The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hyperandrogenic disorders in women. These may range from simple hirsutism, without clearly demonstrable biochemical features of hyperandrogenism, to frank virilization. The symptoms and signs include those that involve the pilosebaceous unit (PSU)—that is, hirsutism, acne, and alopecia—and those that involve the female reproductive system—amenorrhea and infertility. Hyperandrogenism is also a forerunner of serious cardiovascular problems (for example, hypertension, microvascular disease, and dyslipidemias) and other metabolic disorders (such as type 2 diabetes mellitus).
