailed survey of townships and sections.

The cell wall of Valonia ventricosa has been studied in detail by means of X-ray diffraction photographs and the polarizing microscope. It consists of layers in which the cellulose chains in any one layer are inclined to those in the preceding and subsequent layers at an angle which is on the average rather less than a right angle. The chains of one set of layers form a system of meridians to the wall, while those of the other set build a system of spirals closing down on the two ‘poles' defined by the meridians. The development of the rhizoids is associated with regions of the wall adjacent to the poles of the spiral. The plane of spacing, 6-1 A., of the cellulose crystallites is, roughly speaking, confined within an angle of about 60 ° to the wall surface. The path of the cellulose spiral is that of a logarithmic (equiangular) spiral described on the surface of a sphere or prelate spheroid.
