Researches based on bio inspired synthesis of noble metal nano materials has become a promising one in today’s biomedical approach in therapy and diagnosis due to multidimensional applications. Furthermore, silver nanoparticles were reported to have several medicinal applications. Hence the present study was to explore the antioxidant and antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from rutin isolated from the methanolic extract of leaves of Melia dubia. The biosynthesized nanoparticles were analyzed using UV-Visible, FT-IR, XRD and SEM techniques. The band at 398.5nm in the UV-Visible spectra confirmed the formation of AgNPs. The characteristic shift in OH and C=O peak after the formation of silver nano particles shows the participation of biomaterial (Rutin) in the reduction process which is further supported by SEM report. The average size of the particle (19 nm) was determined from XRD analysis using the Scherrer’s equation. The antimicrobial and antioxidant efficacy of harvested nanoparticles were compared for their potential with rutin and silver salt. The synthesized material was shown to have good antimicrobial activity towards the tested bacteria and fungi and potentially active towards free radicals. Thus, the silver nanoparticles (AgNps) synthesized using bio-flavanoid viz. rutin are potentially good and therefore can be further studied for pharmacological activities.

A Review on Plants and Microorganisms Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles, Role of Plants Metabolites and Applications.

Silver nanoparticles are one of the most extensively studied nanomaterials due to their high stability and low chemical reactivity in comparison to other metals. They are commonly synthesized using toxic chemical reducing agents which reduce metal ions into uncharged nanoparticles. However, in the last few decades, several efforts were made to develop green synthesis methods to avoid the use of hazardous materials. The natural biomolecules found in plants such as proteins/enzymes, amino acids, polysaccharides, alkaloids, alcoholic compounds, and vitamins are responsible for the formation of silver nanoparticles. The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles is an eco-friendly approach, which should be further explored for the potential of different plants to synthesize nanoparticles. In the present review we describe the green synthesis of nanoparticles using plants, bacteria, and fungi and the role of plant metabolites in the synthesis process. Moreover, the present review also describes some applications of silver nanoparticles in different aspects such as antimicrobial, biomedicine, mosquito control, environment and wastewater treatment, agricultural, food safety, and food packaging.

Introduction: Nanotechnology is considered the sector of research and innovation that aims at building things, systems, devices, materials at a scale of atoms and molecules. Nanotechnology is an incredibly growing field in the era of modern science. Silver nanoparticles are known to have good pharmacological properties. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles eliminates toxicity and is also without side effects. On the other hand Achyranthes aspera is an annual herb that belongs to the family of Amaranthaceae. Every part of the plant has medicinal values. Our study deals with the green synthesis of Achyranthes aspera mediated silver nano particles and assessment of their anti cariogenic and anti inflammatory properties. Aim: The current study aims at assessing the anti cariogenic and anti inflammatory properties of Achyranthes aspera mediated silver nano particles and investigating the efficacy of Achyranthes aspera mediated Silver nano particles. Materials and Methods: The methodology includes Green synthesis of Achyranthes aspera mediated Silver nano particle synthesis followed by tests for anti cariogenic and anti inflammatory properties. Results: Both the anti cariogenic and anti inflammatory activities of theAchyranthes aspera mediated silver nano particles had shown a proportionate increase in activity with the increase in µl concentration. Conclusion: Achyranthes aspera mediated silver nano particles have shown significant anti inflammatory and anti cariogenic activity and they are considered as potent anti inflammatory and anti cariogenic agents.

A Review on Plant Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles as a Greener Approach

Metal nanoparticles are used in all phases of science, including medical fields. They still seduce scientists to explore new dimensions for their respective value, which is usually attributed to their corresponding small sizes. Among the other metallic nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) aroused a keen interest. The chemical methods used to synthesize AgNPs involve reducing and stabilizing agents, which subsequently become risks to the environment. For these reasons, the green synthesis of AgNPs is a significant area of interest. Among the variety of biological molecules used to synthesize AgNPs, the biological molecules obtained in the form of plant extracts are superior to others because of the ease of handling and the reduction of costs. Many plant parts have been used to synthesize AgNPs such as whole plants, leaves, seeds, bark etc. The synthesis of AgNPs by plant extracts is due to the presence of a large amount of organic chemicals such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, enzymes and coenzymes, phenolic flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, gum, etc., capable of donating an electron to reduce Ag+ ions to Ag0. The active ingredient responsible for the reduction of Ag+ ions varies depending on the extract used. The size and size distribution of AgNPs synthesized with plant extracts depend on plant extract concentration, silver nitrate concentration, pH of the medium, incubation time and temperature. These factors can be modified to refine the properties of AgNPs. Almost all of these conditions have an optimal value to obtain smaller size AgNPs with a narrow size distribution.

The strong biological activities of nanoparticles are an essential factor because the resistance shown by bacterial species to chemical biocide is one of the major problems. In the current study, it was hypothesized that the biological waste might have biological power to reduce the silver nitrate into silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Therefore, the biosynthesis of AgNPs using biological waste residue and their antibacterial influence were studied. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray techniques were used to analyze the fabricated AgNPs. In major findings, the SEM results revealed the spherical and small-sized AgNPs. The biological waste residue synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the highest inhibition zone was 25.74 ± 0.20 mm against Sphingomonas sp., while the smallest zone of inhibition was observed 9.76 ± 0.37 mm against Massilia sp. The best results were obtained against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial isolates. Therefore, it is suggested to use the biological waste instead of other biological sources because of less toxicity, cost-effective, and easy availability.

Microbial Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Lactobacillus Plantarum TA4 and its Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activity

The present study aimed to investigate the ability of Lactobacillus plantarum TA4 in tolerating Ag+ and its ability to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The biosynthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM). The cell biomass of L. plantarum TA4 demonstrated the ability to tolerate Ag+ at a concentration of 2 mM, followed by the formation of AgNPs. This was confirmed by the visual observation of color changes and a presence of maximum UV–Vis absorption centered at 429 nm. HR-TEM analysis revealed that the AgNPs were spherical with an average size of 14.0 ± 4.7 nm, while the SEM-EDX analysis detected that the particles were primarily located on the cell membrane of L. plantarum TA4. Further, DLS analysis revealed that the polydispersity index (PDI) value of biosynthesized AgNPs was 0.193, implying the monodispersed characteristic of NPs. Meanwhile, the FTIR study confirmed the involvement of functional groups from the cell biomass that involved in the reduction process. Moreover, biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, the antioxidant property of biosynthesized AgNPs that was evaluated using the DPPH assay showed considerable antioxidant potential. Results from this study provide a sustainable and inexpensive method for the production of AgNPs.

Chlorogenic acids are phenolic compounds formed by the esterification of cinnamic acids. They exhibit various pharmacological Properties. Our study deals with the green synthesis of Chlorogenic acid mediated silver nanoparticles and assessment of their anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Parthenium hysterophorus Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and its Evaluation of Antibacterial and Antineoplastic Activity to Combat Liver Cancer Cells

The synthesis of nanoparticles by biological routes may leads to the development of clean, non-toxic and environmentally acceptable green chemistry procedures. In this context, the present study was aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the leaf extract of Parthenium hysterophorus and to evaluate its antibacterial and anticancer activity. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD and TEM. The AgNPs were tested against clinical pathogens viz. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis with the maximum zone of inhibition 18, 19, 13, 17 and 12 mm, respectively at 80 µg/ml concentration. The cytotoxic assay (MTT) of synthesized AgNPs against HepG2 liver cancer cells showed significant inhibition by reducing cell viability below 50% at 53 μg/ml concentration promising the anticancer effect. The wound healing assay was performed to confirm the proliferation of HepG2 cells and the inhibition of growth observed at 50 µg/ml concentration in the 24 h treatment of AgNPs when compared with control. It was eventually concluded that the synthesized AgNPs showed promising antibacterial and anticancer activity against HepG2 liver cancer cells by promoting the inhibition of cell proliferation and migration on very low concentration.

Satureja Khuzestanica Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Its Evaluation of Antineoplastic Activity to Combat Colorectal Cancer Cell Line

Several formulations of herbal plants have been extensively applied to treat diseases. Satureja khuzistanica (S. khuzistanica) is an Iranian traditional plant with a wide range of benefit effects on different diseases. In this study, we aimed to prepare silver nanoparticles from S. khuzistanica via the green synthesis method and investigate the anti-cancer effects on the HT29 cell line. To synthesize Ag-S. Khuzistanica, 50 mL S. khuzistanica extract and 1 mM AgNO3 were mixed and shaken at room temperature for 72 h. To determine the Ag-S. Khuzistanica nanoparticle characterization, XRD, FTIR, and TEM methods were done. In addition, MTT assay and real time PCR and annexin V/PI staining were performed to investigate the cytotoxicity, bcl-2 and bax gene expression and percentage of apoptotic cells. Our findings showed that Ag-S. khuzistanica is a spherical crystalline nanoparticle with the size less than 100 nm. MTT analysis showed that 375, 750, 1500 and 3000 µg/mL Ag-S. Khuzistanica significantly decreased the cell viability of HT29 cells. Ag-S. khuzistanica significantly reduced bcl-2 and increased apoptotic index expression at 375, 750, 1500, 3000 µg/mL Ag-S. Khuzistanica in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, cell staining with Annexin V/PI showed that treating Ag-S. Khuzistanica led to increasing in apoptotic cells. In conclusion, the formulation of Ag-S. khuzistanica has the apoptotic properties on the colorectal cancer cell line.

Mangifera indica Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles as An Efficient Electrochemical Sensor for The Detection of Ascorbic Acid

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using Mangifera indica leaf extract as reducing agent was successfully carried out. The usual microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis., FTIR, XRD, EDX, and SEM were used to confirm the formation of nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles absorb light at wavelength of approximately 425 nm as confirmed by UV- visible spectroscopy. Optical property showed a colour change from colourless solution of silver nitrate to yellowish brown after addition of the plant extract. The FTIR confirmed the possible biomolecule responsible for the reduction of the silver nitrate solution as belonging to the amide and ester group. Interrogation of Pt/AgNP electrode for ascorbic acid oxidation using cyclic voltammetry suggests that the silver nanoparticles can be a promising candidate as biosensor for ascorbic acid detection.<div><br></div>

Scorzonera calyculata Aerial Part Extract Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles: Evaluation of Their Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities

In the present study, we employed an ethanolic extract of the Scorzonera calyculata for biosynthesis of AgNPs for the first time. The AgNPs were synthesized using reduction of AgNO3 solution by S. calyculata extract and synthesized AgNPs were characterized using ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the anti-oxidant activity of synthesized AgNPs were studied by 2,2-diphenyl, 1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The microscopic analysis showed that the synthesized AgNPs were spherical in shape with an average size of 25.28 nm. The DPPH results showed that the significant antioxidant activity of AgNPs. The antibacterial activity of the AgNPs was carried out by minimum inhibitory concentration that showed high toxicity against Gram negative bacteria. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized AgNPs against human lung cancer cell (A549) were investigated using MTT method and the inhibitory concentration (IC50) was found to be 12.5 µg/mL. Finally, the Annexin V/PI staining indicated that the synthesized AgNPs could induce apoptosis in A549 cells as compared to untreated cells. In conclusion, biosynthesis of AgNPs using S. calyculata extract is a very rapid and cost-effective method and the synthesized AgNPs had good biological activities.

Geranium wallichianum Leaf Extract Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles: Characterization and its Antimicrobial Activity

In present study, the Geranium wallichianum leaf extract (aqueous) and 1 mM silver nitrate solution (aqueous) were amalgamated to synthesize silver particles within the nanometer range. Initial colour changes and surface-plasmon-resonance (SPR) absorbance band observed in UV-visible spectroscopic study gave support to configuration of silver nano-particles. Silver nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and FTIR spectroscopy. Then antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activities of silver nanoparticles against selected microbial strains were studied by well diffusion method. During this work, silver SPR absorption bands between 405-425 nm range were shown by Geranium wallichianum leaf extract mediated synthesized silver nanoparticles sample solutions at different intervals. X-ray diffraction pattern displayed the formation of face centred cubic phase silver nano-structures. TEM measurements confirmed that silver nanoparticles are spherically shaped and maximum particles in 9-16 nm size range having average diameter 12.5 nm. Important FT-IR peaks at 3314.11, 1710.60, 1587.11 and 1347.77 cm-1 were predicted for hydroxyl, carbonyls, unsaturated C-C bonds and phenolic groups respectively. Further from antimicrobial results, it has been found that values of diameter of zone of inhibition (mm) of synthesized silver nanoparticles against B. subtilis, S. aureus, L. plantarum, P. aeruginosa, A. niger and C. albicans strains were 32, 28, 25, 25 35 and not active, respectively. MIC-MLC (μL) values were also determined. At last, it can be concluded that antimicrobial agents of 9-16 nm size range and stabilized by polyhydroxy-bioactive-components present in extract, in the form of silver nanoparticles has been productively synthesized.
