Study on the mesoscopic mechanical behavior and damage constitutive model of micro-steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

This study employs in-situ 4D CT experimental techniques to investigate the mesostructured changes and mechanical behavior of micro steel fiber-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (MSF-RAC) under uniaxial compression and cyclic loading conditions. The research aims to address the scientific problem of limited understanding of how micro steel fibers affect the mesoscopic mechanical behavior and structural damage characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete. High-resolution CT scanning technology was utilized for real-time observation of crack initiation and propagation, revealing the micro-mechanisms by which micro steel fibers enhance RAC. The study found that incorporating micro-steel fibers significantly improves the density of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), inhibits crack development, and enhances the mechanical properties of the concrete. Based on these observations, an improved stiffness degradation damage constitutive model was proposed, which comprehensively considers the distribution orientation of micro steel fibers and ITZ characteristics. The model effectively predicts the stress-strain relationship of MSF-RAC under various conditions, demonstrating high accuracy and practicality. These findings provide important theoretical support and experimental evidence for the optimal design of RAC, showcasing significant engineering application value by promoting the sustainable use of recycled materials in construction.

Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Model for Artificially Structured Soils under Undrained Conditions

Triaxial tests are performed for remolded, artificially isotropic, and anisotropic structured samples under undrained conditions at confining pressures of 25, 100, and 200 kPa. Based on these test results, a binary-medium constitutive model is formulated based on homogenization theory and a breakage mechanism to describe the behaviors of structured soils. In this model, the binary-medium material is idealized as a representative volume element (RVE) composed of bonded elements, whose mechanical behaviors are expressed by the linearly elastic model, and frictional elements, whose mechanical behaviors are described by the double-yield surfaces constitutive model. The parameters of the bonded and frictional elements are determined from the test results of structured and remolded samples, respectively. The expressions for the breakage ratio and local stress coefficient matrix are introduced, and their parameters are provided. The computed results are compared with the test results, demonstrating that the model can reflect the main deformation features of structured soil relatively well, including the influence of anisotropy, gradual damage to particle bonding, and pore development.

Low- and elevated-temperature constitutive model of cold-formed titanium-clad bimetallic steel sections

An experiment was conducted to study the mechanical properties of the flat and corner portions of cold-formed TCBS sections at low and elevated temperatures. The predetermined temperatures were set at −80 °C, −40 °C, 20 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C. The failure modes, stress-strain curves, and key mechanical parameters of TCBS flat and corner couple specimens at different temperatures were obtained based on test results. The TCBS flat and corner specimens failed in ductile mode. The stress-strain curves of the TCBS flat and corner specimens at different temperatures did not show a yield plateau. The strength properties of TCBS flat and corner specimens at low temperatures obviously increased. The strength properties of the TCBS flat and corner specimens generally decreased with increasing elevated temperature. The cold-forming process increased and decreased the strength and ductile properties of TCBS at different temperatures, respectively. Additionally, the mechanical property reduction factors of TCBS flat and corner specimens at different temperatures were compared with those of various structural steels. Moreover, the applicability of the reduction factors for yield strength and elastic modulus provided in current codes was assessed for TCBS flat and corner specimens. Furthermore, the prediction equations of mechanical parameters and constitutive models were proposed for the TCBS flat and corner couple specimens at different temperatures, which provided a basis for designing TCBS structures in low- and elevated-temperature conditions.

Pseudo strain-hardening alkali-activated composites with up to 100 % rubber aggregate: Static mechanical properties analysis and constitutive model development

Strain-hardening alkali-activated materials (SHAAM) provide a sustainable alternative to conventional strain-hardening cementitious composites (SHCC), offering significant environmental and economic benefits. This study examines the effects of various rubber powder (RP) volume replacement ratios (0 %, 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 100 %) on the properties of Rubber Powder Modified Strain-Hardening Alkali-Activated Composite Material (R-SHAAM), assessing workability, uniaxial compressive behavior, and uniaxial tensile behavior. The findings reveal that R-SHAAM with 100 % RP aggregate significantly enhances durability, achieving a 50.7 % reduction in crack width. Optimal axial tensile performance is observed at a 25 % replacement ratio, where R-SHAAM shows an 8.1 % increase in tensile strength and a 4.1 % increase in ultimate tensile strain. The robust multi-dimensional performance of R-SHAAM across different RP replacement ratios suggests its potential for diverse applications including pavement, marine structures, and explosive engineering, thereby offering valuable insights into sustainable material design and the effective recycling of waste materials in construction.

Characterisation of human penile tissue properties using experimental testing combined with multi-target inverse finite element modelling

This paper presents an inverse finite element (FE) approach aimed at estimating multi-layered human penile tissues. The inverse FE approach integrates experimental force–displacement and boundary deformation data of penile tissues with a developed FE model and uses new experimental data on human penile tissue. The experimental study encompasses whole organ plate-compression tests and individual layer tensile and compression tests, providing comprehensive insights into the tissue's mechanical behaviour. The biomechanical characterisation of penile tissue is of crucial significance for understanding its mechanical behaviour under various physiological and pathological conditions. The FE model is constructed using the realistic geometry of the penile segment and appropriate constitutive models for each tissue layer to leverage the accuracy and consistency of the model. Through systematic variation of tissue parameters in the inverse FE algorithm, simulations achieve the best match with both force–displacement and deformed boundary results obtained from the whole organ plate-compression tests. Test results from individual tissue layers are also utilised to assess the estimated parameters. The proposed inverse FE approach allows for the estimation of penile tissue parameters with high precision and reliability, shedding light on the mechanical properties of this complex biological organ. This work has applications not only in urology but also for researchers in various disciplines of biomechanics. As a result, our study contributes to advancing the understanding of human penile tissue mechanics whilst the methodology could also be applied to a range of other soft biological tissues. Statement of significanceThis research uses a multi-target inverse finite element (FE) approach for estimating the material parameters of human penile tissues. By integrating experimental data and a realistic FE model, this study achieves high-precision constitutive model parameter estimation, offering key insights into penile tissue mechanics under various loading conditions. The significance of this work lies in the use of this inverse FE approach for fresh-frozen human penile tissues, to identify the mechanical properties and constitutive models for both segregated tunica albuginea and corpus cavernosum as well as intact penile tissue segments. The study's scientific impact lies in its advancement of the understanding of human urological tissue mechanics, impacting researchers and clinicians alike.

Mechanical properties, micro-mechanisms, and constitutive models of seawater sea-sand engineered cementitious composites

Three mixing proportions of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) were prepared using seawater, sea-sand, and PVA fibers, corresponding to three strength grades of C30, C40, and C50, respectively. The mechanical properties of these three kinds of seawater sea-sand engineered cementitious composites (SS-ECCs), including compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus, ultimate elongation, uniaxial compressive and tensile stress-strain relationship, and so on, were analyzed by compressive, tensile, and flexural tests. The tensile and flexural strength of SS-ECCs are influenced by their ductility. The SS-ECC with C40 strength grade exhibited the best ductility, with an average ultimate tensile strain reaching 3.42 %, and possessed the highest tensile and flexural strength. The C50 specimen had the worst ductility, but its tensile strength and flexural strength came in second place. As the strength grade increased, the elastic modulus gradually increased, while the Poisson's ratio decreased. Uniaxial compressive and tensile constitutive models for SS-ECCs were established. The uniaxial compressive constitutive model was divided into a nonlinear ascending stage and a bilinear descending stage. XRD and TGA results revealed that the improvement in the strength of SS-ECCs was mainly attributed to the increased content of Ca(OH)2 in the reaction products. Additionally, the gypsum content in the raw materials decreased with the increasing strength grade, resulting in a reduction in the generation of ettringite (AFt).

Mechanical characterization and constitutive modeling of additively-manufactured polymeric materials and lattice structures

Additively manufactured polymeric lattice structures are being extensively studied, primarily because their mechanical properties can be tailored by controlling the unit cell geometry, giving them higher designability than stochastic materials. However, the inherent layer-wise additive manufacturing process affects the base material properties related to the printing direction, which in turn affects the macroscopic responses of the entire lattice materials. A robust understanding and modeling of lattice structures' elastic and plastic yield behavior in a homogenized approach are essential to enhance their design and analysis efficiency in engineering applications. In pursuit of this goal, a unified printing angle-dependent constitutive model of base materials is proposed in line with the tensile experimental data. The elastic material properties (elastic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio), obtained through numerical simulations of one unit-cell with periodic boundary conditions, exhibit anisotropic properties, with the degree of anisotropy determined by the angle of the constituent members and base materials. Furthermore, both experimental and numerical results of lattices demonstrate anisotropic mechanical response under horizontal and vertical compression. Virtual multiaxial experiments are conducted through multi-cell numerical simulations, enabling the determination of initial yielding points of two different lattice structures (Kelvin and Simple cubic and body-centered cubic hybrid structures) under various loading conditions using a dissipation energy-based criterion. Overall, the multiaxial yield surface of the investigated lattices under various stress states, except for the isotropic principal stress plane, can be properly depicted by the Extended-Hill anisotropic yield criterion.

Development in the Study of Mechanical Prop-erties and Damage Constitutive Models of Rub-ber-Reclaimed Concrete

Advances in rubber-reinforced concrete technology and its applications in engineering are cru-cial for the thorough recycling and safe disposal of waste tire rubber and construction debris. Rubber-reinforced concrete (RAC) is a concrete material produced by substituting some fine and coarse aggregates with waste rubber particles and recycled aggregates. The incorporation of waste rubber particles endows RAC with distinctive mechanical properties and a distinct damage constitutive model. The mechanical properties of rubber recycled concrete mainly in-clude compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus. Compared to traditional concrete, RAC exhibits slightly lower compressive and flexural strengths but sig-nificantly enhanced tensile strength. This is due to the changes in mechanical properties caused by the softness and elastic properties of rubber particles. In addition, the addition of rubber particles can also improve the energy absorption capacity and impact resistance of concrete. On the other hand, in order to describe the damage behavior of rubber recycled con-crete, some constitutive models were studied. Common models include linear elastic model, plastic model, and damage model. The linear elastic model is suitable for describing the be-havior of rubber recycled concrete during the elastic stage; The plastic model is suitable for describing its deformation behavior during the plastic stage; The damage model can better describe the fracture and failure behavior of rubber recycled concrete, including shear damage, tensile damage, and compression damage. Tailored to the unique characteristics of RAC, these models consider the stiffness of rubber particles and the deformation characteristics of the binding materials, enabling accurate predictions of the stress-strain behavior of RAC. In conclusion, rubber-reinforced concrete possesses excellent mechanical and durability proper-ties, which can be accurately described and predicted using appropriate constitutive models. These findings are crucial for advancing the application and development of rubber-reinforced concrete.

Compressive mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber under medium-low strain rates: Experiments and modeling

Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely employed as a cushioning material in engineering applications to resist impact loadings due to its excellent mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity. This paper aims to investigate the compressive mechanical properties and constitutive model of SBR under medium–low strain rates both experimentally and theoretically. Firstly, quasi-static and dynamic compression tests of SBR were carried out under the strain rate up to 220 s−1 using an electronic universal testing machine and a drop-weight machine, respectively. Subsequently, the effect of loading rate on mechanical properties, strain rate sensitivity and energy absorption capacity was examined. The results indicate that SBR exhibits visco-hyperelastic characteristics with reversible compression deformation and strain rate dependency, ie., the yield stress, flow stress and dynamic increase factor (DIF) increase approximately exponentially with increasing logarithmic strain rate. In addition, the SBR exhibits excellent energy absorption capacity during compression, especially under higher strain rates and larger strain levels. Finally, a visco-hyperelastic constitutive model was proposed by replacing the nonlinear spring with a hyperelastic element in Zhu-Wang-Tang (ZWT) viscoelastic constitutive model to describe the nonlinear mechanical behaviors in SBR, and an acceptable agreement between experimental results and model predictions were observed. The findings of this research can provide a valuable guide for designing and optimizing the impact resistance of SBR structures.

Mechanical Properties and Damage Constitutive Model of Thermally Damaged Basalt

Nuclear power is a high-quality clean energy source, but nuclear waste is generated during operation. The waste continuously releases heat during disposal, increasing the adjoining rock temperature and affecting the safety of the disposal site. Basalt is widely considered a commonly used rock type in the repository. This study of basalt’s mechanical characteristics and damage evolution after thermal damage, with its far-reaching engineering value, was conducted by combining experimental work and theory. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on basalt exposed to 25 °C, 500 °C, 700 °C, 900 °C, and 1100 °C conditions, and acoustic emission (AE) equipment was utilized to observe the acoustic emission phenomenon during deformation. This study was carried out to examine the mechanical characteristics, the sound emission features, the progression of damage laws, and the stress–strain framework of basalt after exposure to different types of thermal harm. As the temperature rises, the rock’s maximum strength declines steadily, the peak strain rises in tandem, the rock sample’s ductility is augmented, the failure mode changes from shear to tensile failure, and cracks in the failure area are observed. At room temperature, the acoustic emission signal is more vigorous than in the initial stage of rock sample loading due to thermal damage; however, after the linear elastic stage is entered, its activity is lessened. In cases where the rock approaches collapse, there is a significant surge in acoustic emission activity, leading to the peak frequency of acoustic emission ringing. The cumulative ring count of acoustic emission serves as the basis for the definition of the damage variable. At room temperature, the damage evolution of rock samples can be broken down into four distinct stages. This defined damage variable is more reflective of the entire failure process. After exposure to high temperatures, the initial damage of the rock sample becomes more extensive, and the damage variable tends to be stable with strain evolution. The stress–strain constitutive model of basalt deformation is derived based on the crack axial strain law and acoustic emission parameters. A powerful relationship between theoretical and experimental curves is evident.

Compression Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Model for Soft–Hard Interlayered Rock Mass

The properties of soft–hard interbedded rock masses are significantly impacted by the strength of rock layers and the characteristics of interface surfaces. This study investigates the mechanical properties of soft–hard interlayered rock masses by preparing rock-like specimens with different interface angles. Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests were conducted to examine the compression mechanical characteristics of the specimens. Experimental results demonstrated that in the uniaxial compression tests, the peak strength of the two-layer rock-like specimen exhibits an initial decrease followed by an increase as the interface angle increases. Similarly, the peak strength of the three-layer rock-like specimen also follows a “U-shaped” pattern. The failure of both specimens shifts from tensile failure to shear failure. In the triaxial tests, the strength of the two-layer rock-like specimen initially increases and subsequently decreases as the interface angle increases. In contrast, the intensity of the three-layer rock-like specimen exhibits a decreasing trend, transitioning from shear dilation or tensile failure to shear failure. By utilizing the damage constitutive model to compute the compressive strength of the composite specimen, it was observed that the deviation from the experimental value did not exceed 2.5%, and the overall shape of the curves was in good agreement. Consequently, it is affirmed that the damage constitutive model developed in this study can accurately capture the pre-peak phase of the stress–strain relationship in soft–hard interlayered rock-like specimens, thus providing a valid representation of their mechanical behavior.

Failure mechanism analysis and tensile constitutive model of basalt fiber concrete-rock interface based on fiber surface modification

This study investigates the tensile failure mechanism at the concrete-rock interface and proposes a concrete-rock interface tensile mechanical constitutive model considering the degree of rock surface indentation and surface morphology. The Brazilian disc splitting test results demonstrate that the depth and width of rock surface indentations collectively characterize the indentation angle θ, thereby influencing the tensile strength of the interface. Specifically, when 0° ≤ θ < 45°, the concrete-rock interface exhibits a tension-shear stress state, where cracks propagate along the interface leading to the debonding of the rock and concrete. When 45° ≤ θ ≤ 90°, the concrete-rock interface adopts a compression-shear state, with cracks gradually transitioning from the interface to the concrete interior. The latter scenario enables the higher tensile performance of the concrete-rock interface compared to interface fracture. Excessive indentation depth compromises the tensile strength of the interface by inducing bending moments. A mechanical model for the tensile behaviour of the concrete-rock interface is proposed, which effectively predicts the tensile strength of the interface and its evolutionary process.

Design of Shiitake Mushroom Robotic Picking Grasper: Considering Stipe Compressive Stress Relaxation

In order to realize the automatic picking of shiitake mushrooms and reduce the risk of damage to shiitake mushrooms in the picking process, this paper designed a shiitake mushroom picking grasper. First, this paper carries out mechanical tests of compression and stress relaxation on sections of shiitake mushroom stipes, and establishes the component stress relaxation equations of shiitake mushroom stipes. The compression mechanical characteristics of the entire mushroom stipe are then analyzed using finite element analysis, with a mean square error of less than 5% compared to actual results. Second, based on the actual picking experience, this paper proposes an “L”-shaped three-finger picking grasper, and analyzes the mechanical relationship between the grasper’s gripping force, twisting separation torque, and servo output torque. Furthermore, according to the mechanical constitutive model of mushroom stipes, the optimal twisting separation torque and corresponding servo motor output torque for the grasper are determined. The picking grasper designed in this paper was tested for picking mushrooms of different growth periods, and the test results show that the picking grasper designed in this paper is able to grasp and separate the mushrooms quickly and without damage.

Study on the static and dynamic mechanical properties and constitutive models of 3D printed PLA and PLA-Cu materials

The failure of mechanical properties in 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) for many functional applications has made exploring ways for improving these properties essential; the use of copper powder for producing a composite material known as PLA-Cu is one of these ways. The mechanical responses of both PLA and PLA-Cu under both static and dynamic loading were studied using a universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus, respectively. This experimental study helped to develop a constitutive model for each material according to their mechanical behavior. However, PLA-Cu, affected by ‘impact embrittlement,’ indicates a purely linear elastic behavior during dynamic conditions. Addition of copper powder increases the yield strength of the composite material significantly as compared to pure PLA, with both materials being strain rate sensitive as they change from static to dynamic states. The calibration of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model with the inclusion of the Cowper-Symonds strain rate term for these materials promises useful information for numerical models, improving the predictive models on their behavior under different loading scenarios.

The Nonlinear Mechanical Constitutive Model and Deep Learning Method to Inverse Design Dual‐Feature‐Integrated Lattice Metamaterial

The bio‐inspired lattice structure of a regularly fibrous organization is a kind of structural material with practical value in flexible bio‐integrated electronics. The recently proposed dual‐feature‐integrated lattice structure can accurately customize the nonlinear mechanical curve of biological issues. However, it is still lacking the constitutive models to inverse design the desirable mechanical properties. Herein, a nonlinear mechanical constitutive model for the dual‐feature‐integrated metamaterial is established by introducing the equilibrium equation and deformation coordination conditions. The experimental and numerical results show that the proposed constitutive model can predict accurately the stress–strain curves of dual‐feature‐integrated lattice structure. In addition, the machine learning‐whale optimization algorithm method is used to inverse design the dual‐feature‐integrated lattice structure, which can quickly find the target mechanical responses (chicken skin and human skin) in a board design space. The dual‐feature‐integrated mechanical metamaterial has a higher structural design option in comparison to the pure horseshoe and chiral metamaterial. The finding of this work contributes to the designs of lattice structures with flexibility and stretchable electronics.

Elevated-temperature mechanical property and constitutive model of galvanized parallel wire strands

High-temperature conditions lead to severe degradation of the mechanical properties of steel cables. This study conducted uniaxial tensile tests on 19-wire galvanized parallel wire strands (GPWSs) at elevated temperatures. Using a non-contact measurement system, the failure modes under high-temperature conditions were observed, and stress-strain curves were obtained for 12 temperature levels ranging from 20 °C to 700 °C. The yield strength corresponding to a strain level of 1.5% was determined as the nominal yield strength, which ensures both material strength and sufficient safety. By analyzing the stress-strain curves, reduction factors for the proportional limit, elastic modulus, nominal yield strength, and ultimate strength at various temperatures were obtained for the GPWS. Additionally, a Boltzmann curve was used to fit the reduction factors of the mechanical properties of the GPWS. A constitutive model for the entire process of the GPWSs was established through the segmented fitting of the elastic, plastic hardening, and necking stages. High temperatures severely affect the tensile strength of the GPWS. When the temperature reaches 400 °C, the ultimate tensile strength of the GPWS is only about 50% of that at room temperature. At 700 °C, the ultimate tensile strength of the GPWS is reduced to only 2.5%.

Post-fire mechanical properties and constitutive model of Q690 high-strength structural steel

Fire hazard is one of the main threats to the integrity of steel structural buildings. Developing an accurate post-fire constitutive model for structural steel is crucial for enhancing the failure assessment of steel structures exposed to fire. In this study, the post-fire mechanical behavior of Q690 high-strength structural steel is investigated. Eighteen round bar specimens made of Q690 steel were heated with temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 900 °C. Tensile tests were conducted on these specimens to obtain the post-fire stress-strain curves and associated mechanical parameters of the material. To accurately characterize the post-fire behavior of Q690 steel, a temperature-dependent elastoplastic constitutive model combined with its numerical implementation algorithm is proposed. This model consists of four components: a temperature-dependent elasticity criterion, the von Mises yield criterion, an associated flow rule, and a temperature-dependent isotropic hardening law. The proposed constitutive model has a notable feature, i.e. the material parameters in the model can be defined as a function of temperature according to the test results. As a result, when utilizing this model for post-fire assessments of steel members, only three routine parameters, i.e. elastic modulus at room temperature, Poisson's ratio, and the temperature experienced by the material, are required in the numerical simulation to generate the material’s stress-strain relationships. To verify the proposed constitutive model, the new model was introduced into the numerical simulations of the tested round bar specimens after exposure to various temperature conditions. Both the load-displacement curves and local deformation of each round bar specimen obtained from the numerical simulations are compared with the test results to validate the accuracy of the new model. The constitutive model presented in this study provides a useful tool for assessing the post-fire behaviors of steel components.

A rapid and precise approach to predicting the cure‐induced warping of T‐shaped composite parts with inconsistent layup

AbstractThis work involved the precise prediction and in‐depth analysis of cure‐induced warping of T‐shaped parts with inconsistent layup. First, the warping mechanism of this kind of part was studied. Then, a finite element analysis (FEA) that considered the parts' structural characteristics and inconsistent layup using the curing mechanical constitutive model was developed to predict the warping. Following verification of the model's accuracy, the effects of material and structural characteristics on warping were investigated. When designing T‐shaped parts, selecting materials with lower thermal expansion coefficients can help minimize warping. Additionally, increasing the radius of the chamfer at the rib and flange connections is also effective. By taking into account the effects of structural parameters and inconsistent layup by using both classical laminated plate theory and artificial neural networks (ANN), a rapid and accurate surrogate model for warping prediction was finally developed. It was discovered that the two‐layer ANN model performed better than the other two models and could predict warping with accuracy and speed. For the parts analyzed in this work, this model is able to identify the fluctuations of warping captured by FEA. Moreover, by defining deviation as the difference between the predicted values of the surrogate model and the FEA, it can be observed that the majority of deviations for the validation set are within ±1.5 mm. This demonstrates that the two‐layer ANN possesses strong generalization ability and high accuracy in predicting warping.Highlights The inconsistent layup could significantly affect the T‐shaped part's warping. Cutting off a part's rib may significantly reduce its warping. A rapid and accurate model for warping prediction was developed. The layup and structure's influence could be identified by the two‐layer ANN.
