Enhanced daytime atmospheric mercury in the marine boundary layer in the South Oceans

Understanding the spatial and temporal variations of atmospheric mercury (Hg) in the marine boundary layer could advance our knowledge on ocean evasion of Hg. Here, we conducted continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in the marine boundary layer during a round-the-world cruise from August 2017 to May 2018. We observed the highest and lowest TGM concentrations in Southern Indian Ocean (1.29 ± 0.22 ng m−3) and Southern Atlantic Ocean (0.61 ± 0.28 ng m−3), respectively. During the daytime, enhanced TGM was observed with the diurnal amplitude difference reaching its maximum in the range of 0.30–0.37 ng m−3 in Southern Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean. The positive correlation between TGM (R2 = 0.68–0.92) and hourly solar radiation in each ocean suggested that the daytime enhanced TGM was likely driven by Hg photoreduction in seawater, after excluding the influence of other meteorological factors. The diurnal amplitude of TGM in the marine boundary layer might be impacted by the microbial productivity and the ratio of ultraviolet radiation. Our study highlights that ocean acts as a net TGM source during the daytime in the Southern Hemisphere and aqueous photoreduction process may play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of Hg.

Field Evidence for Asian Outflow and Fast Depletion of Total Gaseous Mercury in the Polluted Coastal Atmosphere.

Atmospheric mercury (Hg) cycling in polluted coastal atmosphere is complicated and not fully understood. Here, we present measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) monitored at a coastal mountaintop in Hong Kong downwind of mainland China. Sharp TGM peaks during cold front passages were frequently observed due to Asian pollution outflow with typical TGM/CO slopes of 6.8 ± 2.2 pg m-3 ppbv-1. Contrary to the daytime maximums of other air pollutants, TGM exhibited a distinct diurnal variation with a midday minimum. Moreover, we observed four cases of extremely fast TGM depletion after sunrise, during which TGM concentrations rapidly dipped to 0.3-0.6 ng m-3 accompanied by other pollutants on the rise. Simulated meteorological fields revealed that morning upslope flow transporting anthropogenically polluted but TGM-depleted air masses from the mixed layer caused morning TGM depletion at the mountaintop location. The TGM-depleted air masses were hypothesized to result mainly from fast photooxidation of Hg after sunrise with minor contributions from dry deposition (5.0%) and nocturnal oxidation (0.6%). A bromine-induced two-step oxidation mechanism involving abundant pollutants (NO2, O3, etc.) was estimated to play a dominant role, contributing 55%-60% of depleted TGM and requiring 0.20-0.26 pptv Br, an amount potentially available through sea salt aerosol debromination. Our findings suggest significant effects of the interaction between anthropogenic pollution and marine halogen chemistry on atmospheric Hg cycling in the coastal areas.

Near-global mapping of TGM based on aircraft measurements from intercontinental flights

Atmospheric mercury sources are numerous and complex. Accessing and understanding the strength of each source is important for understanding mercury cycling between the various environmental compartments as it affects atmospheric loadings.In this regard, this study presents an upper tropospheric near-global source evaluation of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and its impacts on atmospheric loadings are therefore examined using TGM measurements from a container aboard intercontinental passenger flights between 2005 and 2016. The trove of measurements performed on board of IAGOS-CARIBIC was exploited through developed receptor models, assuring a high likelihood of extracting the maximal amount of information from the collected data. We reconstructed atmospheric mercury concentrations and assessed the contribution of the major natural and anthropogenic sources, explaining 98% of the observations with a correlation of 82% and a significance level of 0.001 (p-value).The results show that Asia stands out as the main hotspot of TGM, mainly loaded by factors linked to industrial and SO2-related sources. Contribution and geolocation strength of industrial, volcanic, biogenic, biomass burning, and petrogenic-related sources were quantified, identified and presented.The improved data analysis tools as probability mass factorization methods provide additional insights into the nature of the mercury source that can then guide the development of more effective mercury-related management strategies.

Characterization of atmospheric total gaseous mercury at a remote high-elevation site (Col Margherita Observatory, 2543 m a.s.l.) in the Italian Alps

The Col Margherita (MRG) Observatory is a high-altitude background station located in the Eastern Italian Alps. Its elevation and distance from major anthropogenic and natural sources make it ideal for monitoring baseline mercury levels and investigating its geochemical cycles. In this work, total gaseous mercury (TGM), ozone (O3) and meteorological variables were studied to investigate seasonal and diurnal variability of TGM measurements from March 2018 to May 2019. We found that the year-round mean TGM concentration was 1.8 times higher than the annual atmospheric mercury measurements previously reported during the GMOS project at the same measurement site. The seasonal variation of TGM was characterized by high values in spring and summer and lower values in winter. A systematic diel pattern of TGM was obtained, with low concentrations during the daytime and higher concentrations in the late evening. Spatial patterns and temporal changes in TGM, back-trajectories (BTs) and planetary boundary layer (PBL) analysis showed that total gaseous mercury levels were influenced by local meteorology, as well as regional and long-range transport of air masses. The lowest TGM concentrations in winter are associated with high wind speeds, low boundary layer height and cleaner air masses originating from the Western sector. Conversely, the highest TGM concentrations in spring and summer were attributed to polluted air masses passing over North-eastern and Continental Europe and were probably favoured by the higher PBL height. During the snow cover season, investigation of TGM peak events also demonstrated the potential influence of re-emission processes of previously reactive mercury deposition over snow surfaces.

Inhalation Exposure to Gaseous and Particulate Bound Mercury Present in the Ambient Air over the Polluted Area of Southern Poland.

This study concerns the concentrations of gaseous and particle-bound mercury present in ambient air of two Polish sites, differing in terms of emission structure, and the estimation of inhalation risks related to those Hg species. The measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and PM2.5-bound mercury (PBM) were performed at an urban station in Zabrze and a rural station in Złoty Potok, in 2014–2015. Both sites are located in Silesia, considered one of the European air pollution hot-spots. TGM was measured on-line (Tekran 2537). PM2.5 samples were taken with the use of low volume samplers. Hg contents in PM were determined by the CVAAS method following thermal decomposition. The median concentrations of TGM and PBM in Zabrze were 2.48 ng m−3 and 37.87 pg m−3, respectively; meanwhile in Zloty Potok, these were 1.69 ng m−3 and 27.82 pg m−3, respectively. Clearly, seasonal variability of TGM and PBM concentrations were observed, reflecting the importance of Hg and PM emissions from coal combustion for power and heating purposes. Health risk assessment was performed using a deterministic approach by the most conservative exposure scenario. The obtained HQ ratios and the cumulative HI indexes were below the limit value (<1). This means an unlikely health hazard due mercury inhalation.

Total gaseous mercury in a coastal city (Qingdao, China): Influence of sea-land breeze and regional transport

Abstract Atmospheric mercury cycling in coastal urban areas in East China is complex due to the combined influence of both intensive inland anthropogenic emission sources and marine air masses. In this study, continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations were conducted from December 2017 to December 2018 at a coastal site, Shilaoren, in Qingdao, East China. Concentrations of TGM ranged from 0.59 ng m−3 to 24.46 ng m−3 with a mean value of 2.28 (±0.87) ng m−3. TGM exhibited a distinct diurnal cycle mostly with an early morning peak and an afternoon minimum. The daily minimum and mean TGM concentrations with the occurrence of sea-land breeze circulation were higher than those without. In addition, TGM concentrations exhibited a strong dependence on wind direction with an average value of 2.41 ng m−3 in air masses from inland, ~24% higher than that from the ocean. Correlation analysis suggested that mobile combustion was a major anthropogenic emission source to TGM at Shilaoren, and coal-fired power plants became a significant contributor in winter. Potential source contribution function analysis and episodic studies attributed high TGM concentrations (>90th percentile value = 3.28 ng m−3) to regional transport from anthropogenic emission sources in the neighboring cities or provinces in eastern China. Frequently occurring typhoons contributed to the high TGM episodes in summer. Prior to the arrival of a typhoon, TGM concentrations rose sharply due to transport from polluted regions in East Asia as well as downdrafts at the front and lateral edges of a typhoon, whereas dropped to a mean concentration of 1.57 ng m−3, comparable to the globally background value, as the typhoon arrived. This study contributes to a better understanding of the effects of meteorological processes including sea-land breeze and typhoons as well as regional transport on atmospheric mercury cycling in eastern China's coastal environments.

Atmospheric mercury in an eastern Chinese metropolis (Jinan)

Urban emissions are a major contributor to atmospheric Hg budgets. Continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and particulate-bound mercury (PHg) in PM2.5 were conducted from October 2015 to July 2016 in a metropolis, Jinan, in eastern China. Average TGM and PHg concentrations were 4.91±3.66ngm-3 and 451.9±433.4pgm-3, respectively, in the entire study period. During the winter heating period (HP), mean concentrations of TGM and PHg were 5.79ngm-3 and 598.7pgm-3, respectively, twice higher than those during the non-heating periods (NHPs). During the HP, TGM exhibited a distinct diurnal pattern with a peak in the morning and a minimum in the afternoon on less polluted days but a singular peak at midday on heavily polluted days. The diurnal variation of TGM during the NHPs was predominantly influenced by the variation in boundary layer height while during the HP by anthropogenic emissions. The ratio of PHg/PM2.5 in Jinan was one to two orders of magnitude larger than those elsewhere worldwide and those in soil and coal, which suggested the high enrichment of PHg in PM2.5 in Jinan. Correlation and principle component analysis results suggested that PHg and TGM had common combustion sources during the HP, whereas PHg resulted mainly from biomass burning and meteorological variations during the NHPs. High Hg concentrations in Jinan were mostly caused by emissions from coal-fired power plants, especially for those situated east of the sampling site. In addition, TGM and PHg concentrations significantly increased during haze and fog episodes, but decreased during a dust episode due possibly to strong ventilation conditions combined with partitioning of Hg between adsorption to PM2.5 and coarse dust particles.

Ambient Mercury Observations near a Coal-Fired Power Plant in a Western U.S. Urban Area.

We report on the continuous ambient measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and several ancillary air quality parameters that were collected in Colorado Springs, CO. This urban area, which is located adjacent to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, is the second largest metropolitan area in Colorado and has a centrally located coal-fired power plant that installed mercury (Hg) emission controls the year prior to our study. There are few other Hg point sources within the city. Our results, which were obtained from a measurement site < 1 km from the power plant, show a distinct diel pattern in TGM, with peak concentrations occurring during the night (1.7 ± 0.3 ng m−3) and minimum concentrations mid-day (1.5 ± 0.2 ng m−3). The TGM concentrations were not correlated with wind originating from the direction of the plant or with sulfur dioxide (SO2) mixing ratios, and they were not elevated when the atmospheric mixing height was above the effective stack height. These findings suggest that the current Hg emissions from the CFPP did not significantly influence local TGM, and they are consistent with the facility’s relatively low reported annual emissions of 0.20 kg Hg per year. Instead, variability in the regional signal, diurnal meteorological conditions, and/or near-surface emission sources appears to more greatly influence TGM at this urban site.

Multi-year monitoring of atmospheric total gaseous mercury at a remote high-altitude site (Nam Co, 4730 m a.s.l.) in the inland Tibetan Plateau region

Abstract. Total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations were continuously measured at Nam Co Station, a remote high-altitude site (4730 m a.s.l.), on the inland Tibetan Plateau, China, from January 2012 to October 2014 using a Tekran 2537B instrument. The mean concentration of TGM during the entire monitoring period was 1.33±0.24 ng m−3 (mean ± standard deviation), ranking it as the lowest value among all continuous TGM measurements reported in China; it was also lower than most of sites in the Northern Hemisphere. This indicated the pristine atmospheric environment on the inland Tibetan Plateau. Long-term TGM at the Nam Co Station exhibited a slight decrease especially for summer seasons. The seasonal variation of TGM was characterized by higher concentrations during warm seasons and lower concentrations during cold seasons, decreasing in the following order: summer (1.50±0.20 ng m−3) &gt; spring (1.28±0.20 ng m−3) &gt; autumn (1.22±0.17 ng m−3) &gt; winter (1.14±0.18 ng m−3). Diurnal variations of TGM exhibited uniform patterns in different seasons: the daily maximum was reached in the morning (around 2–4 h after sunrise), followed by a decrease until sunset and a subsequent buildup at night, especially in the summer and the spring. Regional surface reemission and vertical mixing were two major contributors to the temporal variations of TGM while long-range transported atmospheric mercury promoted elevated TGM during warm seasons. Results of multiple linear regression (MLR) revealed that humidity and temperature were the principal covariates of TGM. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) and FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (WRF-FLEXPART) results indicated that the likely high potential source regions of TGM to Nam Co were central and eastern areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the measurement period with high biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions. The seasonality of TGM at Nam Co was in phase with the Indian monsoon index, implying the Indian summer monsoon as an important driver for the transboundary transport of air pollution onto the inland Tibetan Plateau. Our results provided an atmospheric mercury baseline on the remote inland Tibetan Plateau and serve as new constraint for the assessment of Asian mercury emission and pollution.

Four years (2011–2015) of total gaseous mercury measurements from the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory

Abstract. Mercury is a chemical with widespread anthropogenic emissions that is known to be highly toxic to humans, ecosystems and wildlife. Global anthropogenic emissions are around 20 % higher than natural emissions and the amount of mercury released into the atmosphere has increased since the industrial revolution. In 2005 the European Union and the United States adopted measures to reduce mercury use, in part to offset the impacts of increasing emissions in industrialising countries. The changing regional emissions of mercury have impacts on a range of spatial scales. Here we report 4 years (December 2011–December 2015) of total gaseous mercury (TGM) measurements at the Cape Verde Observatory (CVO), a global WMO-GAW station located in the subtropical remote marine boundary layer. Observed total gaseous mercury concentrations were between 1.03 and 1.33 ng m−3 (10th, 90th percentiles), close to expectations based on previous interhemispheric gradient measurements. We observe a decreasing trend in TGM (−0.05 ± 0.04 ng m−3 yr−1, −4.2 % ± 3.3 % yr−1) over the 4 years consistent with the reported decrease of mercury concentrations in North Atlantic surface waters and reductions in anthropogenic emissions. The decrease was more visible in the summer (July–September) than in the winter (December–February), when measurements were impacted by air from the African continent and Sahara/Sahel regions. African air masses were also associated with the highest and most variable TGM concentrations. We suggest that the less pronounced downward trend inclination in African air may be attributed to poorly controlled anthropogenic sources such as artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in West Africa.

Monsoon-facilitated characteristics and transport of atmospheric mercury at a high-altitude background site in southwestern China

Abstract. To better understand the influence of monsoonal climate and transport of atmospheric mercury (Hg) in southwestern China, measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM, defined as the sum of gaseous elemental mercury, GEM, and gaseous oxidized mercury, GOM), particulate bound mercury (PBM) and GOM were carried out at Ailaoshan Station (ALS, 2450 m a.s.l.) in southwestern China from May 2011 to May 2012. The mean concentrations (± SD) for TGM, GOM and PBM were 2.09 ± 0.63, 2.2 ± 2.3 and 31.3 ± 28.4 pg m−3, respectively. TGM showed a monsoonal distribution pattern with relatively higher concentrations (2.22 ± 0.58 ng m−3, p = 0.021) during the Indian summer monsoon (ISM, from May to September) and the east Asia summer monsoon (EASM, from May to September) periods than that (1.99 ± 0.66 ng m−3) in the non-ISM period. Similarly, GOM and PBM concentrations were higher during the ISM period than during the non-ISM period. This study suggests that the ISM and the EASM have a strong impact on long-range and transboundary transport of Hg between southwestern China and south and southeast Asia. Several high TGM events were accompanied by the occurrence of northern wind during the ISM period, indicating anthropogenic Hg emissions from inland China could rapidly increase TGM levels at ALS due to strengthening of the EASM. Most of the TGM and PBM events occurred at ALS during the non-ISM period. Meanwhile, high CO concentrations were also observed at ALS, indicating that a strong south tributary of westerlies could have transported Hg from south and southeast Asia to southwestern China during the non-ISM period. The biomass burning in southeast Asia and anthropogenic Hg emissions from south Asia are thought to be the source of atmospheric Hg in remote areas of southwestern China during the non-ISM period.

Global Mercury Observatory System (GMOS): measurements of atmospheric mercury in Celestun, Yucatan, Mexico during 2012

Within the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project, long-term continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) were carried out by a monitoring station located at Celestun, Yucatan, Mexico, a coastal site along the Gulf of Mexico. The measurements covered the period from January 28th to October 17th, 2012. TGM data, at the Celestun site, were obtained using a high-resolution mercury vapor analyzer. TGM data show values from 0.50 to 2.82ng/m(3) with an annual average concentration of 1.047 ± 0.271ng/m(3). Multivariate analyses of TGM and meteorological variables suggest that TGM is correlated with the vertical air mass distribution in the atmosphere, which is influenced by diurnal variations in temperature and relative humidity. Diurnal variation is characterized by higher nighttime mercury concentrations, which might be influenced by convection currents between sea and land. The back trajectory analysis confirmed that local sources do not significantly influence TGM variations. This study shows that TGM monitoring at the Celestun site fulfills GMOS goals for a background site.

Ten years of mercury measurement at urban and industrial air quality monitoring stations in the UK

Concentrations and trends from a decade of measurements of total gaseous mercury and particulate phase mercury at a number of monitoring stations across the UK are presented. Both emissions and ambient concentrations of mercury in the UK have continued to fall slightly during the measurement period despite already being at historically low levels. The median UK concentration of total gaseous mercury recorded in recent years was around 2.0 ng/m3. Small urban increments of about 0.4 ng/m3 above background concentrations were noted, with larger increments above the background only observed close to industrial point sources. The total gaseous mercury to particulate phase mercury ratio was large across the UK – indicating the dominance of the gaseous mercury in the atmosphere – and was observed to be larger at background and urban locations than at industrial sites, as a result of higher relative particulate phase mercury concentrations close to primary emissions point sources.

Soil pollution related to mercury-mining activities in the proximity of Usagre (Badajoz, SW Spain)

Usagre (Badajoz, SW Spain) mercury mine was active for an undetermined time until its closure in 1971. The ore exploited in this mine was cinnabar (red HgS), and metallurgy was also performed locally by means of primitive furnaces of the Bustamante type. Since the closure of the mine, reclamation measures have not been carried out at the site, and actual passives include a mine shaft, an accessible descending gallery and a mine dump adjacent to the descending gallery. In the work described here, data from two soil geochemistry surveys were combined and analysed. The surveys were separated by a period of 32 years. Measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in the underground mine and its surroundings were also considered. The soil geochemistry included mercury, lead, zinc and copper. The results indicate that soil pollution is mostly related to the trace mineralisations on the surface and they can therefore be interpreted as natural geochemical anomalies. TGM concentrations are extremely high inside the mine but are of very low concern outside the mine.

Development and application of a regional-scale atmospheric mercury model based on WRF/Chem: a Mediterranean area investigation

The emission, transport, deposition and eventual fate of mercury (Hg) in the Mediterranean area has been studied using a modified version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF/Chem). This model version has been developed specifically with the aim to simulate the atmospheric processes determining atmospheric Hg emissions, concentrations and deposition online at high spatial resolution. For this purpose, the gas phase chemistry of Hg and a parametrised representation of atmospheric Hg aqueous chemistry have been added to the regional acid deposition model version 2 chemical mechanism in WRF/Chem. Anthropogenic mercury emissions from the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme included in the emissions preprocessor, mercury evasion from the sea surface and Hg released from biomass burning have also been included. Dry and wet deposition processes for Hg have been implemented. The model has been tested for the whole of 2009 using measurements of total gaseous mercury from the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme monitoring network. Speciated measurement data of atmospheric elemental Hg, gaseous oxidised Hg and Hg associated with particulate matter, from a Mediterranean oceanographic campaign (June 2009), has permitted the model's ability to simulate the atmospheric redox chemistry of Hg to be assessed. The model results highlight the importance of both the boundary conditions employed and the accuracy of the mercury speciation in the emission database. The model has permitted the reevaluation of the deposition to, and the emission from, the Mediterranean Sea. In light of the well-known high concentrations of methylmercury in a number of Mediterranean fish species, this information is important in establishing the mass balance of Hg for the Mediterranean Sea. The model results support the idea that the Mediterranean Sea is a net source of Hg to the atmosphere and suggest that the net flux is ≈30 Mg year(-1) of elemental Hg.

Measurements of atmospheric mercury species at a German rural background site from 2009 to 2011 – methods and results

Environmental context Mercury is a very hazardous substance for human and environmental health. Systematic long-term direct measurements in the atmosphere can provide valuable information about the effect of emission controls on the global budget of atmospheric mercury, and offer insight into source–receptor transboundary transport of mercury. A complete setup for the measurement of the four most relevant atmospheric mercury species (total gaseous mercury, gaseous oxidised mercury, particle-bound mercury, and gaseous elemental mercury) has been operating at the rural background site of Waldhof, Germany, since 2009. We present the dataset for 2009–2011, the first full-speciation time series for atmospheric mercury reported in Central Europe. Abstract Measurements of mercury species started in 2009 at the air pollution monitoring site ‘Waldhof’ of the German Federal Environmental Agency. Waldhof (52°48′N, 10°45′E) is a rural background site located in the northern German lowlands in a flat terrain, 100km south-east of Hamburg. The temporally highly resolved measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM), gaseous oxidised mercury (GOM), particle-bound mercury (PBMPM2.5, with particulate matter of a diameter of ≤2.5µm) and gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) cover the period from 2009 to 2011. The complete measurement procedure turned out to be well applicable to detect GOM and PBMPM2.5 levels in the range of 0.4 to 65pgm–3. As the linearity of the analyser was proven to be constant over orders of magnitude, even larger concentrations can be measured accurately. The 3-year median concentration of GEM is found to be 1.61ngm–3, representing typical northern hemispheric background concentrations. With 6.3pgm–3, the 3-year average concentration of PBMPM2.5 is found to be approximately six times higher than the 3-year average GOM concentration. During winter the PBMPM2.5 concentration is on average twice as high as the PBMPM2.5 summer concentration, whereas the GOM concentration shows no clear seasonality. However, on a comparatively low level, a significant diurnal cycle is shown for GOM concentrations. This cycle is most likely related to photochemical oxidation mechanisms. Comparison with selected North American long-term mercury speciation datasets shows that the Waldhof 3-year median speciated mercury data represent typical rural background values.

Characteristics of atmospheric Total Gaseous Mercury (TGM) observed in urban Nanjing, China

Abstract. Long-term continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM = gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) + reactive gaseous mercury (RGM)) were conducted simultaneously along with meteorological variables and a suite of trace gases at an urban site in Nanjing, China from 18 January to 31 December 2011. Measurements were conducted using a high resolution mercury vapor analyzer (Tekran 2537B) with 5-min time resolution. The average concentration of TGM was 7.9 ± 7.0 ng m−3 with a range of 0.8–180 ng m−3 over the study period. TGM concentrations followed a typical lognormal pattern dominated by a range of 3–7 ng m−3, which was significantly higher than the continental background values (~1.5 ng m−3) in Northern Hemisphere. The mean seasonal TGM concentrations decreased in the following order: summer, spring, fall, and winter. This seasonal pattern was quite different from measurements at most other sites around the world. We attributed high monthly average concentrations to the re-volatilization of deposited mercury during the warm season due to high temperatures and greater solar radiation. Previous modeling studies suggested that Nanjing and the surrounding region have the largest Chinese natural emissions during the summer. Positive correlations between temperature, solar radiation, and TGM concentration combined with no correlation between CO and TGM in summer provide a strong indication that natural sources are important in Nanjing while most sharp peaks were caused by anthropogenic sources. TGM concentrations in Nanjing exhibited a noticeable diurnal pattern with a sharp increase after sunrise and peak of greater than 8 ng m−3 during 7–10 a.m. local time. Further, seasonally averaged diurnal cycles of TGM exhibited considerably different patterns with the largest variation in spring and insignificant fluctuations in winter. Using HYSPLIT backwards trajectories from six clusters, it was indicated that the highest TGM concentrations, 11.9 ng m−3, was derived from local air masses. The cleanest air masses, with an average TGM concentration of 4.7 and 5.9 ng m−3, were advected from the north via fast transport facilitated by sweeping synoptic flows.

Introduction to the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) and observed atmospheric composition change during 1972–2009

Abstract. European scale harmonized monitoring of atmospheric composition was initiated in the early 1970s, and the activity has generated a comprehensive dataset (available at http://www.emep.int) which allows the evaluation of regional and spatial trends of air pollution during a period of nearly 40 yr. Results from the monitoring made within EMEP, the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme, show large reductions in ambient concentrations and deposition of sulphur species during the last decades. Reductions are in the order of 70–90% since the year 1980, and correspond well with reported emission changes. Also reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) are reflected in the measurements, with an average decrease of nitrogen dioxide and nitrate in precipitation by about 23% and 25% respectively since 1990. Only minor reductions are however seen since the late 1990s. The concentrations of total nitrate in air have decreased on average only by 8% since 1990, and fewer sites show a significant trend. A majority of the EMEP sites show a decreasing trend in reduced nitrogen both in air and precipitation on the order of 25% since 1990. Deposition of base cations has decreased during the past 30 yr, and the pH in precipitation has increased across Europe. Large inter annual variations in the particulate matter mass concentrations reflect meteorological variability, but still there is a relatively clear overall decrease at several sites during the last decade. With few observations going back to the 1990s, the observed chemical composition is applied to document a change in particulate matter (PM) mass even since 1980. These data indicate an overall reduction of about 5 μg m−3 from sulphate alone. Despite the significant reductions in sulphur emissions, sulphate still remains one of the single most important compounds contributing to regional scale aerosol mass concentration. Long-term ozone trends at EMEP sites show a mixed pattern. The year-to-year variability in ozone due to varying meteorological conditions is substantial, making it hard to separate the trends caused by emission change from other effects. For the Nordic countries the data indicate a reduced occurrence of very low concentrations. The most pronounced change in the frequency distribution is seen at sites in the UK and the Netherlands, showing a reduction in the higher values. Smaller changes are seen in Germany, while in Switzerland and Austria, no change is seen in the frequency distribution of ozone. The lack of long-term data series is a major obstacle for studying trends in volatile organic compounds (VOC). The scatter in the data is large, and significant changes are only found for certain components and stations. Concentrations of the heavy metals lead and cadmium have decreased in both air and precipitation during the last 20 yr, with reductions in the order of 80–90% for Pb and 64–84% for Cd (precipitation and air respectively). The measurements of total gaseous mercury indicate a dramatic decrease in concentrations during 1980 to about 1993. Trends in hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) show a significant decrease in annual average air concentrations. For other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) the patterns is mixed, and differs between sites and between measurements in air versus precipitation.

Urban mercury pollution in the City of Paramaribo, Suriname

Atmospheric mercury pollution related to gold mining activities is a matter of concern in the Republic of Suriname. The first measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in ambient air in Suriname at different sites are presented in this study. Our study shows that Suriname has a TGM mercury background level of 1.45–1.52 ng/m3, with a mean of 1.4 ng/m3 which is in agreement with global background concentrations (1.5–2.0 ng/m3) (Feng et al. Sci Total Environ 304:61–72, 2003; Li et al. Sci Total Environ 395:72–79, 2008). Emissions of mercury from gold buy up shops in the City of Paramaribo result in TGM maximum concentrations of 109.4 ng/m3 (15 min average) and a mean concentration level of 5.6 ng/m3 at this urban measurement location. These levels are comparable with that of world cities in Asia and North America. However, per capita Paramaribo loads 3.5–6.5 times more TGM into the atmosphere than Changchun City (Fang et al. Sci Total Environ 330:159–170, 2004) and the occurring spikes are 5.3 times higher and much longer in duration then those in New York City (Carpi and Chen Water Air Soil Pollut 140:371–379, 2002). According to health standard institutions these concentrations represent no risk for the general public. However, a survey inside and in the close vicinity (<100 m) of the gold buy up shops shows mercury concentration levels that surpass the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommended exposure level of 50 μg/m3 inside and the minimal risk level of 0.2 μg/m3 of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry outside.

A review of worldwide atmospheric mercury measurements

Abstract. A large number of activities have been carried out to characterise the levels of mercury (Hg) species in ambient air and precipitation, in order to understand how they vary over time and how they depend on meteorological conditions. Following the discovery of atmospheric Hg depletion events (AMDEs) in Polar Regions, a significant research effort was made to assess the chemical-physical mechanisms behind the rapid conversion of atmospheric gaseous Hg (Hg0) into reactive and water-soluble forms which are potentially bioavailable. The understanding of the way in which Hg is released into the atmosphere, transformed, deposited and eventually incorporated into biota is of crucial importance not only for the polar regions but also for the marine environment in general. The oceans and seas are both sources and sinks of Hg and play a major role in the Hg cycle. In this work, the available Hg concentration datasets from a number of terrestrial sites (industrial, rural and remote) in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres as well as over oceans and seas have been investigated. The higher Hg species concentration and variability observed in the Northern Hemisphere suggest that the majority of emissions and re-emissions occur there. The inter-hemispherical gradient with higher total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations in the Northern Hemisphere has remained nearly constant over the years for which data are available. The analysis of Hg concentration patterns indicates the differences in regional source/sink characteristics, with increasing variability toward areas strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources. The large increase in Hg emissions in rapidly developing countries (i.e., China, India) over the last decade, due primarily to a sharp increase in energy production from coal combustion, are not currently reflected in the long-term measurements of TGM in ambient air and precipitation at continuous monitoring sites in either Northern Europe or North America. The discrepancy between observed gaseous Hg concentrations (steady or decreasing) and global Hg emission inventories (increasing) has not yet been explained, though the potential oxidation of the atmosphere during the last decade is increasing. Currently, however, a coordinated observational network for Hg does not exist.
