Geographic analysis of disease and care.

The importance to health of customs of diet, dress, types of settlement and housing and of physical environmental factors such as climate, vegetation, altitude, and topography have been widely recognized since the time of Hippo­ crates' Airs, Waters, and Places. Geographical variation has been studied as geographic pathology, medical ecology, medical topography, geographical epidemiology, geomedicine, and other rubrics, but only in the past 30 years has the discipline of geography itself applied its perspective and methodology to the study of health, disease, and care. After presenting an introduction to the field, I address some of the major geographic questions as they apply to medical geography and offer an explanation and critique of the methodology and theory currently being used to answer them.

Question importante, car parmi les facteurs qui affectent l'âge de la première menstruation — l'affaiblissement du sujet par des maladies comme la tuberculose, l'âge de puberté de la mère, etc. —, celui qui pourrait avoir subi le plus de changements dans le temps est le régime alimentaire. Les chercheurs admettent aujourd'hui que la première menstruation résulte d'un processus de maturation plus général qui est sensible à la nutrition.

Preventive medicine--its changing concepts, 1859-1959.

Since 1859 there has been a section of the American Medical Association, with various names and with varying emphases, devoted to meteorology, medical topography, epidemic diseases, hygiene, sanitary science, industrial medicine, public health, and preventive medicine. The history of the section reflects the changes resulting from the solution of old problems and the emergence of new ones. Important advances resulted from the indentification of parasites and vectors concerned in transmissible diseases, the discovery of methods of immunization, the recognition of deficiency diseases, and the development of chemotherapy. New problems arise from the pollution of air and water by an increasingly dense population, the increase in the average age of the population, the constant introduction of new chemicals and processes into industry, and the accumulating exposure to ionizing radiations. In view of the accomplishments of the past, it is stimulating to consider the problems that lie ahead.
