Compound hemizygotes for red-green colour vision defects

Franceschetti has calculated that 0.12 per cent of men might be compound hemizygotes for red-green blindness. A new calculation suggests that 0.1338 per cent of men in Scotland might be such hemizygotes. A prediction of the possible types of colour vision defects of such men can be made and is given in this paper. Three previously published pedigrees are re-interpreted, in which possible hemizygotes occur, and it is pointed out that the colour vision of these men would accord with the predictions made, as would that of the two compound hemizygote brothers reported by Walls and Mathews.

III.—Recent Archaeological Research in Scotland

In this communication, which is submitted in response to the invitation sent by your President to the Council of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland asking them to nominate one of their Fellows to report on recent archaeological research in Scotland, I propose briefly to review the recent discoveries and developments that have taken place in our endeavours to unravel the story of prehistoric and later man in Scotland. I shall begin at the earlier periods, and, working forward, indicate the progress we have made, the problems we see before us, and the manner in which we have dealt with the various questions as they arose.

UNTIL the summer of 1926 no indubitable trace of palæolithic man had been found in Scotland, if the Azilian remains of the west coast and the Tardenoisian flints scattered throughout the country be regarded as belonging to an intermediate period between the old and new stone ages. The persistent absence of paleolithic evidences has generally been ascribed either to the presence of an ice-sheet covering Scotland at a date long after such Arctic conditions had disappeared in England and Wales and to the con sequent non-presence of human beings, or to the erasure of traces of palheolithic humanity deposited in a period of interglacial mildness by a later recrudescence of the ice-sheet.

XXIV. A statement by the Lord Chancellor of Scotland upon the subject of an Anglo-Scottish Alliance. September 10, 1588

This is a copy, in a contemporary clerkly hand, of an account of a statement upon the subject of an Anglo-Scottish alliance made to Robert Ashby, the representative of Elizabeth in Scotland, by Sir John Maitland, the Lord Chancellor of Scotland, a brother of the famous Maitland of Lethington and perhaps the most influential man in Scotland at this time. The account was probably sent to Elizabeth or to some one of her privy councillors by Ashby in one of his letters, but the original of it appears to be missing. This copy is endorsed by Sir Christopher Hatton.

ONE may now inquire into the reason why cinerary urns, with their contained ashes, and short cists, enclosing bodies which had been buried in a bent or stooping attitude, should be associated with the men of the Bronze Age. The first and most important is the presence of objects made of bronze. In the 144 localities under analysis in which interments ascribed to the Bronze Age have been examined, bronze articles were found in thirty-four directly associated with the interments. In four of these the bronze was along with objects made of gold. In seven other interments of the same character gold ornaments without bronze were present. The men of this period were, therefore, workers in gold also; and as it has been, and indeed still can be, mined in Scotland, it is not unlikely that the ornaments had been wrought from native metal. Additional proof that the burials in short cists, and after cremation in cinerary urns, both belonged to the same period, and were practised by the same people, is furnished by the presence of articles of bronze and gold in both groups of interment.

Early Man in Scotland

IN Scotland, as in other countries, man existed before the time of written history. The conditions under which his remains are found, and the works which he has left behind him, provide the data for determining their age, not absolutely or capable of being expressed in numbers of years, but relatively to each other.

Notes on a ‶shell mound″ at Tongue Ferry, Sutherland

It will be readily admitted by those who have been following the general results of archaeological research, that the investigation of those shell mounds left by the hand of man in Scotland has not led to such important conclusions as the study of similar deposits in Denmark. Doubtless this may be partly accounted for by the fact that these accumulations occur on a much larger scale in Denmark, and are more richly charged with relics of man’s handiwork. The evidence obtained points to the conclusion that the Danish shell mounds or ‶kitchen middens″ belong to some part of the neolithic or new stone age. But if we ransack the Transactions of the Antiquarian Society of Scotland to see what has been done in connection with this subject in our own country, the results are not quite so satisfactory. An unbiassed reader would be apt to infer that few of the shell mounds date back to neolithic time. In some cases the evidence in support of this contention can hardly be said to be conclusive. Indeed, one is almost tempted to put the question: Is there in the northern Highlands a shell mound of undoubted neolithic age? If so, where is it, and what is the evidence in proof of it? This line of research was suggested to us by a recent examination of the contents of an ancient shell mound on the western shore of the Kyle of Tongue, not far to the north of the ferry house. In the
