Levels of Heavy Metals in Some Commercial Fish Species Captured from the Black Sea and Mediterranean Coast of Turkey

The distribution of some heavy metals in the muscle tissue of Merlangius merlangus (whiting), Mullus barbatus (red mullet), Engraulis encrasicholus (anchovy) from Black and Mediterranean Seas were studied. The highest Al (95.313 microg/g dw), Mn (1.390 microg/g dw), Zn (25.416 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in E. encrasicholus from Black Sea; the highest Li (3.200 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in E. encrasicholus from Mediterranean Sea; the highest Cd (1.685 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in M. merlangus from Mediterranean Sea; the highest Ni (1.363 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in M. merlangus from Black Sea; the highest Pb (0.727 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in M. barbatus from Black Sea and the highest Cr (1.893 microg/g dw), Fe (21.901 microg/g dw) concentration was detected in M. barbatus from Mediterranean Sea.

Ciplakastacus gen. nov., a primitive genus of Leptastacidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey

Both sexes of Ciplakastacus mersinensis gen. et sp. nov. (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Leptastacidae) are described in detail based on intertidal material collected from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey (Mersin Province). Plesiomorphic character states displayed by the antenna and P1–P2 indicate Ciplakastacus diverged before the crown group Leptastacidae diversified. The new genus is placed in a basal clade (currently encompassing Archileptastacus and Meloriastacus) defined by eight synapomorphies: (1) caudal ramus with strongly developed seta I flanked by two elongate spinules; (2) caudal ramus with posteriorly directed spinous outgrowth of outer distal corner; (3) caudal ramus seta III vestigial; (4) P5 exopod and baseoendopod forming single plate in both sexes; (5) P2–P4 exp‐3 with one outer spine; (6) dorsal posterior margin of anal somite bilaterally serrate; (7) rostrum triangular or bell‐shaped, and (8) sexually dimorphic ornamentation on the anal somite. Within this clade Ciplakastacus appears most closely related to Meloriastacus on account of the shared presence of the extremely elongate second antennulary segment, an allobasis on the antenna, the strongly reduced accessory seta on the maxillipedal endopod, the subcylindrical sternal process between the maxillipeds and P1, and paired laterodorsal, posteriorly directed, serrate extensions on the anal somite. Both genera can be distinguished from each other by P5 morphology (both sexes), armature of P4 enp‐2 and abdominal hyaline frill structure. The phylogenetic relationships between the basal taxa of the Leptastacidae are briefly outlined.

The frequency and medical effects of consanguineous marriages in Antalya, Turkey.

We investigated 2604 marriages in Antalya, a region in the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The 1020 urban and 1584 rural families included in the study were randomly selected and interviewed at their homes by one of the authors. The total consanguinity was 35.2%, rates being 39.6 and 28.3% for rural and urban areas, respectively. The frequency of consanguinity in different age groups did not vary whereas level of education of the women appeared to have a negative correlation. Family pressure and love were stated as the main reasons for marrying with a relative. Differences were observed between consanguineous and non-consanguineous marriages in sterility, infant death, spontaneous abortion, child death and congenital malformations, these being significantly higher in consanguineous matings. Data from similar Turkish studies are also presented and discussed.

Aplysia dactylomela: an alien opisthobranch in the Mediterranean

Aplysia dactylomela is widely distributed in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, but has not been recorded in the Mediterranean. Recently, underwater photographs of this species from the eastern Mediterranean were posted on Internet forums. The Mediterranean coasts of Turkey were screened for this species and two alive individuals were encountered. This study constitutes the first record of this species from the Turkish coastline and provides enough evidence that Aplysia dactylomela is spreading in the Levant Basin.

Sources and source regions effecting the aerosol composition of the Eastern Mediterranean

Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to deduce the aerosol sources at a rural site on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, using sample collected between February 1992 and December 1993. Approximately 600 daily aerosol samples were collected and 40 elements and compounds were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, ion chromatography and colorimetry. Seven factors were identified with PMF, namely local dust, Saharan dust, sea salt, long range transport, smelter, arsenic and fertilizer factors. The non-parametric bootstrapped potential source contribution function (PSCF) was then used to help identify likely locations of the regional sources of pollution. Besides, explained variance, enrichment factors, seasonal variation of G-score values and back trajectories were used to define the source regions of the factors. Results demonstrated that there are major potential source areas, for the pollution-derived component in aerosol mass, on the Aegean coast, Northwest Turkey, Balkan countries, Ukraine and regions located northern part of Ukraine.

A new record of the invasive Red Sea mussel Brachidontes pharaonis (Fischer P., 1870) (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) from the Turkish coasts

A specimen of the invasive mytilid mussel Brachidontes pharaonis (Fischer P., 1870) was collected on 18 April 2007 in Karaburun Peninsula, Izmir. This record represents the northernmost occurrence of the species along the Aegean coast of Turkey. Information on the distribution of the species along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey is provided.

Precipitation Chemistry as an Indicator of Urban Air Quality in Mersin, North-Eastern Mediterranean Region

The chemical composition of precipitation in the city of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey has been studied. Spatial and temporal variability of rainwater constituents have been determined from samples collected at two central and two suburban stations for the December 2003–May 2005 period. A total of 246 samples covering all precipitation events were analyzed to determine pH, conductivity, as well as major anion (Cl−, $${\text{NO}}_3^ - $$ , $${\text{SO}}_4^{2 - } $$ ); major cation (H+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, $${\text{NH}}_4^ + $$ ) and formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations. The pH varied within a range of 4.8–8.5, with only 8 out of 246 samples being acidic (pH < 5.6), and the remaining highly alkaline samples being neutralized by either $${\text{NH}}_4^ + $$ in rainwater, or by CaCO3 resulting from wet deposition of atmospheric dust. The volume weighted mean ΣAnion/ΣCation ratio was 0.49. The equivalent concentration of major ionic species followed the order: $${\text{Ca}}^{2 + } > {\text{HCO}}_3^ - > {\text{SO}}_4^{2 - } > {\text{Cl}}^ - > {\text{NH}}_4^ + > {\text{Na}}^ + > {\text{Mg}}^{2 + } > {\text{NO}}_3^ - > {\text{K}}^ + > {\text{H}}^ + $$ . Formaldehyde concentrations varied in the range of 0.01–17.9 μM, and was found to be dependent on precipitation volume. Relatively higher $${\text{NH}}_4^ + $$ , $${\text{SO}}_4^{2 - } $$ , $${\text{NO}}_3^ - $$ and HCHO concentrations, mainly of anthropogenic origin, measured near the city center suggest increased pollution from local anthropogenic sources, e.g., residential heating, industrial and/or traffic emissions. In general, the results of this study suggest local precipitation chemistry is more strongly influenced by natural (mineral dust and marine) sources compared to anthropogenic ones.

A Techno-Economic Analysis of Wind Energy in Southern Turkey

Turkey's total primary energy production covered 33% of the total energy consumption in 2005. It is predicted that this ratio of 33% will decrease further in the coming years. Therefore, Turkey has to make better use of her renewable energy resources, such as wind and solar. Studies show that Iskenderun (36.35°N, 36.10°E), located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, is amongst the possible wind energy generation regions. In the present study, the wind energy potential of the region is statistically analysed based on five year hourly time-series wind-speed data at two different wind-turbine heights. Economically usable power generation is hypothetically analysed for various wind turbines employing a typical year, using a model of quadratic power output function. A life-cycle cost analysis is carried out over a 20-year system lifetime. The wind turbine generators considered are of various nominal powers ranging from 0.6 to 500 kW. It was shown that the wind turbine with the nominal power of 500 kW provided the lowest cost of electricity at $0.15 per kWh. This is very close to $0.13, which is the cost of electricity per kWh from the utility in Turkey. The cost of wind electricity per kWh can be significantly reduced if the components of wind energy systems were exempted from taxes and subsidies were introduced.

An analysis of managerial competency needs in the tourism sector: the case of Turkey

One of the ways of improving organizational performance is to focus on individual performance and to analyze the knowledge and skills needs for effective job performance. Relevant literature suggests that needs should be studied as gaps in competencies. This study reports findings from data relating to the perceptions of middle‐level managers about the importance and current state of managerial competencies in the tourism sector. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey conducted in the hospitality facilities in Antalya, the so‐called capital city of tourism on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Respondents were asked about the importance and also present level of managerial competencies (technical and generic) required for effective job performance. Gaps were measured by subtracting the importance value ascribed to the competency from the value ascribed to the present competency level. The objective of this replication exercise was to adhere as closely as possible to the methodology and instruments used by Agut and Grau to facilitate direct comparison.

Bioaccumulation of Some Heavy Metals in Different Tissues Of Dicentrarchus Labrax L, 1758, Sparus Aurata L, 1758 And Mugil Cephalus L, 1758 From the ÇamlIk Lagoon of the Eastern Cost Of Mediterranean (Turkey)

In this study, bioaccumulation of the heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cd) in the liver, gill, gonad and muscle tissues of Dicentrarchus labrax, Mugil cephalus and Sparus aurata were investigated seasonally. Camlik is the important fisheries lagoon located in The Iskenderun Bay, Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Due to heavy industrial and agricultural activities in the region, the bay has the polluted coastal waters of Turkey. Therefore, the levels of cadmium, zinc, iron were determined in the muscle in each species because of its importance for human consumption and also the liver, gill, gonad were analysed since these organs tend to accumulate metals. Heavy metal levels were found generally higher in the liver and gill than the gonad and muscle tissues in three species; the levels of all metals in a given tissue were generally higher in Mugil cephalus than the other two species. Data collected in this study suggest that Camlik lagoon is affected by a relatively metal pollution. The concentrations of Zn concentrations in the muscle tissues exceeded the acceptable levels for a food source for human consumption and other metals in the edible parts of the investigated fish were in the permissible safety levels for human uses.

Assessment of the collapse mechanisms of tufa deposits

This research assesses the collapse mechanisms of tufa deposits. The city of Antalya, located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, has been settled on tufa deposits. By the end of 1980s, the area behind the tufa cliffs became the site of high-rise residential buildings. Some of these buildings have suffered from foundation instabilities, which have given rise to cracking and fissuring of the walls, and overall tilting. The collapsible behaviour upon loading and/or wetting of some tufa deposits has caused foundation settlement. Voids, bonding of grains and grain properties of the collapsible tufa were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Our studies indicate that the collapse behaviour of tufa is affected mainly by depositional environment and microfabric. Laboratory tests have been performed in order to determine the index properties and the collapse potential of tufa samples. Young tufa deposits near the surface are weakly bonded with thin films of carbonate cement, giving rise to high void ratios. Analysis of geotechnical parameters has shown that the collapse potential of tufa is closely related to the natural void ratio and the amount of cement binding the grains.

Size Distribution of Trace Elements and Major Ions in the Eastern Mediterranean Atmosphere

Size distribution of trace elements is measured at the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, by analyzing hi-vol impactor samples collected between August 1993 and May 1994. Mass median diameters of marine elements are between 4.6 and 5.3 μm, and those of crustal elements are between 3.0 and 3.5 μm. Mass median diameters of crustal elements are 30% smaller in samples impacted by Saharan Dust. Pollution derived elements, As, Cd, Mo, Pb, Se, and Zn have MMD's between 1.25 and 1.01 μm. Although 70–90% of the masses of these elements were associated with particles smaller than 2.1 μm, 10–30% of their mass was associated with coarse particles. Coarse component in concentrations of Cd, Pb, Sb and particulate Hg are due to adsorption of fine anthropogenic particles on coarse crustal aerosol, whereas coarse fraction Zn, As, Se, In, Mo and Au are crustal at Al concentrations > 100 ng m−3. Bromine, Cr, Ni, and V have bimodal distributions. The fine component, which account for approximately 30–40% of their masses are due to anthropogenic sources, whereas the coarse component, which accounts for 30–50% of their masses are due to sea salt for Br, and crustal particles for Cr, Ni, and V.

New observations on live Loculicytheretta pavonia (Brady, 1866) (Ostracoda) from Turkey

Living specimens of the marine ostracode, Loculicytheretta pavonia were found in Iskenderun Bay on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The geographical distribution of this species, which is largely restricted to the Mediterranean Sea, is reviewed. Spherical bodies in the loculi (the latter feature being restricted to females) are tentatively identified as eggs. This new evidence supports the idea that this genus has brood care.

High efficient utilisation of solar energy with newly developed parabolic trough collectors (SOLITEM PTC) for chilling and steam production in a hotel at the Mediterranean coast of Turkey

Parabolic trough collectors are getting introduced into application for solar process steam generation and high efficient solar chilling. SOLITEM GmbH in Aachen develops and produces its PTC 1800 for these applications. The first installation is made in the Iberotel Sarigermepark in Turkey. Energy supply facilitates, so that hotels and hospitals can economically be optimised by additional installations of cogeneration units with micro-turbines. With different systems in hybrid infrastructure, customers can change the operation modes depending on various electricity and fuel prices: solar energy can supply either the steam consumers or the chilling system, or both, supported by steam and electricity from cogeneration plant.

Residents' attitudes toward general and forest-related impacts of tourism: the case of Belek, Antalya

This study investigates residents' attitudes to tourism impacts on forests within the larger framework of economic, social and general environmental impacts. The study site is Belek, a resort town on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, with a high concentration of tourists. The results of the survey indicate that residents have favorable attitudes towards tourism development in the area, but they also show widely held concern for the negative effects of tourism, mainly the impacts on the forests in the area. Moreover, these forest-related negative impacts are not attributed to the tourism activity or the tourist themselves, but to the quality of decision-making by the public authority, which is perceived as failing to exercise sound management and fair judgment in the allocation and use of land. The responses show uniformity related to perceived negative general environmental impacts.

Consanguineous marriages in the province of Antalya, Turkey

To assess the trends in the frequency and the medical effects of consanguinity in the south coast of Turkish population using local and national data in the last 11 years. This cross-sectional study was carried out in Manavgat province, which is a major tourism center on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The authors studied consanguineous marriages in rural and urban population in the Mediterranean coast, Manavgat province, Turkey, via a 1500 random survey sample of married couples. There has been a significant increase in the incidence of consanguineous marriages in rural areas (40.7%) since 1989 in the southern population of Turkey. The results showed that the most frequent type of marriage was between the first cousins. It is found that there is no statistically significant difference between the consanguineous and non-consanguineous marriages in the different age groups. The results were discussed on the basis of educational status, reasons for having consanguineous marriages and the general medical effects as well as with the relation of congenital malformations. The custom of consanguineous unions in the Mediterranean population of Turkey is still extremely high, and preventive measures should be done to decrease its frequency and associated complications.

A statistical analysis of wind power density based on the Weibull and Rayleigh models at the southern region of Turkey

The electric generating capacity of Turkey must be tripled by 2010 to meet Turkey’s electric power consumption, if the annual 8% growth in electric power consumption continues. Turkey has to make use of its renewable energy resources, such as wind and solar, not only to meet the increasing energy demand, but also for environmental reasons. Studies show that Iskenderun (36°35′N; 36°10′E) located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey is amongst the possible wind energy generation regions. In the present study, the wind energy potential of the region is statistically analyzed based on 1-year measured hourly time-series wind speed data. The probability density distributions are derived from time-series data and distributional parameters are identified. Two probability density functions are fitted to the measured probability distributions on a monthly basis. The wind energy potential of the location is studied based on the Weibull and the Rayleigh models.

Sexual dimorphisms in radula of Conomurex persicus (Gastropoda: Strombidae) in the Mediterranean Sea

Dentition characters of Conomurex persicus found along the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey were analyzed. For the analyses of radula, 289 individuals (34 adult males, 140 adult females and the remainder juve- niles) were examined. Male and female individuals of the species had different numbers of radular cusps. The radula of the taenioglossate type was made up of two marginal teeth, one lateral and one central (rhachidian) tooth, each being delicate and with different numbers of cusps. The central and lateral teeth had seven cusps and five cusps, respectively, in both males and females. Outer and inner marginal teeth of males had two and one cusps, while those of females had five and six cusps, respectively. The female's radula is yellow-whitish. The male's radula is reddish dark brown.

A review of sea turtle nesting activity along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey

Many parts of the Turkish coastline are important nesting grounds for sea turtles. The aim of this study was to assess the present state of sea turtle populations along the coastline of Turkey, by evaluating research conducted at various nesting grounds from 1979 to 2000. The results of the evaluation indicate that the Turkish coastline is the most important nesting area for Chelonia mydas, and the third most important nesting area for Caretta caretta after Greece and Libya (if nesting estimates for Libya are correct) in the entire Mediterranean. The most important C. caretta nesting beaches in Turkey are Dalyan (11.9%), Kumluca (11.3%), Belek (27.9%), Kizilot, (8.9%) and Anamur (8.8%), while those for C. mydas are Kazanli (24.1%) and Akyatan (54.4%). These sites are classified as “Nesting Areas of 1st Degree Importance”. Annual mean nest numbers along the coastline of Turkey are estimated to be ca. 2000 for C. caretta and 650 for C. mydas. Assuming that each adult female sea turtle nests three times per season, the annual numbers of nesting females along the beaches of Turkey range between about 500 and 800 for C. caretta and 130 and 300 for C. mydas. Annual nesting densities along the 204 km beach strip, which includes 17 important nesting grounds in Turkey, were 11.3 nests/km for C. caretta and 19.2 nests/km for C. mydas.
