This publication is designed to help family carers and support staff to develop their understanding of the emotional and mental health needs of young people. The workshop was developed in response to the recommendations of an inquiry carried out by the authors (Count us In, FPLD 2002) and was funded by a research grant from the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities. The original study set out to understand how family carers identify and respond to changes in emotional and mental well-being of young people with profound and multiple disabilities. This current workshop was developed by family carers and professionals at the University of Dundee. Each of the five sessions has a theme: introduction; change and transition; health issues; loss and bereavement; and supportive therapies. The sessions encourage discussion and the exchange of information giving. Included in the pack are the usual guidance for running the sessions, information slides, video clips, exercise sheets and a resource list.
