Social variables for replication of studies using mean scores of social support, self-care, and fibromyalgia knowledge: a cross-sectional study.

To investigate biopsychosocial variables that contribute to explaining social support, self-care, and fibromyalgia knowledge in patients with fibromyalgia. A cross-sectional study. We built ten models of predictive variables (schooling, ethnicity, associated diseases, body regions affected by pain, employment status, monthly income, marital status, health level, medication, sports activities, interpersonal relationships, nutrition level, widespread pain, symptom severity, cohabitation, dependent people, number of children, social support, self-care, and fibromyalgia knowledge) and individually tested their explanatory performance to predict mean scores on the Fibromyalgia Knowledge Questionnaire (FKQ), Medical Outcomes Study's Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS), and Appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale-Revised (ASAS-R). We used analysis of variance to verify the association among all variables of mathematically adjusted models (F-value ≥ 2.20) and we reported only models corrected with p < 0.05 and R2 > 0.20. One hundred and ninety people with fibromyalgia (aged 42.3 ± 9.7years) participated in the study. Our results show that the variables schooling, ethnicity, body regions affected by pain, frequency of sports activities, dependent people, number of children, widespread pain, social support, and self-care determine 27% of the mean FKQ scores. Marital status, self-care, and fibromyalgia knowledge determine 22% of mean MOS-SSS scores. Schooling, ethnicity, employment status, frequency of sports activities, nutrition level, cohabitation, number of children, social support, and fibromyalgia knowledge determine 30% of the mean ASAS-R scores. Studies using mean scores of social support, self-care, and fibromyalgia knowledge should collect and analyze the social variables described in the present study.

Language and Memory Reserve Mediate Protective Effects of Social Support on MCI or Dementia Risk in Older Women

More supportive social relationships are protective of cognitive decline in older adulthood. Although supportive social relationships are hypothesized to promote cognitive reserve (CR; the cognitive adaption to neuropathology), it is unknown whether CR mediates associations between social support and risk of developing mild cognitive impairment or dementia (MCI/dementia). Data from 815 women (aged 73-87 years) participating in the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study-MRI cohort (WHIMS-MRI) and Women’s Health Initiative Study of Cognitive Aging (WHISCA) were analyzed to examine whether domain-specific estimates of CR mediate associations between social support and incident MCI/dementia risk. Women completed the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SS) in 2004-2005, a structural MRI (sMRI) of the brain in 2005-06, and annual extensive neuropsychological examinations till 2018. CR (6-months after completing the MOS-SS) was estimated across different domains (e.g. verbal memory, figural memory, language, visuospatial, and attention) as the residual variance after regressing out effects of sMRI variables, sociodemographic factors, and measurement error. Structural equation models were constructed to examine whether CR mediate associations between social support and MCI/dementia risk while adjusting for covariates. Higher social support was associated with lower MCI/dementia risk (hazard ratio=0.85 per 1-SD;p=0.037), higher language reserve (standardized β=0.09;p=0.008) and verbal memory reserve (standardized β=0.08;p=0.025). Language and verbal memory reserve each significantly explained approximately 14% of the protective effect of social support. Findings illustrate the heterogeneous effect of social support on CR, highlighting the importance of language and verbal memory reserve as mediators of the association between social support and MCI/dementia risk.

The relationship between adult attachment and coping with brain tumour: the mediating role of social support.

A primary brain tumour diagnosis is known to elicit higher distress than other forms of cancer and is related to high depressive symptomatology. Using a cross-sectional design, the present study explored how individuals cope with this diagnosis using an attachment theory framework. Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were hypothesised to be positively related to helplessness/hopelessness, anxious preoccupation, and cognitive avoidance; and negatively related to fighting spirit and fatalism coping. We proposed perceived social support to play a mediating role in those associations. Four hundred and eighty participants diagnosed with primary brain tumours completed the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (Mini-MAC), the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire-Revised (ECR-R), and the modified Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Scale (mMOS-SSS) online. Lower perceived social support mediated the positive associations between both higher attachment anxiety and avoidance and higher helpless/hopeless coping. Attachment anxiety was also positively associated with anxious preoccupation. This relationship was not mediated by perceived social support. Cognitive avoidance was unrelated to both attachment dimensions and social support. The findings highlight that the differences in coping repertoire are associated with social relatedness factors, specifically attachment security and its relationship to perceived social support. Implications of the findings are discussed.

The influence of mindfulness and social support on stress reactivity during pregnancy.

Exaggerated stress reactivity can lead to negative health outcomes, which can be especially harmful during important periods of development such as pregnancy. Therefore, studies are needed to examine potential protective factors associated with lower perceived stress reactivity and lower cortisol awakening response (CAR) during pregnancy. The current cross-sectional study examined whether low-income women (n=152) with higher mindfulness (attentiveness and awareness of the present moment) and more perceived social support had lower levels of perceived stress reactivity and a lower CAR during pregnancy. Women completed self-report measures of mindfulness (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale), social support (Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Scale), and perceived stress reactivity (Perceived Stress Reactivity Scale) during their first trimester of pregnancy and collected saliva using the passive drool procedure at home (at awakening and at 30min after awakening). Results showed that women with greater mindfulness and greater perceived social support had significantly lower perceived stress reactivity, but not a lower CAR. These results provide preliminary support for mindfulness and social support as potential protective factors of perceived stress reactivity and have implications for experimental studies aimed at improving pregnant women's mindfulness and social support for reducing their stress reactivity and potentially improving health outcomes.

The detrimental effects of ambivalence over emotional expression on well‐being among Mainland Chinese breast cancer patients: Mediating role of perceived social support

Recent research has documented the harmful effects of ambivalence over emotional expression (AEE) on psychological well-being, but few studies to date have examined AEE among Mainland Chinese breast cancer patients, an ethnic group that prioritizes emotion restraint to preserve social harmony. The present study examined the relationship between AEE and well-being (viz, anxious and depressive symptoms and quality of life) and evaluated perceived social support as a potential mediator of this relationship in a sample of Mainland Chinese breast cancer patients. Three hundred twenty-seven Chinese breast cancer patients recruited from Weifang, China, completed a self-reported questionnaire containing the Ambivalence over Emotional Expression Questionnaire (AEQ), the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS), the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B). Overall, Mainland Chinese breast cancer patients endorsed high levels of AEE. A series of mediation analyses revealed perceived social support served as a partial mediator of the relationship between AEE and well-being. Specifically, AEE was associated with lower perceived social support (βs=-.13, P<.001), which in turn, was associated with greater anxious symptoms (β=.23, P<.001), depressive symptoms (β=.20, P<.001) and lower quality of life (β=-.30, P<.001). The harmful relationship between AEE and well-being is partially explained by reduced social support. Psychosocial interventions that facilitate emotional disclosure without harming social harmony may be culturally effective for mainland Chinese breast cancer patients.

Psychological Health and Social Support in Patients with HIV/AIDS in South-East Iran During Year 2016

Background: Empirical studies show social and psychological supports are pivotal for maintaining physical, psychological, and social health in patients living with HIV/AIDS. Objectives: The present study aimed at evaluating social and psychological support and the relationship between these two factors among HIV/AIDS patients receiving services form health centers of Zahedan province, south eastern Iran. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted. HIV/AIDS patients, who received services from health care facilities of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences were recruited in the study. Psychological well-being and social support were assessed using the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being and medical outcomes study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS) questionnaires, respectively. Multivariable linear regression analysis using backward stepwise method was conducted to determine factors related to psychological health and social support. Results: A total 110 patients aged over 16 years old (83 males) were included in the study. Unsafe injecting drug use was the major HIV transmission route (59.1%). Mean psychological health score was significantly higher in males compared to females (P = 0.048). Also, a gender difference was observed for mean social support score, although it was non-significant. The regression analysis showed that females versus males and AIDS patients versus HIV infected patients had lower score of psychological well-being, moreover, social support positively and independently related to the score of psychological well-being (β = -0.505; 95% confidence interval: 0.360 to 0.649). Conclusions: The findings suggest that female patients, those living in the AIDS stage, and those with poor social support are more vulnerable to having lower level of psychological well-being. Harm reduction programs should be reinforced in such groups.

Perceived Social Support Mediates the Longitudinal Relations between Ambivalence over Emotional Expression and Quality of Life among Chinese American Breast Cancer Survivors.

The present study examined perceived social support as a mediator of the longitudinal link between ambivalence over emotional expression (AEE) and quality of life among a sample of Chinese breast cancer survivors. Ninety-six Chinese breast cancer survivors recruited from Southern California completed four surveys in total: (1) a baseline survey (T1), 1-month follow-up (T2), 3-month follow-up (T3), and 6-month follow-up (T4). Participants filled out a paper-pen questionnaire containing the Ambivalence over Emotional Expression Questionnaire (AEQ), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G), and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS). Higher T1 AEE was associated with lower T1 social support (B = -0.01, SE = 0.004, p < 0.01) which in turn was associated with lower quality of life at T2 (B = 2.98, SE = 0.64, p < 0.01), T3 (B = 2.14, SE = 0.54, p < 0.01), and T4 (B = 2.08, SE = 0.68, p < 0.01). These results suggest that the harmful effect of AEE on quality of life is explained by reduced social support. Given the detrimental effects of AEE on social support and quality of life, future research on interventions that facilitate emotional disclosure is needed. Implications for the effects of Chinese culture on AEE are discussed.

Development and Initial Validation of a Spiritual Support Subscale for the MOS Social Support Survey.

While spirituality and religious practices are important in coping with illness or other crises, there are few ways of assessing support that people receive from members of their spiritual communities. The goal of this study was to validate a new spiritual support subscale for the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS). Questions for the subscale were formed based on responses of 135 breast cancer survivors who were interviewed about their cancer experience. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in four specific factors for the MOS-SSS: emotional/informational, tangible, affectionate, and spiritual support. The new spiritual support subscale has adequate reliability and validity and may be useful in assessing an area of support that is not always addressed.

Race, Sex, and Total Knee Replacement Consideration: Role of Social Support

To determine whether there are racial differences in social support among patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and whether the impact of social support on patient preferences for total knee replacement (TKR) varies by race and sex. A total of 514 white and 285 African American patients with knee OA were surveyed. Logistic regression models were performed to determine if the relationship between willingness to undergo TKR and the interaction of patient race and sex was mediated by social support. Compared to whites with knee OA, African American patients were less likely to be married (P < 0.001), reported less close friends/relatives (P < 0.001), and had lower Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS) scores (P < 0.001). African American patients were also less willing to undergo TKR (62% versus 80%; P < 0.001) than whites. The odds of willingness to undergo TKR were less in white females compared to white males when adjusted for recruitment site, age, income, and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score (odds ratio [OR] 0.57, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.34-0.96). This difference was no longer significant when further adjusted for marital status, number of close friends/relatives, and MOS-SSS score, but the effect size remained unchanged (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.35-1.02). The odds of willingness to undergo TKR remained much less in African American females (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.19-0.64) and African American males (OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.14-0.54) compared to white males when controlled for sociodemographic, clinical, and social support measures. African American patients reported less structural and functional social support than whites. Social support is an important determinant of preference for TKR surgery only among whites.

Social support of low-income Brazilian mothers related to time to completion of childhood vaccinations

Our study objective was to examine how maternal social support and depressive symptoms are associated with time to completion of childhood vaccinations. We used cross-sectional data from 582 randomly-selected, low-income Brazilian children. Adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate time to completing the first three recommended oral polio and diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) vaccinations as well as their booster doses. Among only the women with low social support, each ten-point increase on the Medical Outcomes Study—Social Support Scale was associated with a 20% increased chance of completing the first three recommended vaccinations for polio and DPT at any given time (HR = 1.20, 95% CI 1.02–1.42). Although falling short of statistical significance, also among mothers with low social support, we found a suggestive finding of increased social support associated with 25% greater chance of completing polio and DPT booster vaccines at any given time (HR = 1.25, 95% CI 0.98–1.60). There was no association between maternal depressive symptoms and vaccination completion. Among mothers with little social support, increased social support may be important for timely completion of vaccinations in low-income Brazilian children. Longitudinal studies and research on mechanisms explaining associations between maternal social support and childhood vaccination are needed.

Social support and leisure-time physical activity: longitudinal evidence from the Brazilian Pró-Saúde cohort study

BackgroundAlthough social support has been observed to exert a beneficial influence on leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), multidimensional approaches examining social support and prospective evidence of its importance are scarce. The purpose of this study was to investigate how four dimensions of social support affect LTPA engagement, maintenance, type, and time spent by adults during a two-year follow-up.MethodsThis paper reports on a longitudinal study of 3,253 non-faculty public employees at a university in Rio de Janeiro (the Pró-Saúde study). LTPA was evaluated using a dichotomous question with a two-week reference period, and further questions concerning LTPA type (individual or group) and time spent on the activity. Social support was measured by the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS). To assess the association between social support and LTPA, two different statistical models were used: binary and multinomial logistic regression models for dichotomous and polytomous outcomes, respectively. Models were adjusted separately for those who began LTPA in the middle of the follow up (engagement group) and for those who had maintained LTPA since the beginning of the follow up (maintenance group).ResultsAfter adjusting for confounders, statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) between dimensions of social support and group LTPA were found in the engagement group. Also, the emotional/information dimension was associated with time spent on LTPA (OR = 2.01; 95% CI 1.2-3.9). In the maintenance group, material support was associated with group LTPA (OR = 1.80; 95% CI; 1.1-3.1) and the positive social interaction dimension was associated with time spent on LTPA (OR = 1.65; 95% CI; 1.1-2.7).ConclusionsAll dimensions of social support influenced LTPA type or the time spent on the activity. However, our findings suggest that social support is more important in engagement than in maintenance. This finding is important, because it suggests that maintenance of LTPA must be associated with other factors beyond the individual's level of social support, such as a suitable environment and social/health policies directed towards the practice of LTPA.

Reciprocal Effects of Social Support in Major Depression Epidemiology

Background:The clinical course and epidemiology of major depressive episodes (MDEs) may be influenced by reciprocal interactions between an individual and the social environment. Epidemiological data concerning these interactions may assist with anticipating the clinical needs of depressed patients.Methods:The data source for this study was a Canadian longitudinal study, the National Population Health Survey (NPHS), which provided 8 years of follow-up data. The NPHS interview included a brief diagnostic indicator for MDE, the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short Form for Major Depression (CIDI-SFMD). The NPHS interview also incorporated the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOSSS) and a set of relevant demographic and health-related measures. The MOSSS assesses total social support and four specific dimensions of social support. Hazard ratios (HR) were used to quantify associations in the longitudinal data.Results:Lower quartile total social support ratings predicted MDE incidence: the HR adjusted for age and sex was 1.9 (95% CI 1.6 – 2.2). Lower quartile ratings in specific social support dimensions yielded similar HRs. MDE was associated with emergence of lower-quartile affection social support (age and sex adjusted HR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1 – 1.7), but other aspects of social support were not consistently associated with MDE.Conclusions:Low social support appears to be a robust risk factor for MDE and can be used to identify persons at higher risk of MDE. Evidence that MDE has a negative effect on social support was weaker and was restricted to affection social support.

Risk factors associated with transfer anxiety among patients transferring from the intensive care unit to the ward

This paper is a report of an examination of the effect of risk factors on the development of transfer anxiety in patients being transferred from the intensive care unit to the ward. Transfer of a patient from the intensive care unit to the ward could lead to transfer anxiety, a type of separation anxiety associated with transfer from a secure and familiar environment to an unfamiliar one. Previous studies have demonstrated associations between hospital anxiety and demographic, clinical and social factors. Data were collected from 100 patients who were transferred from intensive care unit to the ward, using medical records and three self-report questionnaires (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Scale, Health Care System Distrust Scale), completed within 72 hours of transfer, between 2005 and 2006. Spearman Rho correlations were used to determine relationships between variables. A statistically significant relationship was found between amount of social support (r(s)=-0.21, P=0.04), length of intensive care unit hospitalization (r(s)=0.21, P=0.04) and gender (U=907.0, P=0.03) with transfer anxiety. No statistically significant relationships were found between transfer anxiety and other factors. Nurses should be especially aware of an increased risk for transfer anxiety among women, and those with lower social support and longer intensive care unit length of stay. We recommend that interventions, especially targeted to these populations, be developed to decrease its prevalence.

Social Support and Depression among Bone Marrow Transplant Patients

This study considered the role of social support in mitigating depression among bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients. Eighty-six BMT patients completed the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS) and the Centers for Epidemiological Studies of Depression Scale (CES-D) before transplant and again at one year posttransplant. Results showed moderate levels of depressive symptoms in BMT patients, with 29.1 percent and 27.6 percent meeting the suggested criterion for clinical depression at pre-BMT and one year post-BMT, respectively. Overall, patients experienced a reduced level of depression post-BMT, although females reported more depression than males. Social support pre-BMT predicted depression levels post-BMT controlling for initial levels of depression. Clinical implications for health care providers working with cancer patients and their families are discussed.
